Why woody plant modularity through time and space must be integrated in fire research?

AoB Plants

June 2023

Lab of Vegetation Ecology, Instituto de Biociências, Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Avenida 24-A, 1515, Rio Claro 13506-900, Brazil.

Different ecosystems evolved and are maintained by fire, with their vegetation hosting species with a wide diversity of persistence strategies allowing them to insulate their body and resprout new branches after fire disturbance. Changes in fire regime are predicted due to climate change, either by promoting more frequent and/or severe fires or by reducing the number of fire events due to the limitation of fuel load. Predicting the future of fire-driven ecosystems is a complex task as species' survival depends on many factors that vary in space and time.

Camouflaged Nests of Mischocyttarus mirificus (Hymenoptera, Vespidae).

Neotrop Entomol

December 2021

Depto de Zoologia, Instituto de Ciências Biológicas, Programa de Pós Graduação em Comportamento E Biologia Animal, Univ Federal de Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Juiz de Fora, Brazil.

Social wasps present various architectural patterns for their nests, which may differ in shape, size, color, and material used in construction. The distribution pattern of comb cells presented by Mischocyttarus mirificus (Zikán, 1935) is vertical with a single cell of width, resulting in a filiform shape that camouflages in the middle of the substrate. There are few studies regarding this architectural pattern for social wasps and their role in camouflage, and this study aims to detail the nesting habits of this species.

Autozygosity islands and ROH patterns in Nellore lineages: evidence of selection for functionally important traits.

BMC Genomics

September 2018

Departamento de Zootecnia, Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias, UNESP Univ Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho, Jaboticabal, 14884-900, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on examining genome-wide autozygosity in Nellore cattle, analyzing ROH patterns and comparing inbreeding estimates from different methods (ROH, genomic relationship matrix, and pedigree-based coefficients).
  • Results showed that Nellore cattle have moderate to high levels of inbreeding (average 7.15%), with most ROH being short segments, and identified 62 autozygosity islands significantly associated with traits like immune response and growth.
  • The findings suggest that using F (from ROH) is more reliable for measuring ancient inbreeding than traditional pedigree methods, highlighting the impact of selective breeding on important genetic traits in the population.

Professor, Department of Surgery and Integrated Clinic, Araçatuba Dental School, Univ Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP, Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brazil.

Surgical treatment of panfacial fractures usually requires intraoperative temporary occlusion of the teeth and simultaneous access to the nasal pyramid. In such cases, the standard method of airway management is to perform a tracheostomy, but this may be associated with a significant number of perioperative and late complications. This study aimed to determine if submental endotracheal intubation (SEI) is a viable alternative to tracheostomy, especially when short-term postoperative control of the airway is foreseen.
