  • Inflammatory low back pain (IBP) is commonly associated with spondylarthritis (SpA) but can also be a symptom of various malignancies, both hematologic and solid tumors.
  • A study analyzed 34 patients diagnosed with malignancy-related IBP over the past decade, comparing their clinical features to a control group of patients with axial SpA.
  • Findings revealed that malignancy-related IBP patients had higher levels of inflammatory markers and a similar ratio of hematologic to solid tumors, suggesting that malignancies should be considered in differential diagnoses of IBP.

Under inflammatory conditions, macrophage dominance affects the degree of inflammation. We assessed the effects of the active vitamin D (calcitriol) administration on inflammatory processes and macrophage dominance and aimed to determine the potential positive macroscopic and histological effects in supermicrosurgical arterial anastomosis model of rats. Forty rats were divided into five groups: control surgery (Group 1), surgery with preoperative (Group 2), post-operative (Group 3), perioperative (Group 4) systemic calcitriol and surgery with local calcitriol (Group 5).

Basic Res Cardiol

December 2024

Institute for Anatomy I, Medical Faculty & Hospital Düsseldorf, Heinrich-Heine-University, Building 22.02, Floor U1, Room 15, Universitätsstraße 1, 40225, Düsseldorf, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Human cardiac functions rely on feedback mechanisms that monitor the tensile state of tissues, but the role of proprioceptive receptors in the pericardium has not been explored until now.
  • A study involving eight human pericardial specimens created a 3D map of proprioceptors, particularly focusing on Ruffini-like corpuscles (RLCs), using advanced imaging and statistical analysis.
  • Results showed that RLCs are present throughout the pericardium, with higher concentrations in specific areas, suggesting that these receptors play a crucial role in proprioceptive control and may help detect heart dilation.

We present a series of 10 patients with giant congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) in which a secondary proliferation (11 lesions) with schwannian and/or perineuriomatous differentiation developed in the course of the disease. The age of the patients (4 male and 6 female) at the time of surgery and histological assessment varied from 3 months to 57 years.
