Climate change, pollution, and deforestation have a negative impact on global mental health. There is an environmental justice dimension to this challenge as wealthy people and high-income countries are major contributors to climate change and pollution, while poor people and low-income countries are heavily affected by the consequences. Using state-of-the art data mining, we analyzed and visualized the global research landscape on mental health, climate change, pollution and deforestation over a 15-year period.

Background And Aims: In cystic fibrosis (CF) airways, impaired airway mucociliary clearance and mucus accumulation due to cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator defects contribute to inflammation, progressive structural lung damage, and decline of lung function. Physiotherapy is essential to promote mucus mobilization and removal in CF and is a key element of rehabilitation measures, but conventional techniques may be suboptimal to mobilize viscous mucus. This study aimed to test the specific effects of a novel bronchial drainage device (BDD) (Simeox®; PhysioAssist) in subjects with CF and evaluate lung function, diaphragm mobility, and sputum properties.

The present study investigated whether autobiographical memories serve to maintain feelings of intimacy in times of social isolation that result from the restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Data came from 104 young and older adults who reported three important and three social memories, that is, memories about someone the participants were unable to meet because of the pandemic-related restrictions. Our findings support that social memories more frequently serve intimacy functions than important memories do, and this difference is more pronounced for older compared to young adults.

The genomic and transcriptional landscape of primary central nervous system lymphoma.

Nat Commun

May 2022

Department of Neuropathology, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, corporate member of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Berlin Institute of Health, Berlin, Germany.

Primary lymphomas of the central nervous system (PCNSL) are mainly diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs) confined to the central nervous system (CNS). Molecular drivers of PCNSL have not been fully elucidated. Here, we profile and compare the whole-genome and transcriptome landscape of 51 CNS lymphomas (CNSL) to 39 follicular lymphoma and 36 DLBCL cases outside the CNS.

Surveillance of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic requires tests to monitor antibody formation and prevalence. We detected SARS-CoV-2 antibodies using red cells coated by Kode technology with short peptides derived from the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (SP). Such modified red cells, called C19-kodecytes, can be used as reagent cells in any manual or automated column agglutination assay.

Background The relevance of sex and preimplant factors for clinical outcomes among patients with left ventricular assist devices intended for destination therapy is unclear. Methods and Results INTERMACS (Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support) data (2006-2017) from 6771 men and 1690 women with left ventricular assist devices as destination therapy were analyzed to evaluate the contribution of preimplant clinical, demographic, and clinically judged psychosocial characteristics to time until death, heart transplant, device explant due to recovery, or complication-related device replacement. Associations of sex with time until each competing outcome were evaluated using cumulative incidence functions and event-specific Cox proportional hazards models.

Extracranial malignant rhabdoid tumors (extracranial MRT) are rare, highly aggressive malignancies affecting mainly infants and children younger than 3 years. Common anatomic sites comprise the kidneys (RTK - rhabdoid tumor of kidney) and other soft tissues (eMRT - extracranial, extrarenal malignant rhabdoid tumor). The genetic origin of these diseases is linked to biallelic pathogenic variants in the genes , or rarely , encoding subunits of the SWI/SNF chromatin-remodeling complex.

Genetic Obesity in Children: Overview of Possible Diagnoses with a Focus on SH2B1 Deletion.

Horm Res Paediatr

June 2022

Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, University Medical Center Ulm, Ulm, Germany.

Introduction: Genetic obesity is rare and quite challenging for pediatricians in terms of early identification. Src-homology-2 (SH2) B adapter protein 1 (SH2B1) is an important component in the leptin-melanocortin pathway and is found to play an important role in leptin and insulin signaling and therefore in the pathogenesis of obesity and diabetes. Microdeletions in chromosome 16p11.

Article Synopsis
  • Successful pollination in animal-pollinated plants relies on the timing of flower availability and pollinator activity, which can vary throughout the day due to environmental changes.
  • Researchers studied the daily activity patterns of pollinators in high elevation meadows and forests in Southwest China, discovering that many pollinator groups exhibit bimodal activity, with peaks in the morning and afternoon.
  • The study found that all pollinator groups showed increased activity with rising solar radiation, suggesting that abiotic factors significantly influence their visitation patterns in different habitats.

Loss of nuclear SMARCB1 (INI1/hSNF5/BAF47) protein expression due to biallelic mutations of the SMARCB1 tumor suppressor gene is a hallmark of atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (ATRT), but the presence of cytoplasmic SMARCB1 protein in these tumors has not yet been described. In a series of 102 primary ATRT, distinct cytoplasmic SMARCB1 staining on immunohistochemistry was encountered in 19 cases (19%) and was highly over-represented in cases showing pathogenic sequence variants leading to truncation or mutation of the C-terminal part of SMARCB1 (15/19 vs. 4/83; Chi-square: 56.

The ability to assess food quality is crucial to all organisms. Fleshy fruits are a major source of nutrients to various animals, and unlike most food sources, have evolved to be attractive and to be consumed by animals to promote seed dispersal. It has recently been established that fruit scent-the bouquet of volatile chemicals emitted by ripe fruit-is an evolved communication system between plants and animals.

The sharing of the same food source among parents and offspring can be a driver of the evolution of family life and parental care. However, if all family members desire the same meal, competitive situations can arise, especially if resource depletion is likely. When food is shared for reproduction and the raising of offspring, parents have to decide whether they should invest in self-maintenance or in their offspring and it is not entirely clear how these two strategies are balanced.

Large B-cell lymphoma with IRF4 rearrangement, and Burkitt-like lymphoma with 11q aberration are two provisional lymphoma entities in the 2017 revision of the WHO classification of lymphoid neoplasms. Despite being more frequent in young patients, knowledge regarding their true incidence and clinical features in unselected cohorts of paediatric and adolescent patients is limited. We screened for both entities among paediatric patients (<18 years of age) in the German NHL-BFM (Non-Hodgkin lymphoma Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster) group.

Background High-sensitivity cardiac troponins T and I (hs- cTnT and hs- cTnI ) are established biomarkers for myocardial injury and used for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. However, whether repeat measurements improve prediction of recurrent cardiovascular disease ( CVD ) events in patients with stable coronary heart disease ( CHD ) after adjustment for several other novel biomarkers remains unclear. Methods and Results We measured both troponins in 873 coronary heart disease patients from the KAROLA (Langzeiterfolge der Kardiologischen Anschlussheilbehandlung) study about 9 weeks after their initial acute event (baseline) and after 12 months, followed them for 12 years, assessed a combined CVD end point, and adjusted for several risk factors.
