Article Synopsis
  • This study assesses the relationship between vitreous opacities, measured using quantitative ultrasound (QUS), and the impact of floaters on contrast sensitivity (CS) and quality of life (as measured by the Visual Function Questionnaire [VFQ]).
  • Results indicated strong correlations between QUS parameters and both CS and VFQ scores, highlighting the potential of QUS for objectively evaluating vitreous structure abnormalities.
  • The findings suggest that QUS could be an important tool for assessing the severity of vitreous disease and monitoring treatment responses in patients with floaters.

September 2014

VMR Institute for Vitreous Macula Retina, Huntington Beach, California, United States Doheny Eye Institute, Los Angeles, California, United States.

Purpose: Macular pucker (MP) and macular hole (MH) are vitreomaculopathies treated by vitrectomy and membrane peel. The complication of postoperative central scotoma can be associated with significant reduction in visual acuity (VA). We seek to determine whether retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) disruption is the pathophysiologic basis of this defect.
