Machine learning models (MLMs) were developed to predict saturated hydraulic conductivity of compacted soil barriers and help to identify appropriate soils for the construction of landfill liners and covers. Data from hydraulic conductivity tests on compacted soil barriers were collected from the literature and compiled into a database for MLM construction. The database contains 329 records of hydraulic conductivity tests associated with 12 selected impact factors covering physical properties, compaction efforts, and hydration and mineralogy behaviors of compacted soil barriers.

Comparative assessment of freeform polynomials as optical surface descriptions.

Opt Express

September 2012

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Univ. of Central Florida, 4000 Central Florida Blvd., Orlando, Florida 32816, USA.

Slow-servo single-point diamond turning as well as advances in computer controlled small lap polishing enables the fabrication of freeform optics, or more specifically, optical surfaces for imaging applications that are not rotationally symmetric. Various forms of polynomials for describing freeform optical surfaces exist in optical design and to support fabrication. A popular method is to add orthogonal polynomials onto a conic section.

Supermodes for optical transmission.

Opt Express

August 2011

CREOL: The College of Optics and Photonics, Univ. of Central Florida, Orlando, FL 32826, USA.

In this paper, the concept of supermode is introduced for long-distance optical transmission systems. The supermodes exploit coupling between the cores of a multi-core fiber, in which the core-to-core distance is much shorter than that in conventional multi-core fiber. The use of supermodes leads to a larger mode effective area and higher mode density than the conventional multi-core fiber.

Factors released from embryonic stem cells inhibit apoptosis in H9c2 cells through PI3K/Akt but not ERK pathway.

We recently reported that embryonic stem cells-conditioned medium (ES-CM) contains antiapoptotic factors that inhibit apoptosis in the cardiac myoblast H9c2 cells. However, the mechanisms of inhibited apoptosis remain elusive. In this report, we provide evidence for the novel mechanisms involved in the inhibition of apoptosis provided by ES-CM.

Design and implementation of a random neural network routing engine.

IEEE Trans Neural Netw

October 2012

Sch. of Electr. Eng. and Comput. Sci., Univ. of Central Florida, Orlando, FL, USA.

Random neural network (RNN) is an analytically tractable spiked neural network model that has been implemented in software for a wide range of applications for over a decade. This paper presents the hardware implementation of the RNN model. Recently, cognitive packet networks (CPN) is proposed as an alternative packet network architecture where there is no routing table, instead the RNN based reinforcement learning is used to route packets.

First-order sensitivity analysis of quartz crystal resonator model parameters.

IEEE Trans Ultrason Ferroelectr Freq Control

October 2012

Dept. of Electr. Eng., Univ. of Central Florida, Orlando, FL.

A first-order measurement sensitivity analysis of a single mode, quartz resonator device model was conducted. This analysis predicts the variations in the motional arm resistance versus the resonance S-parameter as a function of measurement errors. The accuracy of this first-order sensitivity analysis is verified by computer simulation and experimentally.
