The dielectric function of a cerium oxide nanopowder has been investigated by infrared spectroscopy. The use of Bergman's spectral representation and a semi-quantum dielectric function model allows an accurate retrieval of the main features of the lattice dynamics of this nanocompound. Due to the absence of significant lattice strain or vacancy concentration, the observed differences between the dielectric functions of the nanopowder and a single crystal can be explained mainly by the phenomenon of phonon confinement.

Amendments, such as biochar, compost, and iron grit, used in phytostabilization studies, showed positive effects on soil physico-chemical properties, plant growth, and the microbial community. However, assisted phytostabilization studies do not always focus on the rhizosphere area where soil, plants, and microorganisms are affected by the amendments and plants and microorganisms can also interact with each other. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of amendment application on the exudation of organic acids by Salix viminalis plant roots, as well as the effects of amendments and plant development on the soil CHNS contents and the microbial community activity and diversity, assessed by measuring enzyme activities and using Biolog EcoPlates tests and next-generation sequencing analyses.

Pharmaceutical products (PPs) are consumed worldwide and are continuously released into hydrological environments, but are not efficiently removed by sewage treatment plants. Their occurrence within the dissolved phase has been extensively studied, but only a few articles concern solid matrices. The mechanisms and extent of sorption depend on the properties of both the molecules (degradability, charge, hydrophobicity) and the matrices (clay content, organic matter content), making the spatio-temporal distribution of PPs in natural environments complex and poorly elucidated.

A convenient and efficient synthetic route to C3-arylated 7-trifluoromethylpyrazolo[1,5-]pyrimidin-5-one derivatives has been reported starting from 3-bromo-7-(trifluoromethyl)pyrazolo[1,5-]pyrimidin-5-one through a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. The arylation (heteroarylation) strategy can be performed using a wide variety of aryl and heteroaryl boronic acids and requiring a tandem catalyst XPhosPdG2/XPhos to avoid the debromination reaction. These optimized conditions were successfully extended to the synthesis of 7-, 8- and 9-arylated pyrimido[1,2-]indazol-2-ones from their corresponding brominated starting materials.

Dictyoglomus thermophilum β-d-xylosidase DtXyl is attractive as a potential thermostable biocatalyst able to produce biologically active ginsenosides intermediates from β-(1,2)-D-xylosylated compounds, including Notoginsenoside-R1. DtXyl was expressed as an active N-terminal His-tagged protein, and its crystal structure was solved in presence or absence of d-xylose product. Modelling of notoginsenoside R1 in DtXyl active site led to the identification of several hydrophobic residues interacting in close contact to the substrate hydrophobic core.

Enthesopathy-An Underappreciated Role in Osteoarthritis?

Curr Sports Med Rep

November 2020

University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL.

Osteoarthritis (OA) continues to be a debilitating disease worldwide, to date, no therapies have been definitely proven to modify disease progression or moderate symptom relief long term other than joint replacement. A contributing factor may be the lack of attention to the potential role of the periarticular enthesis and development and progression of OA. The enthesis is the site of attachment for a tendon, ligament, or joint capsule to the bony skeleton, thereby allowing centralized transmission and dissipation of mechanical loads.
