Leptin increases focal inflammation and osteolysis induced by polyethylene particles in leptin-deficient ob/ob mice suggesting the adipokine, an important immune modulator, contributes to orthopedic implant failure. Focal inflammation leads to bone loss at distant skeletal sites, and it is plausible that leptin also contributes to this response. We tested this possibility in 6-week-old female ob/ob mice (6-8/group) by evaluating bone architecture, turnover, and gene expression 12 days following surgical placement of polyethylene particles over calvaria.

This was a secondary analysis of patients treated with EVT for AIS due to occlusive carotid artery dissection and tandem occlusion included in the retrospective international Antithrombotic Treatment for Stroke Prevention in Cervical Artery Dissection (STOP-CAD) study.

We performed a retrospective cohort study using both inpatient and outpatient claims data on Medicare beneficiaries between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2018. The exposure was a new diagnosis of non-traumatic intracranial hemorrhage, defined as a composite of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and subdural hemorrhage (SDH).

Validation of a Novel MRI Biomarker of Infarct Severity to Predict Functional Outcome After Endovascular Thrombectomy.

Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) dramatically improves clinical outcomes, but the final infarct volume (FIV) on MRI only accounts for a minority of the treatment effect. An imaging biomarker that more strongly correlates with post-EVT functional outcome would be helpful for clinical prognosis and serve as a surrogate outcome measure in trials of EVT-adjuvant therapies. Here, we aimed to validate a novel MRI-based metric, infarct density, which leverages post-EVT apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) as a marker of infarct severity.

Dry eye disease (DED) is one of the most commonly diagnosed eye disorders, with a prevalence ranging from 5 to 50%, depending on the geographic location. DED is a multifactorial disorder of the tears and ocular surface, which results in symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface. It is also accompanied by increased osmolarity of the tear film and inflammation of the surface of the eye.

Acute kidney injury and ANCA positivity in a patient treated with glecaprevir/pibrentasvir: a case report.

Background: Glecaprevir/pibrentasvir is an effective antiviral therapy for hepatitis C virus infection and is generally regarded safe in patients with renal impairment. However, renal complications are a notable, albeit rare, concern.

Case Presentation: We report a case of acute kidney injury in a man in his 50s with chronic hepatitis C virus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, morbid obesity, a history of heroin dependence, and untreated type 2 diabetes mellitus.
