Profiling severe asthma: Any relevance for age? An analysis from Severe Asthma Network Italy (SANI) cohort.

Background: Aging implies changes in terms of lung function, immune system, and respiratory and extra-respiratory comorbidities. Few studies have specifically addressed the relevance of age on severe asthma burden and control. We aimed to evaluate whether age acts as an independent determinant of asthma severity, in terms of clinical, functional, and inflammatory profile, and to explore potential cofactors that contribute to a more difficult disease control in different age groups.

A genome-wide association meta-analysis of all-cause and vascular dementia.

Introduction: Dementia is a multifactorial disease with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) pathologies making the largest contributions. Yet, most genome-wide association studies (GWAS) focus on AD.

Regional differences in mortality risk and in attenuating or aggravating factors in schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

People with schizophrenia die prematurely, yet regional differences are unclear. PRISMA 2020-compliant systematic review/random-effects meta-analysis of cohort studies assessing mortality relative risk (RR) versus any control group, and moderators, in people with ICD/DSM-defined schizophrenia, comparing countries and continents. We conducted subgroup, meta-regression analyses, and quality assessment.

The development of effective drug delivery systems is one of the major challenges in the fight against cancer. This study involves a nanomedicine pathway to encapsulate the cofactor flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) using polymeric gold nanoparticles (PEG-AuNPs) through two chemical methods of functionalization (chelation (IN); carbodiimide chemistry (ON)).

Obesity II: Establishing causal links between chemical exposures and obesity.

Obesity is a multifactorial disease with both genetic and environmental components. The prevailing view is that obesity results from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure caused by overeating and insufficient exercise. We describe another environmental element that can alter the balance between energy intake and energy expenditure: obesogens.

Greenspace exposure and children behavior: A systematic review.

We systematically reviewed the existing evidence (until end of November 2021) on the association between long-term exposure to greenspace and behavioral problems in children according to the PRISMA 2020. The review finally reached 29 relevant studies of which, 17 were cross-sectional, 11 were cohort, and one was a case-control. Most of the studies were conducted in Europe (n = 14), followed by the USA (n = 8), and mainly (n = 21) from 2015 onwards.

Real world comparison of teriflunomide and dimethyl fumarate in naïve relapsing multiple sclerosis patients: Evidence from the Italian MS register.

Background: Teriflunomide (TERI) and dimethyl fumarate (DMF) are licensed as first-line disease-modifying treatments (DMTs) for relapsing remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) and are largely replacing injectable DMTs.

Methods: All RRMS patients starting TERI or DMF between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2017, were included in the analysis. Time to first relapse, time to confirmed disability progression (CDP), and time to DMT discontinuation have been investigated.

Introduction and adaptation of an emerging pathogen to olive trees in Italy.

The invasive plant pathogen currently threatens European flora through the loss of economically and culturally important host plants. This emerging vector-borne bacterium, native to the Americas, causes several important diseases in a wide range of plants including crops, ornamentals, and trees. Previously absent from Europe, and considered a quarantine pathogen, was first detected in Apulia, Italy in 2013 associated with a devastating disease of olive trees (Olive Quick Decline Syndrome, OQDS).

Being creative during lockdown: The relationship between creative potential and COVID-19-related psychological distress in narcolepsy type 1.

The national lockdown imposed in several countries to counteract the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to an unprecedented situation with serious effects on mental health of the general population and of subjects affected by heterogeneous diseases. Considering the positive association between narcoleptic symptoms and creativity, we aimed at exploring the psychological distress associated with COVID-19 restrictions and its relationship with depressive symptoms and creativity in patients with narcolepsy type 1 (NT1). A total of 52 patients with NT1 and 50 healthy controls, who completed a previous study on creativity, were contacted during the first lockdown period to complete an online survey evaluating psychological distress related to the COVID-19 outbreak, sleep quality, narcolepsy and depressive symptoms, and creative abilities.

Mechanisms of altered bone remodeling in children with type 1 diabetes.

Bone loss associated with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) begins at the onset of the disease, already in childhood, determining a lower bone mass peak and hence a greater risk of osteoporosis and fractures later in life.
