Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York 12180, United States.

Ion optics are crucial for spectrometric methods such as mass spectrometry (MS) and ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). Among the wide selection of ion optics, temporal ion gates are of particular importance for time-of-flight MS (TOF-MS) and drift-tube IMS. Commonly implemented as electrostatic ion gates, these optics offer a rapid, efficient means to block ion beams and form discrete ion packets for subsequent analysis.

Gold nanoparticles can exhibit unique physical and chemical properties, such as plasmon resonances or photoluminescence. These nanoparticles have many atoms, which leads to high computational costs for density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In this work, we used the FLARE++ (fast learning of atomistic rare events) code and incorporated an active learning algorithm to construct force fields for gold thiolate-protected nanoclusters.

We present a model to describe the concentration-dependent growth of protein filaments. Our model contains two states, a low entropy/high affinity ordered state and a high entropy/low affinity disordered state. Consistent with experiments, our model shows a diffusion-limited linear growth regime at low concentration, followed by a concentration-independent plateau at intermediate concentrations, and rapid disordered precipitation at the highest concentrations.

Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, NC, USA; University Program in Genetics and Genomics, Duke University, Durham, NC, USA; Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, NC, USA. Electronic address:

Most genetic variants identified through genome-wide association studies (GWAS) are suspected to be regulatory in nature, but only a small fraction colocalize with expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs, variants associated with expression of a gene). Therefore, it is hypothesized but largely untested that integration of disease GWAS with context-specific eQTLs will reveal the underlying genes driving disease associations. We used colocalization and transcriptomic analyses to identify shared genetic variants and likely causal genes associated with critically ill COVID-19 and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Background: K-edge subtraction (KES) imaging is a dual-energy imaging technique that enhances contrast by subtracting images taken with x-rays that are above and below the K-edge energy of a specified contrast agent. The resulting reconstruction spatially identifies where the contrast agent accumulates, even when obscured by complex and heterogeneous distributions of human tissue. This method is most successful when x-ray sources are quasimonoenergetic and tunable, conditions that have traditionally only been met at synchrotrons.

Cysteine S-conjugate sulfoxide β-lyase activity for human ACCS.

FEBS J

January 2025

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA, USA.

1-Aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase (ACCS) catalyzes the conversion of S-adenosyl-methionine to 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC), a rate-limiting step in ethylene biosynthesis. A gene encoding a putative ACCS protein was identified in the human genome two decades ago. It has been shown to not exhibit any canonical ACC synthase activity and its true function remains obscure.

Highly Permselective Contorted Polyamide Desalination Membranes with Enhanced Free Volume Fabricated by mLbL Assembly.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, University of Houston, 4226 Martin Luther King Blvd, Houston, Texas 77204, United States.

The permeability-selectivity trade-off in polymeric desalination membranes limits the efficiency and increases the costs of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration systems. Ultrathin contorted polyamide films with enhanced free volume demonstrate an impressive 8-fold increase in water permeance while maintaining equivalent salt rejection compared to conventional polyamide membranes made with -phenylenediamine and trimesoyl chloride monomers. The solution-based molecular layer-by-layer (mLbL) deposition technique employed for membrane fabrication sequentially reacts a shape-persistent contorted diamine monomer with a trimesoyl chloride monomer, forming highly cross-linked, dense polyamide networks while avoiding the kinetic and mass transfer limitations of traditional interfacial polymerization.

NLRX1 limits inflammatory neurodegeneration in the anterior visual pathway.

J Neuroinflammation

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Division of Neuroimmunology, School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, 21287, USA.

Chronic innate immune activation in the central nervous system (CNS) significantly contributes to neurodegeneration in progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). Using multiple experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) models, we discovered that NLRX1 protects neurons in the anterior visual pathway from inflammatory neurodegeneration. We quantified retinal ganglion cell (RGC) density and optic nerve axonal degeneration, gliosis, and T-cell infiltration in Nlrx1 and wild-type (WT) EAE mice and found increased RGC loss and axonal injury in Nlrx1 mice compared to WT mice in both active immunization EAE and spontaneous opticospinal encephalomyelitis (OSE) models.
