Convergent studies have highlighted the amygdala-based and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC)-based circuit or network dysfunction in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, previous studies are often complicated by various traumatic types, psychiatric comorbidities, chronic illness duration, and medication effect on brain function. Besides, little is known whether the functional integration with amygdala-dACC interaction disrupted or not in PTSD.

The membrane enzyme Na+, K+ -ATPase is known to help maintain ion homeostasis in mammalian cells. Newly identified functions of this enzyme suggest that inhibition of Na+, K+ -ATPase by cardiac glycosides may be useful to patients with cancer. Twelve human tumor cell lines were chosen to examine determinants of human tumor cell sensitivity to cardiac glycosides.

The sympathetic nerve activity is elevated in cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension. Enhanced glutamatergic inputs in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus contribute to heightened sympathetic outflow in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). We determined the role of group I metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR) in the PVN in the control of sympathetic vasomotor tone in hypertension.

GABA(B) receptor function is upregulated in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), but it is unclear whether this upregulation occurs pre- or postsynaptically. We therefore determined pre- and postsynaptic GABA(B) receptor function in retrogradely labeled spinally projecting PVN neurons using whole cell patch-clamp recording in brain slices in SHR and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. Bath application of the GABA(B) receptor agonist baclofen significantly decreased the spontaneous firing activity of labeled PVN neurons in both SHR and WKY rats.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress leads to the accumulation of misfolded proteins in the ER lumen and initiates the unfolded protein response (UPR). Components of the UPR are important in pancreatic development, and recent studies have indicated that the UPR is activated in the arginine model of acute pancreatitis. However, the effects of secretagogues on UPR components in the pancreas are unknown.

Purpose: To determine the feasibility and safety of ultrasonographically (US) guided percutaneous radiofrequency (RF) ablation in the local treatment of invasive breast carcinomas 2 cm or less in greatest diameter.
Materials And Methods: RF ablation of 21 malignant lesions was performed in 20 patients immediately before their scheduled lumpectomy or mastectomy. A 15-gauge needle electrode was placed in the lesions, and the prongs of the needle electrode were deployed with real-time US guidance.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a key role in the growth and metastasis of solid tumors. We generated a fusion protein containing VEGF(121) linked by a flexible G(4)S tether to the toxin gelonin (rGel) and expressed this as a soluble protein in bacteria. Purified VEGF(121)/rGel migrated as an 84-kDa homodimer under nonreducing conditions.

Because the administration of hematopoietic growth factors and the use of stem cell support often fails to alleviate the neutropenic phase induced by cytotoxic drugs, several investigators have attempted to expand ex vivo hematopoietic progenitors for clinical use. These attempts have clearly shown that the cultured cells are functional and can be safely administered to patients, but that the in vivo performance is disappointing and the concept as a whole is not yet clinically useful. The major reasons for these unsuccessful attempts are thought to be cumbersome cell fractionation techniques, contamination, prolonged incubation, and the use of less than ideal cytokine combinations.

Background And Methods: We describe the epidemiology, cancer prevention strategies, and educational messages to be learned from four characteristic cancers in Egypt: urinary bladder, liver, lung, and early-onset colorectal cancers.
Results: For bladder cancer, effective and convenient treatment of schistosomiasis, using social marketing and mass media in public and medical education has contributed dramatically to primary prevention of bladder cancer in Egypt. For liver cancer, educating hospital administrators to remove structural barriers to good practice may help the control of hepatitis transmission and related liver cancer.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop an imaging technique to measure and monitor tumor cells undergoing programmed death caused by radiation and chemotherapy using 99mTc-EC-annexin V. Annexin V has been used to measure programmed cell death both in vitro and in vivo. Assessment of apoptosis would be useful to evaluate the efficacy and mechanisms of therapy and disease progression or regression.
