The fungal Bromodomain and Extra-Terminal (BET) protein Bdf1 is a potential antifungal target against invasive fungal infections. However, the need to selectively inhibit both Bdf1 bromodomains (BDs) over human orthologs and the lack of molecular tools to assess on-target antifungal efficacy hamper efforts to develop Bdf1 BD inhibitors as antifungal therapeutics. This study reports a phenyltriazine compound that inhibits both Bdf1 BDs from the human fungal pathogen Candida glabrata with selectivity over the orthologous BDs from the human BET protein Brd4.

Transmission electron microscopy, especially at cryogenic temperature, is largely used for studying biological macromolecular complexes. A main difficulty of TEM imaging of biological samples is the weak amplitude contrasts due to electron diffusion on light elements that compose biological organisms. Achieving high-resolution reconstructions implies therefore the acquisition of a huge number of TEM micrographs followed by a time-consuming image analysis.

Unlabelled: Among the 32 items of the Motor Function Measure scale, 3 concern the assessment of hand function on a paper-based support. Their characteristics make it possible to envisage the use of a tablet instead of the original paper-based support for their completion. This would then make it possible to automate the score to reduce intra- and inter-individual variability.

Sensors play an important role in both the continuous monitoring and intermittent analyses, which are essential for the study of wastewater treatment plant management and conducting related research. Given the significant environmental impact of the issues involved, accurate measurement of the volume of water flowing into and out of treatment plants is a key parameter for plant management, ecotoxicological studies and academic research programs. Traditionally, flow measurements have been based on calibrated weirs or venturi flumes, using water level measurements for conversion into flow, according to established relationships.

Betaine lipids: Biosynthesis, functional diversity and evolutionary perspectives.

Prog Lipid Res

January 2025

Laboratoire Physiologie Cellulaire et Végétale, Univ. Grenoble Alpes, CNRS, CEA, INRAE, IRIG, Grenoble, France. Electronic address:

Betaine lipids (BL) are relatively understudied non‑phosphorus glycerolipids. They are predominantly found in algae but have also been detected in other unicellular eukaryotes, fungi, bacteria, and some bryophytes and pteridophytes. These extraplastidial lipids are considered as substitute for phospholipids in organisms, particularly under phosphate (Pi) deficiency.

Background: mRNA-based cancer vaccines show promise in triggering antitumour immune responses. To combine them with existing immunotherapies, the intratumoral immune microenvironment needs to be deeply characterised. Here, we test nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs), the so-called Lipidots®, for delivering unmodified mRNA encoding Ovalbumin (OVA) antigen to elicit specific antitumour responses.

Article Synopsis
  • Bacterial infectious diseases pose a significant public health challenge, especially with rising antibiotic resistance, making fast detection of pathogens essential for control measures.
  • Current methods rely on culture techniques, which are time-consuming and require special equipment, leading to a need for alternative detection methods that can quickly identify whole bacteria without culture.
  • Aptamer-based assays are emerging as a promising alternative, offering benefits such as stability, specificity, and cost-effectiveness, with various detection techniques like optical and electrochemical methods enhancing their utility in diagnosing bacterial infections.

Univ. Grenoble Alpes, CNRS, UMR 5525, CHU Grenoble Alpes, VetAgroSup, Grenoble INP, TIMC, 38000, Grenoble, France. Electronic address:

Invasive candidiasis, including intra-abdominal candidiasis (IAC), is a common complication after liver transplantation. Antifungal drugs such as echinocandins and fluconazole (FCZ) are frequently used to prevent or treat such fungal infections. The diffusion of these antifungals within abdominal body sites has been rarely reported, in particular, in liver transplant recipients.

A challenge in neuroimaging is acquiring frame sequences at high temporal resolution from the largest possible number of pixels. Measuring 1%-10% fluorescence changes normally requires 12-bit or higher bit depth, constraining the frame size allowing imaging in the kHz range. We resolved Ca or membrane potential signals from cell populations or single neurons in brain slices by acquiring fluorescence at 8-bit depth and by binning pixels offline, achieving unprecedented frame sizes at kHz rates.

Lipid droplets (LDs) are the major sites of lipid and energy homeostasis. However, few LD biogenesis proteins have been identified. Using model microalga , we show that ABHD1, an α/β-hydrolase domain-containing protein, is localized to the LD surface and stimulates LD formation through two actions: one enzymatic and one structural.

Intertwined people-nature relations are central to nature-based adaptation to climate change.

Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci

January 2025

Faculty of Geosciences and the Environment, Institute of Geography and Sustainability, University of Lausanne, Lausanne 1015, Switzerland.

Adaptation to climate change is a social-ecological process: it is not solely a result of natural processes or human decisions but emerges from multiple relations within social systems, within ecological systems and between them. We propose a novel analytical framework to evaluate social-ecological relations in nature-based adaptation, encompassing social (people-people), ecological (nature-nature) and social-ecological (people-nature) relations. Applying this framework to 25 case studies, we analyse the associations among these relations and identify archetypes of social-ecological adaptation.

It is striking that visual attention, the process by which attentional resources are allocated in the visual field so as to locally enhance visual perception, is a pervasive component of models of eye movements in reading, but is seldom considered in models of isolated word recognition. We describe BRAID, a new Bayesian word-Recognition model with Attention, Interference and Dynamics. As most of its predecessors, BRAID incorporates three sensory, perceptual, and orthographic knowledge layers together with a lexical membership submodel.

Bathymetry critically influences the intrusion of warm Circumpolar Deep Water onto the continental shelf and under ice shelf cavities in Antarctica, thereby forcing ice melting, grounding line retreat, and sea level rise. We present a novel and comprehensive bathymetry of Antarctica that includes all ice shelf cavities and previously unmeasured continental shelf areas. The new bathymetry is based on a 3D inversion of a circumpolar compilation of gravity anomalies constrained by measurements from the International Bathymetric Chart of the Southern Ocean, BedMachine Antarctica, and discrete seafloor measurements from seismic and ocean robotic probes.

The textural properties of synthetic and natural clays in the sodium form and exchanged with tetramethylammonium cations (TMA) were characterized using N and Ar physisorption isotherms at cryogenic temperatures. Specific surface areas and micro/mesoporous volumes were determined using the BET and the models. The analysis requires the use of reference isotherms measured at the same temperature on the surface of non-porous materials with an identical chemical composition.
