Background: Understanding how individuals obtain medical information, especially amid changing guidance, is important for improving outreach and communication strategies. In particular, during a public health emergency, interest in unsafe or illegitimate medications can delay access to appropriate treatments and foster mistrust in the medical system, which can be detrimental at both individual and population levels. It is thus key to understand factors associated with said interest.

Lethal COVID-19 outcomes are attributed to classic cytokine storm. We revisit this using RNA sequencing of nasopharyngeal and 40 autopsy samples from patients dying of SARS-CoV-2. Subsets of the 100 top-upregulated genes in nasal swabs are upregulated in the heart, lung, kidney, and liver, but not mediastinal lymph nodes.

Importance: Individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) often report vision problems despite having normal visual acuity and fundus examinations. Diagnostics are needed for these patients.
Objective: To determine if a battery of assessments or machine-learning approaches can aid in diagnosing visual dysfunction in patients with mild TBI.

Objectives: The SDMPH 10-year anniversary conference created an opportunity for a researcher to present at a professional association conference to advance their research by seeking consensus of statements using Delphi methodology.
Methods: Conference attendees and SDMPH members who did not attend the conference were identified as Delphi experts. Experts rated their agreement of each statement on a 7- point linear numeric scale.

Derangements in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) of burn patients are poorly understood and lacking consistent data. This leads to an absence of consensus regarding pharmacologic management of burn patients, complicating their care. In order to effectively manage burn critical illness, knowledge of pharmacologic parameters and their changes is necessary.

As mortality relating to severe acute burn injury improves, patients are surviving longer into the critical care phase, which is commonly complicated by multisystem organ failure. Extracorporeal organ support (ECOS) represents a set of potential therapeutic technologies for managing patients with organ-specific complications. This article provides a comprehensive review of the existing literature, focusing on the use of continuous kidney replacement therapy, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal, and extracorporeal blood purification.

Infection is very common in burn patients because they lose the primary barrier from microorganism invasion, the skin. While there are attempts to prevent infections, topical antimicrobials and systemic prophylaxis tend to lead to more resistant organisms. After the initial resuscitation, the most common cause of death is from sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.

Medical device companies and regulatory bodies rely on a nondestructive bacterial sampling technique specified by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM E1173-15) to test preoperative skin preparations (PSPs). Despite the widespread use of PSPs, opportunistic skin-flora pathogens remain the most significant contributor to surgical site infections, suggesting that the ASTM testing standard may be underreporting true dermal bioburden. We hypothesized that ASTM E1173-15 may fail to capture deep skin-dwelling flora.

Purpose Of Review: This review aims to describe the role of limbic system-associated membrane protein (LSAMP) in normal- and pathophysiology, and its potential implications in oncogenesis. We have summarized research articles reporting the role of LSAMP in the development of a variety of malignancies, such as clear cell renal cell carcinoma, prostatic adenocarcinoma, lung adenocarcinoma, osteosarcoma, neuroblastoma, acute myeloid leukemia, and epithelial ovarian cancer. We also examine the current understanding of how defects in LSAMP gene function may contribute to oncogenesis.

Military physicians serve as staff officers where both leading and following are important competencies. Navigating between the two roles is a necessary skill to avoid undermining one's boss and to support the mission. This case describes a deployed junior officer reconciling his role as the lead medical expert while supporting a Commander's decision, highlighting the challenges of followership in situations of disagreement.

Drosophila oogenesis has long been an important model for understanding myriad cellular processes controlling development, RNA biology and patterning. Flies are easily fed drugs to disrupt various molecular pathways. However, this is often done under poor nutrient conditions that adversely affect oogenesis, thus making analysis challenging.

Background: Admissions interviews are frequently used to assess personal and interpersonal attributes required for successful medical practice. Using simulation in interviews to engage applicants in realistic medical scenarios to assess these attributes is novel. This study evaluates applicant perceptions of simulation within multiple mini-interviews (MMI) and reports on subsequent student program performance.

Background: Post-traumatic headache (PTH) is a common comorbid symptom affecting at least one-third of patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). While neuroinflammation is known to contribute to the development of PTH, the cellular mechanisms in the trigeminal system crucial for understanding the pathogenesis of PTH remain unclear.
Methods: A non-invasive repetitive mTBI (4 times with a 24-h interval) was induced in male mice and effect of mTBI was tested on either bregma or pre-bregma position on the head.

Introduction: Prognosis is a forecast of the likely course of a disease and its future implications on treatment outcomes. The significance of periodontal prognosis in clinical practice is evident by its influence on treatment planning, communication, and in the retrospective evaluation of treatment results. While there are multiple well-known prognosis systems reported in the periodontal dental literature, there is an absence of data on the actual use of prognosis assignment among practicing clinicians.

Objective: The objective of this study is to compare the effect of the location of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) from the native bone and the periosteum for vertical alveolar bone augmentation.
Materials And Methods: Mandibular, chronic, standardized, bilateral, and vertical defects in 12 beagle dogs were evaluated using four modalities: a xenograft alone (XENO; n = 6); rhBMP-2 alone (BMP; n = 6); a technique with rhBMP-2 close to the host bone covered by xenograft (SAN; n = 6); and a technique with rhBMP-2 close to the flap on top of the xenograft (LAS; n = 6). After 8 weeks, a series of in vivo inspections, fluorescence microscopy, histologic and histomorphometric evaluations, and micro-CT analyses.
