Lower extremity amputation as a treatment of diabetic foot ulcer is probably a major burden for the patient's family and friends, who typically act as caregivers and support the patient in coping with the physical disabilities and emotional distress. In the present prospective study, we investigated the effects of different lower extremity amputation levels for diabetic foot ulcer treatment on caregivers of patients with diabetes using the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI-12) scale. Patients with diabetic foot ulcers who underwent unilateral major amputation (above-below knee) and minor amputation of foot (heel sparing) and their caregivers were requested to volunteer to participate in this study from June 2016 to December 2018.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how gastrointestinal issues in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients relate to malnutrition and other organ complications, particularly focusing on capillary rarefaction.
  • A total of 134 SSc patients were assessed using specific tools to measure disease severity, gastrointestinal function, and nutritional status, along with nailfold video-capillaroscopy for microvasculopathy analysis.
  • Results show that patients at higher risk for malnutrition often had more severe pulmonary and skin issues and that capillary rarefaction is strongly linked to both malnutrition risk and severe gastrointestinal disease.

Most adults will experience low back pain during their lifetime, with most of these instances resolving or improving without sequelae in a few weeks. For the small number of patients with severe, recalcitrant pain, lumbar fusion may be required, particularly when concomitant leg pain or deformity is present. Lumbar interbody fusion surgery is the usual treatment for degenerative lumbar disease, but it requires a long recovery period.
