Despite the development of new and advanced diagnostic approaches, monitoring the clinical evolution of accidents caused by venomous animals is still a challenge for science. In this review, we present the state of the art of laboratory tests that are routinely used for the diagnosis and monitoring of envenomings by venomous animals, as well as the use of new tools for more accurate and specific diagnoses. While a comprehensive range of tools is outlined, comprising hematological, biochemical, immunoassays, and diagnostic imaging tools, it is important to acknowledge their limitations in predicting the onset of clinical complications, since they provide an overview of organic damage after its development.

Satellite DNAs (satDNAs) are abundant components of eukaryotic genomes, playing pivotal roles in chromosomal organization, genome stability, and evolution. Here, we combined cytogenetic and genomic methods to characterize the satDNAs in the genomes of Leptidea butterflies. Leptidea is characterized by the presence of a high heterochromatin content, large genomes, and extensive chromosomal reshuffling as well as the occurrence of cryptic species.

Protein compartmentalization in the frame of a liquid-liquid phase separation is a key mechanism to optimize spatiotemporal control of biological systems. Such a compartmentalization process reduces the intrinsic noise in protein concentration due to stochasticity in gene expression. Bees are important pollinators for ecosystems and agriculture; however, populations have suffered a decline that may be associated with several factors, including habitat loss, climate change, increased vulnerability to diseases and parasites and use of pesticides. The extensive use of neonicotinoids, including imidacloprid, as agricultural pesticides, leads to their persistence in the environment and accumulation in bees, pollen, nectar, and honey, thereby inducing deleterious effects. Forager honey bees face significant exposure to pesticide residues while searching for resources outside the hive, particularly systemic pesticides like imidacloprid.

We aimed to evaluate the efficiency of hard-gelatin and hard-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) capsules as biodegradable alternative containers to plastic straws in European eel (Anguilla anguilla), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) sperm cryopreservation. Sperm samples from each European eel (n = 12) were diluted 1:8:1 (sperm: extender P1+5 % egg yolk: methanol). Gilthead seabream (n = 12) samples were individually diluted in a cryoprotectant solution of 5 % MeSO + NaCl 1 % plus BSA (10 mg mL) at a ratio of 1:6 (sperm: cryoprotectant solution).
