Research and Innovation Center for Graphene and 2D Materials (RIC2D), Khalifa University, P.O. Box 127788, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Electronic address:

This study investigates the surface modification of TiCT MXene using tms-EDTA (EDTA@MXene) to develop an efficient adsorbent for divalent heavy metal cations, such as Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Zn²⁺, from contaminated water. EDTA@MXene showed significantly enhanced adsorption capacities for these ions compared to pristine MXene. Using nickel ion (Ni²⁺) as a model adsorbate, EDTA@MXene demonstrated remarkable removal efficiency, reaching a maximum adsorption capacity of 249.

Feasibility and efficacy of the forced oscillation technique in patients with lysosomal storage diseases.

Sci Rep

February 2025

Department of Genetics and Genomics, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, United Arab Emirates University, Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.

Lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) are a diverse group of inborn errors of metabolism, which involves the storage of macromolecules within the lysosome due to the absence of or deficiency in lysosomal enzymes. In this condition, respiratory dysfunction is the common cause of morbidity and mortality. Thus, an objective measurement examination of pulmonary function, such as spirometry, is essential for the diagnosis and management of respiratory conditions.

The utilization of Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is widespread in several image watermarking methods to attain a more favorable balance between the demands of watermarking. Nevertheless, SVD exhibits some limitations, including false positives, limited capacity, and security issues. In order to overcome these challenges, a new approach to image watermarking has been introduced, which utilizes a combination of Integer Wavelet Transform (IWT), SVD, and chaos models.

This Letter presents a search for highly ionizing magnetic monopoles in 262  μb^{-1} of ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collision data at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.36  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. A new methodology that exploits the properties of clusters of hits reconstructed in the innermost silicon detector layers is introduced to study highly ionizing particles in heavy-ion data.

Electronic address:

Edible coatings have been widely explored as packaging substitutes. Application of edible coatings on mushrooms remains under-explored, due to its highly porous nature, with limited benefits to date. Herein, we thoroughly benchmark six polysaccharides, one polyphenol (lignin derivative), and three lipids as edible coatings for mushrooms, namely Agaricus bisporus.

In this work, glycerol and elemental sulfur-based porous carbon adsorbents with sulfur‑phosphorus co-doping and subsequent HO treatment were developed for CO capture. The best adsorbent for capturing CO among the developed adsorbents was P‑carbon-2000mgS-HO, which had surface area of 652 m/g, a total pore volume of 0.446 cm/g, an average pore size of 2.

Although topiramate and valproate are antiseizure medications that have many contraindications and could produce many side effects, they are still used as migraine preventive therapy in middle- and low-income countries. Several trials compared valproate versus topiramate in patients with migraine showed inconclusive results. We aimed to evaluate the tolerability and efficacy of valproate compared to topiramate in migraineurs from the Middle East and North Africa.

Objective: Quad bike riders in Dubai (UAE) constitute a highly diverse group with varying driving skills and familiarity with the desert environment. In the absence of evidence on the quad bike riders in the region, we attempted to describe the most vulnerable risk groups using routinely collected injury data. This may hopefully inform the most effective injury prevention strategies for the region.

Introduction: Oral semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist, requires administration on an empty stomach with up to 120 mL of water, followed by no intake of food, beverages, or other oral medications for at least 30 min to ensure optimal absorption. These instructions can be challenging to adhere to during Ramadan when patients fast for extended periods. The O-SEMA-FAST study assessed the impact of fasting on adherence to oral semaglutide dosing instructions and its subsequent effects on glycaemic control and body weight.

Investigating phase coupling of respiratory sinus arrhythmia and slow wave sleep in obstructive sleep apnea patients with and without depression.

Sleep Med

February 2025

Healthcare Engineering Innovation Center, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology, Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Electronic address:

Phase coherence (λ) between respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and respiration has emerged as a promising metric for assessing the role of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and slow wave sleep (SWS) activities in healthy subjects. This study aims to investigate how λ and SWS activity differ between Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patients with and without major depressive disorder (MDD) during overnight sleep and explore whether the correlation between λ and SWS activity exists among those OSA patients compared to healthy individuals. Overnight electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiograms (ECG), and breathing using plethysmography were recorded from 104 subjects, including 35 healthy individuals (control), 34 OSA subjects with MDD (OSAD+) and 35 OSA subjects without MDD (OSAD+).

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), a widespread pandemic and severe health issue, is triggered by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); there is no specific vaccine to cure this infection, and the situation is worsening. Therefore, this research sought to develop a vaccine with multiple epitopes against this infection targeting envelope glycoprotein (vital in host-cell interaction) through the immunoinformatics and viroinformatics approach. We identified one B-cell, eight MHC-I, and four MHC-II epitopes on its immunogen-assisted screening.
