Background: In humans, it is now well documented that rising paternal age is correlated with decreased sperm DNA integrity and embryonic developmental failures. On the other side of the coin, it is also reported that very young fathers such as teenagers carry an increased risk of adverse birth outcomes. These observations suggest that, at least in humans, there is an age window for optimal sperm DNA integrity.

Reliability and validity of two multidimensional self-reported physical activity questionnaires in people with chronic low back pain.

Background: Although there is some evidence for reliability and validity of self-report physical activity (PA) questionnaires in the general adult population, it is unclear whether we can assume similar measurement properties in people with chronic low back pain (LBP).

Objective: To determine the test-retest reliability of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) long-version and the Baecke Physical Activity Questionnaire (BPAQ) and their criterion-related validity against data derived from accelerometers in patients with chronic LBP.

Custom Cast Ball Attachments Used on Outdated Implants to Restore a Maxillary Implant-Supported Overdenture.

The lack of compatible prosthetic components can be a complication during oral rehabilitation using outdated implants. The aim of the present clinical report was to describe an alternative technique for the fabrication of a maxillary implant-supported overdenture in a patient with 20-year-old dental implants using castable spherical patterns and ball attachments. The patient had been wearing a relined bar/clip overdenture in the mandible on 4 external-hexagon dental implants and a relined complete denture in the maxilla on 4 internal-hexagon implants due to abutment screw fracture inside of the implants, losing the attachment system.

Caries treatment decisions among undergraduate and postgraduate students supported by visual detection systems.

Background: The difficulties of caries diagnosis and the level of examiner's experience may influence the treatment decision, resulting excessive and inefficient intervention.

Aim: This randomized experimental study evaluated caries treatment decisions made by undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students when examination was performed through conventional visual clinical examination (CVCE) and when supported by ICDAS (IC) or Nyvad's (NY) criteria.

Design: Four UG and four PG initially analyzed, by CVCE, 300 primary incisors and molars surfaces of 25 children aged 5-12 years, and choose between no treatment, non-operative, and operative treatment.

The median raphe nucleus (MRN) is related to stress resistance and defensive responses, a crucial source of serotonergic neurons that project to prosencephalic structures related to stress and anxiety. Estrogen receptors were identified in this mesencephalic structure. It is possible that the estrogen action is related to serotonin effect on somatodendritic 5-HT receptors, inhibiting the function of serotonergic neurons and thus preventing of the stress effect and inducing anxiolysis.

Altered distribution of peripheral blood dendritic cell subsets in patients with pulmonary paracoccidioidomycosis.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic mycosis caused by fungi from the genus Paracoccidioides in Latin America. PCM-patients (PCM-p) are classified as having acute/subacute or chronic (CF) clinical forms. CF is responsible for 75%-90% of all cases, affects mainly adults over 30 years old and the clinical manifestation are associated mainly with lungs and mucosa of upper airdigestive tract.

Administration of 2.5 mg of estradiol followed by 1,500 mg of progesterone to anovulatory mares promote similar uterine morphology, hormone concentrations and molecular dynamics to those observed in cyclic mares.

To test the hypothesis that the administration of 2.5 mg of estradiol benzoate (EB) followed by 1500 mg of long acting progesterone (LA P4) causes similar uterine changes and molecular dynamics in anovulatory mares to those observed in cyclic ones, we evaluated the changes of estrogen (ERα and ERβ) and progesterone receptors (PR) in anestrous, transitional and cyclic mares by RT-qPCR and immunohistochemistry. In addition, we evaluated uterine edema, tonus and estrogens and progesterone plasma profile.

Pigment epithelial-derived factor in human fetal membranes.

Objective: Our main objective was to document, pigment epithelial-derived factor (PEDF), a secreted serine protease inhibitor with anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant properties, expression in human fetal membranes from preterm prelabor rupture of the membranes (pPROM) and in in vitro cultures stimulated with cigarette smoke extract (CSE) or lipopolysaccharides (LPS), two major risk factors for pPROM (behavioral and bacterial, respectively).

Method: We documented PEDF mRNA expression in clinical samples of fetal membranes from patients with pPROM using quantitative RT-PCR. Also, mRNA and protein levels were documented in fetal membranes (from normal term cesarean sections [not in labor]) in an organ explant system stimulated with CSE or lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

Background: Oral leukoplakia is considered a potentially malignant lesion for the development of squamous cell carcinoma, and various risk factors may be related to its development and malignant transformation, including the human papillomavirus (HPV). The aim of this case-control study was to detect the presence of HPV in fresh tissue, plasma and saliva samples obtained from patients with and without oral leukoplakia, and verify the correlation of the presence of DNA of HPV between different sources of materials.

Methods: In this study, 32 patients with oral leukoplakia and 24 patients selected in a case-control manner were included.

Chronic paracoccidioidmycosis in a woman with Crohn Disease.

We report a rare case of chronic paracoccidioidomycosis(PCM) in a woman with Crohn disease in the setting of treatment with azathioprine and mesalazine. Serum tests for antigens to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, Histoplasma capsulatum, and Aspergillus fumigatus were negative. An incisional biopsy of an oral lesion with periodic acid-schiff and Grocott-methenamine silver stains revealed chronic granulomatous inflammation with multinucleated giant cells with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis within the cytoplasm, confirming the diagnosis of PCM.

Immediate implant placement into fresh extraction sockets versus delayed implants into healed sockets: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the survival rate of the implants and the peri-implant tissue changes associated with implants inserted in fresh extraction sockets and those inserted in healed sockets. At least two SLC45A2 coding SNPs [E272K (rs26722) and L374F (rs16891982)] were reported influencing normal variation of human pigmentation. Here we aimed at evaluating the influence of haplotypes of 12 SNPs within SLC45A2 in the determination of eye, hair and skin pigmentation in a highly admixed population sample and comparing their frequencies with the ones found in data retrieved from the 1000 Genomes Project.

Spatial analysis of bovine cysticercosis in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil - The needs of interventions in animal and human populations.

The Taenia saginata-cysticercosis complex is an important zoonosis for public health and an important cause of economical losses for beef supply chain in developing and industrialized countries. Despite some risk factors for high-occurrence areas have already been described, further studies are required to better understand its global epidemiology. So, this study focused on establishing the prevalence, spatial distribution and environmental and human population aspects correlated with bovine cysticercosis prevalence in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

Spatial distribution, prevalence and epidemiological risk factors of cysticercosis in cattle from state of São Paulo, Brazil, slaughtered for human consumption.

This present research focused on establishing the prevalence, geospatial distribution and epidemiological risk factors for bovine cysticercosis in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, in cattle slaughtered for human comsumption. Data about the inspection of 104,180 bovine carcasses from 215 farms and from 70 municipalities were gathered between January and December of 2012. A cluster analysis was performed in order to correlate some variables: prevalence of bovine cysticercosis, total coffee harvesting area (hectares), orange producing areas (hectares) and Human Development Index.
