Introduction: Drug-mediated inhibition of bile salt efflux transporters may cause liver injury. In vitro prediction of drug effects toward canalicular and/or sinusoidal efflux of bile salts from human hepatocytes is therefore a major issue, which can be addressed using liver cell-based assays.
Area Covered: This review, based on a thorough literature search in the scientific databases PubMed and Web of Science, provides key information about hepatic transporters implicated in bile salt efflux, the human liver cell models available for investigating functional inhibition of bile salt efflux, the different methodologies used for this purpose, and the modes of expression of the results.

Pectin is a complex plant heteropolysaccharide whose structure and function differ depending on its source. In animal feed, breaking down pectin is essential, as its presence increases feed viscosity and reduces nutrient absorption. Soybean meal, a protein-rich poultry feed ingredient, contains significant amounts of pectin, the structure of which remains unclear.

Objective: Adolescents are meant to spend a large part of their time practicing a hobby or sport, but currently there is a decline in their level of physical activity and sport both inside and outside schools, which can lead to a risk of obesity. The objective of the present study was to examine physical activity in obese adolescents within the school establishments of the province of Bejaia (northeastern Algeria).
Method: To determine the physical activity level (PAL) in the school population, a sample of 3,038 students with obesity comprising 1,635 girls and 1,403 boys was selected.

Background: Aarskog-Scott syndrome (AAS) is a rare condition with multiple congenital anomalies, caused by hemizygote variants in the gene. Its description was based mostly on old case reports, in whom a molecular diagnosis was not always available, or on small series. The aim of this study was to better delineate the phenotype and the natural history of AAS and to provide clues for the diagnosis and the management of the patients.

Mitochondrial activity is necessary for the maintenance of many liver functions. In particular, mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation (FAO) is required for energy production and lipid homeostasis. This key metabolic pathway is finely tuned by the mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) activity and different transcription factors such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα).

Humans are exposed to toxic methylmercury mainly by consuming marine fish, in particular top predator species like billfishes or tunas. In seafood risk assessments, mercury is assumed to be mostly present as organic methylmercury in predatory fishes; yet high percentages of inorganic mercury were recently reported in marlins, suggesting markedly different methylmercury metabolism across species. We quantified total mercury and methylmercury concentrations in muscle of four billfish species from the Indian and the Pacific oceans to address this knowledge gap.

Substance use disorders (SUD) in mothers of young children can negatively impact the family unit and promote the intergenerational cycle of mental health disorders. This systematic review aims to: 1) provide an overview of substance use treatments for mothers of young children (from birth to 5 years old); 2) synthesize findings on maternal substance use and child/maternal mental health outcomes; and 3) identify key treatment components. Database searches in Medline, PsycINFO, PubMED, and PsycARTICLES were conducted on May 7th, 2024.

The rise in minimally invasive procedures has created a demand for efficient and reliable planning software to predict intra- and post-operative outcomes. Surrogate modelling has shown promise, but challenges remain, particularly in cardiovascular applications, due to the complexity of parametrising anatomical structures and the need for large training datasets. This study aims to apply statistical shape modelling and machine learning for predicting stent deployment in real time using patient-specific models.

Radioactive cesium released into the atmosphere caused by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011 has contaminated the surrounding area. We confirmed the applicability of in-situ methods to evaluate the depth distribution of Cs by employing the ratio of Compton-scattering and photo-peak components (r) obtained from measured gamma-ray spectra. In the present study, we applied the in-situ method to farmlands in Fukushima Prefecture whose sites were disturbed by decontamination and plowing operations.

Decreased physical activity and high blood pressure are both risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Controlling blood pressure within the normal range can prevent or delay these complications. This systematic review and meta-analysis analyzed the effects of different types of exercise training on the blood pressure and lipid profiles of older adults patients with hypertension.

Objective: Segmentation of individual thigh muscles in MRI images is essential for monitoring neuromuscular diseases and quantifying relevant biomarkers such as fat fraction (FF). Deep learning approaches such as U-Net have demonstrated effectiveness in this field. However, the impact of reducing neural network complexity remains unexplored in the FF quantification in individual muscles.

Purpose Of Review: While lipid-lowering therapies demonstrate efficacy, many patients still contend with significant residual risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD). The intestine plays a pivotal role in regulating circulating lipoproteins levels, thereby exerting influence on ASCVD pathogenesis. This review underscores recent genetic findings from the last six years that delineate new biological pathways and actors in the intestine which regulate lipid-related ASCVD risk.

Inflammation significantly influences cellular communication in the oral environment, impacting tissue repair and regeneration. This study explores the role of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) derived from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAP) in modulating macrophage polarization and osteoblast differentiation. SCAPs were treated with LPS for 24 h, and sEVs from untreated (SCAP-sEVs) and LPS-treated SCAP (LPS-SCAP-sEVs) were isolated via ultracentrifugation and characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Western blot, and Tunable Resistive Pulse Sensing.

Background: The Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test (CKCUEST) is a physical performance test designed to assess the upper extremity (UE) stability. However, only one outcome measure is provided for both UEs, limiting its application if the UEs are not similarly involved. Moreover, the changes in loads sustained by the support UE throughout the movement may influence the support UE stability.

Background: Interpreting biological system changes requires interpreting vast amounts of multi-omics data. While user-friendly tools exist for single-omics analysis, integrating multiple omics still requires bioinformatics expertise, limiting accessibility for the broader scientific community.
Results: BiomiX tackles the bottleneck in high-throughput omics data analysis, enabling efficient and integrated analysis of multiomics data obtained from two cohorts.

The importance of gravity for human motor control is well established, but it remains unclear how the central nervous system accounts for gravitational changes to perform complex motor skills. We tested the hypothesis that microgravity and hypergravity have distinct effects on the neuromuscular control of reaching movements compared to normogravity. To test the influence of gravity levels on sensorimotor planning and control, participants (n = 9) had to reach toward visual targets during parabolic flights.

Objective: Recently, the pig liver model perfused ex vivo using a normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) has been proposed as a suitable model to study xenobiotic metabolism and biliary excretion. The aim of our study is to describe the metabolism of NPS such as cathinones (with a focus on 4-Cl-PVP and eutylone) in blood and bile, using a normothermic perfused pig liver model.
Methods: Livers (n = 4) from male large white pigs, 3-4 months of age and weighing approximately 75-80 kg, were harvested and reperfused onto an NMP (LiverAssist®, XVIVO) using autologous whole blood at 38 °C.

Betaine lipids (BL) are relatively understudied non‑phosphorus glycerolipids. They are predominantly found in algae but have also been detected in other unicellular eukaryotes, fungi, bacteria, and some bryophytes and pteridophytes. These extraplastidial lipids are considered as substitute for phospholipids in organisms, particularly under phosphate (Pi) deficiency.
