Lipophilic derivatives of vitamin C, known as ascorbyl-6-O-alkanoates (ASCn), have been mainly developed for use in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and the food industry as antioxidant additives. These derivatives are of biotechnological interest due to their antioxidant properties, amphiphilic behavior, capacity to self-organize into nano- and micro-structures, anionic nature, and low cost of synthesis. In this review, we will focus on the commercial amphiphile, 6-O-palmitoyl L-ascorbic acid (ASC16), and the shorter acyl chains derivatives, such as 6-O-myristoyl (ASC14) and 6-O-lauroyl L-ascorbic acid (ASC12).

Introduction: The World Health Organization recommends prioritizing safe and effective drugs proven by clinical or epidemiological studies. However, in population groups with little research, a drug can be used for an indication or pharmaceutical form different from that approved by the regulatory agency (off-label), extrapolating data from studies in adults and exposing pediatric patients. to develop an Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) due to safety considerations that have not been systematically studied.

Chronobiology investigations have revealed much about cellular and physiological clockworks but we are far from having a complete mechanistic understanding of the physiological and ecological implications. Here we present some unresolved questions in circadian biology research as posed by the editorial staff and guest contributors to the Journal of Circadian Rhythms. This collection of ideas is not meant to be comprehensive but does reveal the breadth of our observations on emerging trends in chronobiology and circadian biology.

Departamento de Bioquímica Clínica-Facultad de Ciencias Químicas-Centro de Investigaciones en Bioquímica Clínica e Inmunología (CIBICI-CONICET), Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Córdoba, Argentina. Electronic address:

Chitin and its derivative chitosan (Q) are abundant structural elements in nature. Q has modulatory and anti-inflammatory effects and also regulates the expression of adhesion molecules. The interaction between cells expressing the αEβ7 integrin and E-cadherin facilitates tolerogenic signal transmission and localization of lymphocytes at the frontline for interaction with luminal antigens.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the relationship between socio-demographic factors and obesity prevalence in adults from San Luis City, Argentina, finding that 17.3% of participants were classified as obese.
  • It highlights that lower education levels significantly correlate with higher rates of obesity and its associated metabolic conditions, particularly affecting those with medium to low education status.
  • Additionally, factors such as increased age, female sex, and higher body mass index (BMI) were identified as contributing to a greater likelihood of developing metabolic comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension.

Introduction: Motor compromise characterizes cerebral palsy (CP), and is often associated with intellectual disability (ID). Standardized classification systems have been developed to describe the functions of people with CP. The aim was to functionally characterize children and adolescents aged 0 to 18 years with CP in Argentina and to investigate the association between motor compromise (GMFCS), ID and functional classifications.

Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas Físicas y Naturales, Córdoba, Argentina.

Modern morphometric-based approaches provide valuable metrics to quantify and understand macroevolutionary and macroecological patterns and processes. Here we describe TriloMorph, an openly accessible database for morpho-geometric information of trilobites, together with a landmark acquisition protocol. In addition to morphological traits, the database contains contextual data on chronostratigraphic age, geographic location, taxonomic information and lithology of landmarked specimens.

Introduction: The impact of cerebral palsy (CP) on quality of life requires the incorporation of subjective assessments of health, functional status, and well-being. A specific health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measure for CP is the Australian CP-QOL questionnaire, whose version for caregivers (PCQ) was adapted in Argentina. This study aimed to achieve the final structure and evaluate the reliability and validity of the CP-QOL-PCQ for the Argentine child and adolescent population.

When we recognize the importance of disseminating scientific knowledge, we recognize not only the potential it can have in the hands of the scientific community, but also in the hands of society as a whole. From this premise, we first reflect, hoping that such reflection will lead us to commit ourselves to make dissemination actions accessible and non-discriminatory. "Equal access to science is not only a social and ethical requirement for human development, but also a necessity to fully exploit the potential of scientific communities around the world and to guide scientific progress in a way that meets the needs of humanity".

Microplastics distribution in river side bars: The combined effects of water level and wind intensity.

November 2023

Instituto de Investigaciones en Fisicoquímica de Córdoba (INFIQC), Departamento de Fisicoquímica, Facultad de Ciencias Químicas, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Ciudad Universitaria X5000HUA, Córdoba, Argentina. Electronic address:

Rivers are the main pathway for microplastics (MP) transport toward the ocean. However, the understanding of the processes involved in the deposition and mobilization of MP in rivers, specifically in sediment side bars (SB), remains very limited. The objectives of this study were: (i) to examine the effect of hydrometric fluctuations and wind intensity on the distribution of microplastics (MP < 5 mm) in the SB of large river (the Paraná River), (ii) to determine the characteristics of MP to infer their origin and fate, and (iii) to discuss potential similarities or differences between MP suspended in the water column and MP found in sediment.

Cryogenic IR and UV spectroscopy of isomer-selected cytosine radical cation.

Oxidation of the nucleobases is of great concern for the stability of DNA strands and is considered as a source of mutagenesis and cancer. However, precise spectroscopy data, in particular in their electronic excited states are scarce if not missing. We here report an original way to produce isomer-selected radical cations of DNA bases, exemplified in the case of cytosine, through the photodissociation of cold cytosine-silver (C-Ag) complex.
