Background: Hydrocephalus is the most common complication of extraparenchymal neurocysticercosis, combining obstructive and inflammatory mechanisms that impair cerebrospinal fluid circulation.

Methods: We studied the long-term progression of neurocysticercosis-induced hydrocephalus in a rat model. We generated an experimental rat model of neurocysticercosis-induced hydrocephalus by cisternal inoculation of cysts or antigens of Taenia crassiceps and compared it with the classic model of kaolin-induced hydrocephalus.

Impact of molecular interactions with phenolic compounds on food polysaccharides functionality.

Adv Food Nutr Res

February 2020

School of Nutrition Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, ON, Canada. Electronic address:

Commercial trends based of the emergence of plant-based functional foods lead to investigate the structure-function relationship of their main bioactive constituents and their interactions in the food matrix and throughout the gastro-intestinal tract. Among these bioactive constituents, dietary polysaccharides and polyphenols have shown to interact at the molecular level and these interactions may have consequences on the polysaccharides physical and nutritional properties. The methods of investigation and mechanisms of interactions between polysaccharides and polyphenols are reviewed in light of their respective technological and nutritional functionalities.

In this study, the cultivation of in fish industry effluent was carried out to cause the depollution of the by-product and generate a protein-carotenoid-rich biomass suitable to be used in tilapia feed. The bacterium was grown in the effluent (inoculum 1% v/v, 30 ± 5 °C, 2000 ± 500 lx, 7 days) and recovered as a biomass (microfiltration + centrifugation + lyophilization), resulting in a decrease of ca. 80% in the chemical oxygen demand of the industry by-product and so putting it within the required limits for wastewater discard in Brazil.

Chiral magnetic chemical bonds in molecular states of impurities in Weyl semimetals.

Sci Rep

June 2019

Departamento de Física e Química, Unesp - Univ Estadual Paulista, 15385-000, Ilha Solteira, SP, Brazil.

We demonstrate that chirality of the electron scattering in Weyl semimetals leads to the formation of magnetic chemical bonds for molecular states of a pair of impurities. The effect is associated with the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking terms in the Hamiltonian which drive a crossover from s- to p-wave scattering. The profiles of the corresponding molecular orbitals and their spin polarizations are defined by the relative orientation of the lines connecting two Weyl nodes and two impurities.

To better understand the structure and variability of the 45S rDNA cistron and its evolutionary dynamics in grasshoppers, we performed a detailed analysis combining classical and molecular cytogenetic data with whole-genome sequencing in Abracris flavolienata, which shows extraordinary variability in the chromosomal distribution for this element. We found astonishing variability in the number and size of rDNA clusters at intra- and inter-population levels. Interestingly, FISH using distinct parts of 45S rDNA cistron (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, and ITS1) as probes revealed a distinct number of clusters, suggesting independent mobility and amplification of the 45S rDNA components.

UNESP-Univ Estadual Paulista, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia-Rua Roberto Simonsen 305, CEP 19060-900, Presidente Prudente-SP, Brazil.

Polythiophene thin films are widely studied for applications in organic electronics. However, some comparisons are still missing, regarding distinct deposition techniques and regioregularity. Here regioregular and regiorandom alkyl-substituted polythiophene derivatives (P3ATs) were deposited on solid substrates using both Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) techniques.
