Background And Aims: The emergence of biologic therapy has coincided with a decline in surgery rates for Crohn's disease (CD). This study aims to describe the disease course, including intra-abdominal surgery rates, biologic therapy use, and variables associated with biologic therapy initiation in a cohort of newly diagnosed CD patients.
Methods: The Inflammatory Bowel Disease in South-Eastern Norway (IBSEN) III study is a population-based inception cohort study.

This study explores how select microRNAs (miRNAs) influence bone structure in humans and in transgenic mice. In trabecular bone biopsies from 84 postmenopausal women (healthy, osteopenic, and osteoporotic), we demonstrate that (deleted in lymphocytic leukemia 2)-encoded is strongly positively associated with bone mineral density (BMD) at different skeletal sites. In bone transcriptome analyses, levels correlated positively with the osteocyte characteristic transcripts (encoding sclerostin) and (Matrix Extracellular Phosphoglycoprotein), while the related showed a negative association with BMD and osteoblast markers.

Background And Aims: Fatigue is commonly observed in Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), but its association to achieving remission is not clearly established. In this study we describe the odds for fatigue in patients with CD/UC one year after diagnosis based on different definitions of remission and identified factors associated with chronic fatigue (CF) among patients in endoscopic/radiological remission.
Methods: Patients ≥18 years with CD/UC were recruited from the IBSEN III cohort.

Background: Reduced activity of the sucrase-isomaltase (SI) enzyme can cause gastrointestinal symptoms. Biochemical measurement of SI activity in small intestinal biopsies is presently considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of SI deficiency, but this invasive test is not suitable as a routine diagnostic tool.
Aim: To evaluate a C-sucrose-breath test (CSBT) as a diagnostic tool for SI deficiency in an adult population.

Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile genetic modules of viral derivation that have been co-opted to become modulators of mammalian gene expression. TEs are a major source of endogenous dsRNAs, signaling molecules able to coordinate inflammatory responses in various physiological processes. Here, we provide evidence for a positive involvement of TEs in inflammation-driven bone repair and mineralization.

Background: The relationship between gut microbiota and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) subtype is unclear. We aimed to explore whether differences in fecal bacteria composition and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels were associated with subtypes and symptoms of IBS.
Methods: All participants delivered fecal samples and self-reports on IBS Symptom Severity Score (IBS-SSS), Bristol Stool Scale (BSS), and Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS).

Treatment of hepatitis C among people who inject drugs (PWID) may be complicated by loss to follow-up and reinfection. We aimed to evaluate sustained virologic response (SVR) and reinfection, and to validate complete pharmacy dispensation as a proxy for cure among PWID enrolled in a trial of opportunistic HCV treatment. Data were obtained by reviewing the electronic patient files and supplemented by outreach HCV RNA testing.

Epidemiological evidence suggests existing comorbidity between postmenopausal osteoporosis (OP) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), but identification of possible shared genes is lacking. The skeletal global transcriptomes were analyzed in trans-iliac bone biopsies (n = 84) from clinically well-characterized postmenopausal women (50 to 86 years) without clinical CVD using microchips and RNA sequencing. One thousand transcripts highly correlated with areal bone mineral density (aBMD) were further analyzed using bioinformatics, and common genes overlapping with CVD and associated biological mechanisms, pathways and functions were identified.

Purpose: Ocular surface disease is common and it is associated with elevated concentration levels of cytokines in tear fluid. Studies of the normal variation in tear fluid inflammatory markers are lacking. New knowledge may help guide research into ocular surface disease biomarkers and therapeutics.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of opportunistic treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among hospitalized people who inject drugs (PWID).
Methods: We performed a pragmatic, stepped wedge cluster randomized trial recruiting HCV RNA positive individuals admitted for inpatient care in departments of internal medicine, addiction medicine, and psychiatry at three hospitals in Oslo, Norway. Seven departments were sequentially randomized to change from control conditions (standard of care referral to outpatient care) to intervention conditions (immediate treatment initiation).

Background: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease report multiple symptoms, but the relationships among co-occurring symptoms are poorly understood. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of symptoms and explore symptom clusters and possible associations between symptom clusters and socio-demographic and clinical variables in patients newly diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease.
Methods: The IBSEN III study is a prospective population-based inception cohort of patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Skull bone mineral density (SK-BMD) provides a suitable trait for the discovery of key genes in bone biology, particularly to intramembranous ossification, not captured at other skeletal sites. We perform a genome-wide association meta-analysis (n ~ 43,800) of SK-BMD, identifying 59 loci, collectively explaining 12.5% of the trait variance.

Background: Diet is one of the main modulators of the gut microbiota, and dietary patterns are decisive for gut-microbiota-related diseases, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The low-FODMAP diet (LFD) is commonly used to treat IBS, but its long-term effects on microbiota, symptoms and quality of life (QoL) are unclear. Alternative dietary strategies promoting beneficial gut microbiota, combined with reduced symptoms and improved QoL, are therefore of interest.

Background And Aims: Although fatigue is common in inflammatory bowel disease [IBD], its pathogenesis remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of fatigue and its associated factors in a cohort of patients newly diagnosed with IBD.
Methods: Patients ≥18 years old were recruited from the Inflammatory Bowel Disease South-Eastern Norway [IBSEN III] study, a population-based, observational inception cohort.

Individuals with coeliac disease (CeD) often experience gastrointestinal symptoms despite adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD). While we recently showed that a diet low in fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) successfully provided symptom relief in GFD-treated CeD patients, there have been concerns that the low FODMAP diet (LFD) could adversely affect the gut microbiota. Our main objective was therefore to investigate whether the LFD affects the faecal microbiota and related variables of gut health.

Purpose: This unselected, population-based cohort study aimed to determine the level of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) at the time of diagnosis compared with a reference population and identify the demographic factors, psychosocial measures, and disease activity markers associated with HRQoL.
Methods: Adult patients newly diagnosed with CD or UC were prospectively enrolled. HRQoL was measured using the Short Form 36 (SF-36) and Norwegian Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaires.

Background: Improving HCV treatment uptake among people who inject drugs (PWID) is crucial to achieving the WHO elimination targets. The aims were to evaluate HCV treatment uptake and HCV RNA prevalence in a large cohort of PWID in Norway.
Methods: Registry-based observational study where all users of the City of Oslo's low-threshold social and health services for PWID between 2010-2016 (n = 5330) were linked to HCV notifications (1990-2019) and dispensions of HCV treatment, opioid agonist treatment (OAT) and benzodiazepines (2004-2019).
