The decision to proceed to transplant for adult patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is not clear-cut. Relapse and nonrelapse mortality continue to plague the outcome of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) even when undertaken in complete remission (CR). Those considered to be at high risk for relapse often are considered for HSCT in first complete remission (CR1) while those at lower risk may not be referred until they have relapsed, when their chances for cure are very poor.

Recently, we showed that compared with the A/J inbred mouse strain, C57BL/6J (B6) mice have an athlete's cardiac phenotype. We postulated that strain differences would result in greater left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy in response to isoproterenol in B6 than A/J mice and tested the hypothesis that a differential response could be explained partly by differences in beta-adrenergic receptor (beta-AR) density and/or coupling. A/J and B6 mice were randomized to receive daily isoproterenol (100 mg/kg sc) or isovolumic vehicle for 5 days.

Neuregulin-1 (NRG-1), binding to the human epidermal growth factor receptor HER2/HER3, plays a role in pulmonary epithelial cell proliferation and recovery from injury in vitro. We hypothesized that activation of HER2/HER3 by NRG-1 would also play a role in recovery from in vivo lung injury. We tested this hypothesis using bleomycin lung injury of transgenic mice incapable of signaling through HER2/HER3 due to lung-specific dominant-negative HER3 (DNHER3) expression.

Validation of echocardiographic methods for assessing left ventricular dysfunction in rats with myocardial infarction.

The rat infarct model is widely used in heart failure research, but few echocardiographic indexes of left ventricular (LV) function are validated in this model. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to validate a 13-segment LV wall motion score index (WMSI) and the myocardial performance index (MPI) in infarcted rats. Twenty-nine male Wistar rats underwent left coronary artery ligation or sham operation and were evaluated with two-dimensional and Doppler flow echocardiography 8 wk later.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a condition characterized by chronic inflammation targeted at the epithelial layer. In addition to being involved in immune phenomena, UC epithelial cells exhibit decreased oxidation of butyrate, downregulation of oxidative pathway regulatory genes, and overexpression of mitochondrial (mt) genes. Purpose: To test the hypotheses that (a) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging-guided radio-frequency (RF) thermal ablation of the vertebrae is feasible in porcine models, (b) procedure safety depends on the location of ablation within the vertebra, and (c) MR imaging allows accurate monitoring of induced thermal lesion size and shape.

Materials And Methods: Ten percutaneous MR imaging-guided RF thermal ablations were randomized over various lumbar vertebral levels and locations in seven pigs. Animals were followed up for 2, 7, or 14 days before sacrifice.

The mathematical models used to analyze positron emission tomography (PET) data obtained for receptor quantitation have many unknown parameters which must be estimated from the data. Obtaining unique and precise estimates of the model parameters from PET data is difficult as a result of the complex interdependence of the parameters. Here the authors address the task of estimating the concentration of myocardial beta-adrenergic receptors using unlabeled and (18)F-labeled S(-)-fluorocarazolol as the receptor ligand.
