Background: Allogeneic stem cell transplantation is a potentially curative therapy for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) after achieving complete remission (CR). The aim of this study is to evaluate the optimal dose of thiotepa, administered as part of the thiotepa-busulfan-fludarabine (TBF) conditioning regimen for allogeneic stem cell transplantation in adults with AML in CR.
Patients And Methods: In a retrospective multicenter analysis, we identified 240 patients allotransplanted from matched related or unrelated donors or T replete haplo-identical donors.

Preliminary data suggest that allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) may be effective in T-prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL). The purpose of the present observational study was to assess the outcome of allo-SCT in patients aged 65 years or younger with a centrally confirmed diagnosis of T-PLL. Patients were consecutively registered with the EBMT at the time of transplantation and followed by routine EBMT monitoring but with an extended dataset.

Data on Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) are difficult to collect by cancer registries because of the lack of reporting and the use of different classifications of the disease. In the Lazio Region, data from patients with a confirmed diagnosis of MDS, treated by a hematology center, have been collected since 2002 by the Gruppo Romano-Laziale Mielodisplasie (GROM-L) registry, the second MDS registry existing in Italy. This study aimed at evaluating MDS medical miscoding during hospitalizations, and patients' survival.

In this work, we address the question of whether the enhanced stability of thermophilic proteins has a direct connection with internal hydration. Our model systems are two homologous G domains of different stability: the mesophilic G domain of the elongation factor thermal unstable protein from E. coli and the hyperthermophilic G domain of the EF-1α protein from S.

Electric power-systems are one of the most important critical infrastructures. In recent years, they have been exposed to extreme stress due to the increasing demand, the introduction of distributed renewable energy sources, and the development of extensive interconnections. We investigate the phenomenon of abrupt breakdown of an electric power-system under two scenarios: load growth (mimicking the ever-increasing customer demand) and power fluctuations (mimicking the effects of renewable sources).

I review the current status of phenomenological programs inspired by quantum-spacetime research. I stress in particular the significance of results establishing that certain data analyses provide sensitivity to effects introduced genuinely at the Planck scale. My main focus is on phenomenological programs that affect the directions taken by studies of quantum-spacetime theories.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) applications were initially designed to provide final users with special capabilities, like writing letters on a screen, to communicate with others without muscular effort. In these last few years, the BCI scientific community has been interested in bringing BCI applications outside the scientific laboratories, initially to provide useful applications in everyday life and in future in more complex environments, such as space. Recently, we implemented a control of a domestic environment realized with BCI applications.

This work extends the Bussgang blind equalization algorithm to the multichannel case with application to image deconvolution problems. We address the restoration of images with poor spatial correlation as well as strongly correlated (natural) images. The spatial nonlinearity employed in the final estimation step of the Bussgang algorithm is developed according to the minimum mean square error criterion in the case of spatially uncorrelated images.

The problem of the definition and evaluation of brain connectivity has become a central one in neuroscience during the latest years, as a way to understand the organization and interaction of cortical areas during the execution of cognitive or motor tasks. Among various methods established during the years, the Directed Transfer Function (DTF), the Partial Directed Coherence (PDC) and the direct DTF (dDTF) are frequency-domain approaches to this problem, all based on a multivariate autoregressive modeling of time series and on the concept of Granger causality. In this paper we propose the use of these methods on cortical signals estimated from high resolution EEG recordings, a non invasive method which exhibits a higher spatial resolution than conventional cerebral electromagnetic measures.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEI) such as donepezil act in mild Alzheimer's disease (AD) by increasing cholinergic tone. Differences in the clinical response in patients who do or do not benefit from therapy may be due to different functional features of the central neural systems. We tested this hypothesis using cortical electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythmicity.

Background And Objectives: Endoscopic procedures are the gold standard for the diagnosis of esophageal varices but these invasive methods are complex to perform in hemophilic patients co-infected with hepatitis C virus/human immunodeficiency virus (HCV/HIV). Real-time ultrasonography has been reported to be an effective, non-invasive procedure able to monitor patients with chronic liver disease and to give useful information for the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension and the presence of esophageal varices.
Design And Methods: Seventy patients with severe hemophilia were evaluated by esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (EGDS) and ultrasonography; 40 had HCV/HIV co-infection and 30, comparable for age and HCV exposure time, were HCV+/HIV-.

The aim of this work was to study the degree of neuronal synchronization occurring within the portion of the somatosensory cortex devoted to hand control during an external sensory stimulation. In this way, we focused on the properties of the sensory cortical representation, rather than the more investigated motor one. To this aim, we collected magnetoencephalograhic data from healthy subjects during separate stimulation of their thumbs and little fingers and analyzed these data by means of a time-dependent 'synchronization index'.

The study takes into consideration the loss of a preborn child and the consequent grief of parents. The Italian nursing literature is quite poor on the subject while international literature show a variability of some phenomena particularly in the first three-five years from the loss. The present research, by a quantitative design and the Hogan bereavement conceptual framework, has considered parents since three years loss.

Availability of electronic healthcare records (EHCR) and geographical networks allows nowadays to realise a set of functionalities to support continuity of care. Actual exchange of complete clinical information, common centralised records, common decisions within an agreed protocols are not mandatory. Sub-optimal alternatives, involving easier management, are possible.

The telematic evolution of the Day-Hospital can be considered as the virtual hospitalization, implementing the integration between hospital care and home care and predefining an hospital system which "goes to the patient home". In this paper the authors describe tools, characteristics, and advantages of this proposal, as well as the interaction model. Then the medical problem is illustrated: the first model implemented in oncology involves the liver tumors, which are the more frequent malignant neoplasms, and, in particular, the hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC),.
