Background: Cataracts are lens opacifications that are responsible for more than half of blindness cases worldwide, and the only treatment is surgical intervention. Phacoemulsification surgery, the most frequently performed cataract surgery in developed countries, has associated risks, some of which are related to excessive phacoemulsification energy levels and times. The protocol proposed in herein will be used to evaluate the feasibility of a new experimental medical device, the Eye Scan Ultrasound System (ESUS), for the automatic classification of cataract type and severity and quantitative estimation of the optimal phacoemulsification energy.

The main limitation to the success of central nervous system (CNS) therapies lies in the difficulty for drugs to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and reach the brain. Regarding its structure and enzymatic complexity, crossing the BBB is a challenge, although several alternatives have been identified. For instance, the use of drugs encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles has been described as one of the most efficient approaches to bypass the BBB, as they allow the passage of drugs through this barrier, improving brain bioavailability.

This paper uses Value-Based Data Envelopment Analysis (VBDEA), to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the efficiency of 37 state-owned enterprises (SOE) hospitals by employing data publicly available from the Portuguese Health Service database between January and November 2019 and 2020, respectively. Furthermore, a productivity index (specifically adjusted to the VBDEA approach) is also used that allows identifying which factors are behind the relative efficiency changes of these hospitals. The factors considered to perform the efficiency assessment of the Portuguese SOE hospitals include labour, capacity, and activity-related indicators.

The discovery of new drugs has benefited significantly from the development of research in venomics, increasing our understanding of the envenomation processes. It has been previously reported that honeybee venom (HBV) exhibits several pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimutagenic, radioprotective, and anticancer activity and may inclusively act as a complementary treatment for SARS-CoV-2. It composition consists mainly on melittin, phospholipase A2, and apamin but other constituents such as hyaluronidase, mast cell degranulating peptide and secapin are also relevant for its bioactivity.

Long COVID has become a world-wide, non-communicable epidemic, caused by long-lasting multiorgan symptoms that endure for weeks or months after SARS-CoV-2 infection has already subsided. This scientific document aims to provide insight into the possible causes and therapeutic options available for the cardiovascular manifestations of long COVID. The accurate identification of Drug-Target Interactions (DTIs) remains a critical turning point in drug discovery and understanding of the binding process. Despite recent advances in computational solutions to overcome the challenges of in vitro and in vivo experiments, most of the proposed in silico-based methods still focus on binary classification, overlooking the importance of characterizing DTIs with unbiased binding strength values to properly distinguish primary interactions from those with off-targets. Moreover, several of these methods usually simplify the entire interaction mechanism, neglecting the joint contribution of the individual units of each binding component and the interacting substructures involved, and have yet to focus on more explainable and interpretable architectures.

This paper investigates labour market resilience for seven Portuguese NUTS-2 regions over the period 1995-2018 detailing its relationship with levels of education and highlighting the period following the 2007-08 financial and economic crisis. We define resilience as the ability of regional employment to recover from a recessionary shock over an entire business cycle. Our results point to the existence of labour market resilience to the different business cycles for the different regions in terms of total hours worked.

Notwithstanding the advances in the treatment of lung cancer with immune checkpoint inhibitors, the high percentage of non-responders supports the development of novel anticancer treatments. Herein, the expression of the onco-target nucleolin in patient-derived pulmonary carcinomas was characterized, along with the assessment of its potential as a therapeutic target. The clinical prognostic value of nucleolin for human pulmonary carcinomas was evaluated through data mining from the Cancer Genome Atlas project and immunohistochemical detection in human samples.
