With the accumulation of knowledge on the relation between psychological stress and gut microbiota, there is growing interest in controlling stress and/or mood disorders via probiotic supplementation. We aimed to examine the effect of probiotic TMC3115 (TMC3115) supplementation using a sub-chronic and mild social defeat stress murine model in this study. TM3115 supplementation maintained body weight gain and alleviated a polydipsia-like symptom induced by the stress.

In this study, we investigated suckling behavior and the distance between a foal and its mare as indicators of foal growth in Hokkaido native horses (HKD) during the first 40 days of life. Direct observations were made of 22 mare and foal pairs from two consecutive days 1 and 2, 5 and 6, 10 and 11, 20 and 21, 30 and 31, and 40 and 41 after birth by focal animal sampling for 3 h per day. Suckling behavior was continuously recorded, along with the terminator.

In this study, we investigated maternal effects on the growth of Hokkaido native horses kept outdoors throughout the year. We used the data on body weight (BW), height at withers (HW), heart girth (HG), and cannon circumference (CC) of 517 foals during the first year of life to (1) examine the growth patterns by comparing six linear mixed models and (2) analyze the maternal effect on BW, HW, HG, and CC for each month by estimating variance components. The segmented polynomial third-order regression equation was selected as the best model for all the traits.

Recently, the plywood industry has been using low-molecule phenol (LMP) to enhance the dimensional stability of inferior-quality wood, along with copper naphthenate to increase veneer durability against staining fungi as a wood preservative. In the present study, we studied the effects of gibberellic acid (GA) on chlorophyll and carotenoid metabolites and related gene expression during the regreening process in Valencia orange fruits (Citrus sinensis Osbeck). During the regreening, fruits treated with GA turned green much faster than those of the control. Compared with untreated fruits, chlorophyll accumulation was induced and the content of carotenoids (β-cryptoxanthin, all-trans-violaxanthin, and 9-cis-violaxanthin) was decreased by the GA treatment.

The kynurenine (Kyn) pathway plays crucial roles in several inflammation-induced disorders such as depression. In this study, we measured Kyn and other related molecules in the blood plasma, brain, and urine of male C57BL/6J mice (B6) fed non-purified (MF) and semi-purified (AIN-93G and AIN-93M) standard rodent diets. Mice fed MF had increased plasma Kyn levels compared with those on AIN93-based diets, as well as decreased hippocampal Kyn levels compared with those fed AIN-93G.

The lactic acid bacteria involved in fermentation and components in the tea leaves of Awa-bancha, a post-fermented tea produced in Naka, Kamikatsu, and Miyoshi, Tokushima, were investigated in the present study. Lactic acid bacteria were isolated from tea leaves after anaerobic fermentation and identified by multiplex PCR targeting of the recA gene and 16S ribosomal RNA gene homology. Lactiplantibacillus pentosus was the most frequently isolated species in Naka and Kamikatsu and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum in Miyoshi.

Lectins are proteins with the ability to recognize and bind to specific glycan structures. These molecules play important roles in many biological systems and are actively being studied because of their ability to detect glycan biomarkers for many diseases. To identify Lysinibacillus strains with the potential to function as plant biostimulants, we screened 10 previously isolated Lysinibacillus strains from the rhizosphere and soil for their plant growth-promoting (PGP) effects. In vitro tests showed that all strains produced indole-3-acetic acid. In primary screening, the PGP effects of these strains were assessed on spinach seedlings grown on Jiffy-7 pellets; strains GIC31, GIC41, and GIC51 markedly promoted shoot growth.

A new disease in rice that is characterized by leaf bleaching was recently identified in some fields in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. The present study was the first to isolate and identify the pathogen of this disease. We confirmed that leaf bleaching symptoms were due to infection with Methylobacterium indicum bacteria using molecular biology approaches.

In the present study, we examined the effects of taxifolin (TXF) on glucose metabolism in cultured L6 muscle cells (myotubes) and in type 2 diabetic (T2D) model KK-A/Ta mice. Lactate has diverse roles in the brain at the molecular and behavioral levels under physiological and pathophysiological conditions. This study investigates whether lysine lactylation (Kla), a lactate-derived post-translational modification in macrophages, occurs in brain cells and if it does, whether Kla is induced by the stimuli that accompany changes in lactate levels. Here, we show that Kla in brain cells is regulated by neural excitation and social stress, with parallel changes in lactate levels.

A multiplex PCR assay was developed to simultaneously identify 22 mammalian species (alpaca, Asiatic black bear, Bactrian camel, brown rat, cat, cattle, common raccoon, dog, European rabbit, goat, horse, house mouse, human, Japanese badger, Japanese wild boar, masked palm civet, pig, raccoon dog, red fox, sheep, Siberian weasel, and sika deer) and four poultry species (chicken, domestic turkey, Japanese quail, and mallard), even from a biological sample containing a DNA mixture of multiple species. The assay was designed to identify species through multiplex PCR and capillary electrophoresis, with a combination of amplification of a partial region of the mitochondrial D-loop by universal primer sets and a partial region of the cytochrome b (cyt b) gene by species-specific primer sets. The assay was highly sensitive, with a detection limit of 100 copies of mitochondrial DNA.
