Facile Synthesis of Heterogeneous Indium Nanoparticles for Formate Production via CO Electroreduction.

In this study, a simple and scalable method to obtain heterogeneous indium nanoparticles and carbon-supported indium nanoparticles under mild conditions is described. Physicochemical characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed heterogeneous morphologies for the In nanoparticles in all cases. Apart from In, XPS revealed the presence of oxidized In species on the carbon-supported samples, whereas these species were not observed for the unsupported samples.

Liquid State Machines (LSMs) are computing reservoirs composed of recurrently connected Spiking Neural Networks which have attracted research interest for their modeling capacity of biological structures and as promising pattern recognition tools suitable for their implementation in neuromorphic processors, benefited from the modest use of computing resources in their training process. However, it has been difficult to optimize LSMs for solving complex tasks such as event-based computer vision and few implementations in large-scale neuromorphic processors have been attempted. In this work, we show that offline-trained LSMs implemented in the SpiNNaker neuromorphic processor are able to classify visual events, achieving state-of-the-art performance in the event-based N-MNIST dataset.

Wild subspecies of constitute a source of genetic variability with huge potential for olive breeding to face global changes in Mediterranean-climate regions. We intend to identify wild olive genotypes with optimal adaptability to different environmental conditions to serve as a source of rootstocks and resistance genes for olive breeding. Anthocyanins in wine principally depend on grape skin extractable anthocyanin content, that is, the amount of anthocyanins present in grape skin that are released to wine during the maceration stage. This amount of extractable anthocyanins is closely linked to the cell wall degradation of skin cells. Indeed, among other methodologies, the maceration in presence of different enzymes can be used to increase cell wall degradation, and therefore, the amount of anthocyanins extracted from grape skins to wine.

Tribological coatings made of MoS and WSe phases and their corresponding combinations with tungsten carbide (WC) were prepared by non-reactive magnetron sputtering of individual targets of similar composition. A comparative tribological analysis of these multiphase coatings was done in both ambient air (30-40% relative humidity, RH) and dry nitrogen (RH<7%) environments using the same tribometer and testing conditions. A nanostructural study using advanced transmission electron microscopy of the initial coatings and examination of the counterfaces after the friction test using different analytical tools helped to elucidate what governs the tribological behavior for each type of environment.

Lifestyle factors are responsible for a considerable portion of cancer incidence worldwide, but credible estimates from the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) suggest that the fraction of cancers attributable to toxic environmental exposures is between 7% and 19%. To explore the hypothesis that low-dose exposures to mixtures of chemicals in the environment may be combining to contribute to environmental carcinogenesis, we reviewed 11 hallmark phenotypes of cancer, multiple priority target sites for disruption in each area and prototypical chemical disruptors for all targets, this included dose-response characterizations, evidence of low-dose effects and cross-hallmark effects for all targets and chemicals. In total, 85 examples of chemicals were reviewed for actions on key pathways/mechanisms related to carcinogenesis.

The reaction of [1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]pyridinium tetrafluoroborates with [RhCl(COD)](2) and [PdCl(allyl)](2) takes place under mild basic conditions (Et(3)N, THF, room temperature) to afford the corresponding [RhCl(COD)(Tripy)] and [PdCl(allyl)(Tripy)] complexes, respectively (Tripy = [1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]pyridin-3-ylidene), and their structures were analysed by X-ray diffractometry and spectroscopic techniques. The sigma-donor ability of the new ligands was estimated by comparative analysis of infrared nu(CO) stretching frequencies of [RhCl(CO)(2)(Tripy)] complexes, and proved to be strongly dependent on the substitution pattern. Additionally, a first insight into the catalytic properties of the latter in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling demonstrates a good catalytic activity that enables the coupling of aryl chlorides at room temperature.

Phosphogypsum (PG) is a residue of the phosphate fertilizer industry that has relatively high concentrations of 226Ra and other radionuclides. Thus, it is interesting to study the effect of PG applied as a Ca amendment on the levels and behavior of radionuclides in agricultural soils. A study involving treatments with 13 and 26 Mg ha(-1) of PG and 30 Mg ha(-1) of manure was performed, measuring 226Ra and U isotopes in drainage water, soil, and plant samples.
