Molecular Phosphide Complexes of Zirconium.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, University of Pennsylvania, 231 S 34th St, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19104, United States.

Molecular Zr phosphides are extremely rare, with no examples containing a one-coordinated and terminal triple-bonded phosphorus atom. We report here an isolable and relatively stable Zr phosphide complex, [(PN)Zr≡P{μ-Na(OEt)}] (), stemming from a cyclometalated Zr-hydride, [(PN)(PN')Zr(H)] (), and NaPH. Complex is prepared from two- or one-electron reductions of precursors [(PN)ZrCl] () or metastable Zr[(PN)ZrCl], respectively.

The biochemical composition and structure of the brain are in a rapid change during the exuberant stage of fetal and neonatal development. H-MRS is a noninvasive tool that can evaluate brain metabolites in healthy fetuses and infants as well as those with neurological diseases. This review aims to provide readers with an understanding of 1) the basic principles and technical considerations relevant to H-MRS in the fetal-neonatal brain and 2) the role of H-MRS in early fetal-neonatal development brain research.

Self-Organized Protonic Conductive Nanochannel Arrays for Ultra-High-Density Data Storage.

Nano Lett

January 2025

National Laboratory of Solid States Microstructures, School of Physics, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210093, People's Republic of China.

While the highest-performing memristors currently available offer superior storage density and energy efficiency, their large-scale integration is hindered by the random distribution of filaments and nonuniform resistive switching in memory cells. Here, we demonstrate the self-organized synthesis of a type of two-dimensional protonic coordination polymers with high crystallinity and porosity. Hydrogen-bond networks containing proton carriers along its nanochannels enable uniform resistive switching down to the subnanoscale range.

Combination therapy with anti-angiogenic drugs and immune checkpoint inhibitors has shown enhanced clinical activity and has been approved for the treatment of multiple tumor types. Despite extensive research, predictive biomarkers for combination therapy remain poorly understood. Microvessel density (MVD), a surrogate marker for aberrant angiogenesis measured by immunohistochemistry (IHC), has been associated with response to monotherapy with anti-angiogenesis inhibitors.

Aims: Crovalimab is a novel C5 inhibitor administered first intravenously and then subcutaneously in patients with paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) naive to complement inhibition or switching from eculizumab or ravulizumab. Crovalimab showed efficacy and safety comparable to eculizumab in the pivotal COMMODORE 2 and supporting studies.

Methods: We characterized crovalimab pharmacokinetics and the relationship between exposure pharmacokinetic parameters and pharmacodynamic biomarkers, efficacy and safety endpoints using pooled data (healthy volunteers [n = 9], naive [n = 210] and switched [n = 211] patients).

Neighborhood opportunity and residential instability: associations with mental health in middle childhood.

J Child Psychol Psychiatry

January 2025

Epidemiology Branch, Division of Population Health Research, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA.

Background: Neighborhood quality may contribute to child mental health, but families with young children often move, and residential instability has also been tied to adverse mental health. This study's primary goal was to disentangle the effects of neighborhood quality from those of residential instability on mental health in middle childhood.

Methods: 1,946 children from 1,652 families in the Upstate KIDS cohort from New York state, US, were followed prospectively from birth to age 10.

Extending Density-Corrected Density Functional Theory to Large Molecular Systems.

J Phys Chem Lett

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Yonsei University, 50 Yonsei-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul 03722, Korea.

Practical density-corrected density functional theory (DC-DFT) calculations rely on Hartree-Fock (HF) densities, which can be computationally expensive for systems with over a hundred atoms. We extend the applicability of HF-DFT using the dual-basis method, where the density matrix from a smaller basis set is used to estimate the HF solution on a larger basis set. Benchmarks on many systems, including the GMTKN55 database for main-group chemistry, and the L7 and S6L data sets for large molecular systems demonstrate the efficacy of our approach.

Basin-Size Mapping: Prediction of Metastable Polymorph Synthesizability Across TaC-TaN Alloys.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

Department of Metallurgical and Materials Enginerring, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado 80401, United States.

The sizes of the basins of attraction on the potential energy surface are helpful indicators in determining the experimental synthesizability of metastable phases. In principle, these basins can be controlled with changes in thermodynamic conditions such as composition, pressure, and surface energy. Herein, we use random structure sampling to computationally study how alloying smoothly perturbs basin of attraction sizes.

Background: Hypertension, a leading global risk factor for mortality and disability, disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minorities. Our study investigates the association between the type of prior antihypertensive medication use and the likelihood of cardiovascular events (CVE) and assesses whether the patient's race influences this relationship.

Methods: A retrospective study of 14 836 hypertension cases aged ≥ 40 years was conducted using data from HCA Healthcare between 2017 and 2023.

Background: The accurate and prompt diagnosis of infections is essential for improving patient outcomes and preventing bacterial drug resistance. Host gene expression profiling as an approach to infection diagnosis holds great potential in assisting early and accurate diagnosis of infection.

Methods: To improve the precision of infection diagnosis, we developed InfectDiagno, a rank-based ensemble machine learning algorithm for infection diagnosis via host gene expression patterns.

Determining the harvest location of timber is crucial to enforcing international regulations designed to protect natural resources and to tackle illegal logging and associated trade in forest products. Stable isotope ratio analysis (SIRA) can be used to verify claims of timber harvest location by matching levels of naturally occurring stable isotopes within wood tissue to location-specific ratios predicted from reference data ("isoscapes"). However, overly simple models for predicting isoscapes have so far limited the confidence in derived predictions of timber provenance.
