Clinical Experiences Using Family Based Treatment for Eating Disorders.

Objective: Despite the availability of several evidence-based treatments for eating disorders (EDs), including Family-Based Treatment (FBT), therapist drift from evidence-based treatments in real-life clinical settings is common. This study explores clinicians' use of FBT techniques and identifies clinician-reported barriers to their use in real-world settings.

Methods: Clinicians (N = 54) who self-identified as using FBT for EDs were recruited through social media, professional listservs, and mental health provider databases.

Objectives: Since physician-assisted dying (PAD) has become a part of the clinical dialogue in the United States (US) and other Western countries, it has spawned controversy in the moral, ethical, and legal realm, with significant cross-country variation. The phenomenon of PAD includes 2 practices: Euthanasia and medical aid in dying (MAiD). Although euthanasia has been allowed in different parts of the world, in the US it is illegal.

Effects of Lipid Headgroups on the Mechanical Properties and In Vitro Cellular Internalization of Liposomes.

We performed all-atom and coarse-grained simulations of lipid bilayer mixtures of the unsaturated lipid DOPC, with saturated lipids having the same 18-carbon acyl tails and different headgroups, to understand their mechanical properties. The secondary lipids were DSPG, DSPA, DSPS, DSPC, and DSPE. The DOPC:DSPG system with 65:35 molar ratio was the softest, with area compressibility modulus ∼ 22% smaller than the pure DOPC value.

Evaluating the Safety and Usability of an Over-the-Counter Medical Device for Adults With Mild to Moderate Hearing Loss: Formative and Summative Usability Testing.

Background: Only 15% of the nearly 30 million Americans with hearing loss use hearing aids, partly due to high cost, stigma, and limited access to professional hearing care. Hearing impairment in adults can lead to social isolation and depression and is associated with an increased risk of falls. Given the persistent barriers to hearing aid use, the Food and Drug Administration issued a final rule to allow over-the-counter hearing aids to be sold directly to adult consumers with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss at pharmacies, stores, and online retailers without seeing a physician or licensed hearing health care professional.

Barriers to Adherence with Clinic Visits in Patients with Uveitis.

Purpose: To assess the patient barriers to adherence with appointment follow-up in patients with ocular inflammatory disorders across the United States.

Methods: This was a multicenter study of adult and pediatric patients at the Wilmer Eye Institute, University of Texas at Austin, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Veterans Administration Hospital, and Washington University of St. Louis.

Are Women Physicians Underrecognized for National Awards in Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine? An Observational Study.

Introduction/aims: Institutions and organizations, including the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM), have committed to embracing principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Notwithstanding this commitment, studies repeatedly demonstrate that women physicians are less likely to receive awards in medicine and research compared to their male counterparts. Whether women physicians are less likely to be recognized with AANEM awards is unknown.

A phase II study of ramucirumab and somatostatin analog therapy in patients with advanced neuroendocrine tumors.

Objectives: Well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are highly vascular tumors characterized by their expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). This trial investigated the activity of ramucirumab, a monoclonal antibody that targets VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) and inhibits activity of VEGF, in combination with somatostatin analog therapy in patients (pts) with advanced extra-pancreatic NET.

Methods: We conducted a single-arm phase II trial enrolling pts with advanced, progressive extra-pancreatic NET.

Purpose: To develop and evaluate a physics-driven, saturation contrast-aware, deep-learning-based framework for motion artifact correction in CEST MRI.

Methods: A neural network was designed to correct motion artifacts directly from a Z-spectrum frequency (Ω) domain rather than an image spatial domain. Motion artifacts were simulated by modeling 3D rigid-body motion and readout-related motion during k-space sampling.

Generalizable, sequence-invariant deep learning image reconstruction for subspace-constrained quantitative MRI.

Purpose: To develop a deep subspace learning network that can function across different pulse sequences.

Methods: A contrast-invariant component-by-component (CBC) network structure was developed and compared against previously reported spatiotemporal multicomponent (MC) structure for reconstructing MR Multitasking images. A total of 130, 167, and 16 subjects were imaged using T, T-T, and T-T- -fat fraction (FF) mapping sequences, respectively.

Data science is an emerging field that provides new analytical methods. It incorporates novel data sources (eg, internet data) and methods (eg, machine learning) that offer valuable and timely insights into public health issues, including injury and violence prevention. The objective of this research was to describe ethical considerations for public health data scientists conducting injury and violence prevention-related data science projects to prevent unintended ethical, legal, and social consequences, such as loss of privacy or loss of public trust.

Although the 16S (and 18S) rRNA gene has been an essential tool in classifying prokaryotes, using a single locus to revise bacteria taxonomy can introduce unwanted artifacts. There was a recent proposition to split the Methylobacterium genus, which contains diverse plant-associated strains and is important for agriculture and biotechnology, into two genera. Resting strongly on the phylogeny of 16S rRNA, 11 species of Methylobacterium were transferred to a newly proposed genus Methylorubrum.

A Hybrid Vacuum Flange RF Oscillator for Low-Cost Mass Spectrometry.

In this communication we report the construction of a printed circuit board which mounts directly to the vacuum chamber of a mass spectrometer and produces the RF waveforms needed by many nonmass-selective devices such as ion guides and ion funnels. Our device is designed to replace a standard KF40 flange, can maintain vacuum chamber pressures of less than 10 Torr, and contains the circuitry of the open-source Wisconsin Oscillator RF power supply to generate RF waveforms of 1-4 MHz and up to 200 V. In this iteration of the Wisconsin Oscillator, we also introduce a variable resistor to control the output RF amplitude and show that its ion transmission capabilities are identical to those provided by commercial RF power supplies.

Hospice Referral Rate Disparities of American Indian/Alaska Native Kidney Transplant Recipients with End-Stage Kidney Disease: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis.

Introduction: American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) persons disproportionately suffer from end-stage kidney disease caused by diabetes (ESKD-D). Kidney transplant is the most desirable option to treating ESKD-D, but remains unattainable for many AI/AN persons, especially in rural South Dakota (SD). Additionally, palliative and hospice care options for AI/AN with any serious illness in SD are largely inaccessible.

Microbial Production of Ectoine: A Review.

Ectoine is an important natural secondary metabolite widely used in biomedical fields, novel cosmetics development, and the food industry. Due to the increasing market demand for ectoine, more cost-effective production methods are being explored. With the rapid development of synthetic biology and metabolic engineering technologies, the production of ectoine using traditional halophilic bacteria is gradually being replaced by higher-yielding and environmentally friendly nonhalophilic engineered strains.

Belzutifan, an FDA-approved hypoxia-inducible factor-2α (HIF-2α) inhibitor, has shown promise in inhibiting tumor growth; however, its clinical efficacy is hindered by its low solubility, rapid clearance, and limited bioavailability. In this study, we present a strategy using porous silicon (pSi) microparticles and nanoparticles as carriers for the sustained delivery of benzoate to MCC cells.
