Hydrazones are important structural motifs in organic synthesis, providing a useful molecular platform for the construction of valuable compounds. Electrooxidative transformations of hydrazones constitute an attractive opportunity to take advantage of the versatility of these reagents. By directly harnessing the electrical current to perform the oxidative process, a large panel of organic molecules can be accessed from readily available hydrazones under mild, safe and oxidant-free reaction conditions.

Background: Brain injury is one of the most serious complications after cardiac arrest (CA). To prevent this phenomenon, rapid cooling with total liquid ventilation (TLV) has been proposed in small animal models of CA (rabbits and piglets). Here, we aimed to determine whether hypothermic TLV can also offer neuroprotection and mitigate cerebral inflammatory response in large animals.

Powerful wildfires occurring in Siberia each summer emit large amounts of smoke aerosol that, according to studies of the environmental impacts of biomass burning (BB) aerosol in different regions of the world, can affect precipitation and other weather parameters and induce feedback on fires. However, the knowledge of smoke-weather interactions and fire-weather feedback in Siberia is presently limited. To advance this knowledge, we performed coupled-meteorology-chemistry simulations of aerosols and weather in a Siberian region covering taiga and tundra using the CHIMERE chemistry-transport model and the WRF meteorological model.

ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters constitute a 49-member superfamily in humans. These proteins, most of them being transmembrane, allow the active transport of an important variety of substrates across biological membranes, using ATP hydrolysis as an energy source. For an important proportion of these ABC transporters, genetic variations of the loci encoding them have been correlated with rare genetic diseases, including cystic fibrosis and interstitial lung disease (variations in CFTR/ABCC7 and ABCA3) as well as cholestatic liver diseases (variations in ABCB4 and ABCB11).

Polarization transformation is at the foundation of modern applications in photonics and quantum optics. Notwithstanding their applicative interests, basic theoretical and experimental efforts are still needed to exploit the full potential of polarization optics. Here, we reveal that the coherent superposition of two non-orthogonal eigen-states of Jones matrix can improve drastically the efficiency of arbitrary polarization transformation with respect to classical orthogonal polarization optics.

The last decade has seen significant growth in the application of DNA-based methods for extended antigen typing, and the use of gene sequencing to consider variation in blood group genes to guide clinical care. The challenge for the field now lies in educating professionals, expanding accessibility and standardizing the use of genotyping for routine patient care. Here we discuss applications of genotyping when transfusion is not straightforward including when compatibility cannot be demonstrated by routine methods, when Rh type is unclear, when allo- and auto-antibodies are encountered in stem cell and organ transplantation, for prenatal testing to determine maternal and foetal risk for complications, and Group A subtyping for kidney and platelet donors.

Introduction: We investigated the link between habitual caffeine intake with memory impairments and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients.
Methods: MCI (N = 147) and AD (N = 116) patients of the Biomarker of AmyLoid pepTide and AlZheimer's diseAse Risk (BALTAZAR) cohort reported their caffeine intake at inclusion using a dedicated survey. Associations of caffeine consumption with memory impairments and CSF biomarkers (tau, p-tau181, amyloid beta 1-42 [Aβ], Aβ) were analyzed using logistic and analysis of covariance models.

The primary objective of this study was to investigate the pharmacokinetics of inhaled argon in young pigs using mechanical ventilation. Also a physiologically based model of argon pharmacokinetics (PBPK) is validated with human data for xenon from the literature and the new data from juvenile pigs. The inherent difficulty in performing pharmacokinetics studies of argon makes the use of the PBPK model especially relevant.

Background: Health policymakers have tried to improve the care pathway for cancer patients by improving collaboration between participating healthcare professionals by involving the general practitioner (GP).
Objective(s): To explore how patients, GPs, oncologists and nurses interacted and how they perceived, in their practice, professional roles, collaboration, and cancer care pathways.
Methods: Between January 2018 and December 2021, we conducted a qualitative study that combined phenomenology and a general inductive analysis, based on semi-structured interviews with cancer patients and their GPs, oncologists, and nurses in France.

Background: Exposure to air pollution can affect the health of individuals with respiratory disease, but may also impede the health and performance of athletes. This is potentially relevant for people travelling to and competing in the Olympic and Paralympic Games (OPG) in Paris. We describe anticipated air quality in Paris based on historical monitoring data and describe the impact of the process on the development of monitoring strategies for future international sporting events.

Hot Jupiters are among the best-studied exoplanets, but it is still poorly understood how their chemical composition and cloud properties vary with longitude. Theoretical models predict that clouds may condense on the nightside and that molecular abundances can be driven out of equilibrium by zonal winds. Here we report a phase-resolved emission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-43b measured from 5 μm to 12 μm with the JWST's Mid-Infrared Instrument.

Immune dysregulation is an important aspect of schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorders (BD) pathophysiology, including not only inflammatory but also autoimmune process reflective of abnormal humoral immune responses. Given that B cell-activating factor (BAFF) is an integral aspect of B lymphocyte regulation, the current study investigated BAFF in SZ and BD. 255 SZ patients, 407 BD patients and 185 healthy controls (HC) were investigated across three aspects of soluble BAFF (sBAFF) by (i) comparing sBAFF circulatory levels across SZ, BD and HC, (ii) determining potential correlations between the circulating levels of sBAFF and the genotype distribution of a functionally relevant polymorphism, namely the TNFSF13B 3'UTR insertion-deletion polymorphism (GCTGT>A), (iii) analyzing relationships between both sBAFF levels and 3'UTR insertion-deletion genotypes and disease risk, patients clinical characteristics and circulating levels of potent inflammatory molecules.

Despite advances in weaning protocols, extubation failure (EF) is associated with poor outcomes. Many predictors of EF have been proposed, including hypercapnia at the end of the spontaneous breathing test (SBT). However, performing arterial blood gases at the end of SBT is not routinely recommended, whereas end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) can be routinely monitored during SBT.
