Trillions of various microorganisms inhabit the human intestine whilst having myriads of effects on the body. They participate in the metabolism of nutrients, support the work of the immune system, regulate operation of the nervous system, and produce vitamins, short-chain fatty acids, and a number of other compounds necessary for the host. An imbalance or disruption in the normal microbial community is called dysbacteriosis or dysbiosis.

The effects of alkali-metal ions (Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs) on the vibrational dynamics of the DNA ion-hydration shell were studied through classical molecular dynamics simulations. As a result, the vibrational spectra of the DNA-water-salt systems were calculated within the framework of two approaches, using dipole-dipole and velocity-velocity autocorrelation functions. We dissect the effect of the individual compartments of the DNA double helix (minor groove, major groove, and phosphate groups) on the behavior of the systems.

Background: Prophylaxis with a von Willebrand factor (VWF) concentrate is recommended in von Willebrand disease (VWD) patients with a history of frequent and severe bleeds. Despite nosebleeds being a frequent manifestation of VWD, few studies have investigated the efficacy of factor prophylaxis in preventing nosebleeds in patients with severe VWD.
Methods: This post-hoc analysis of a prospective, 12-month, phase 3 study assessed the efficacy of wilate in the prevention of nosebleeds in 33 patients aged ≥6 years with severe type 1, type 2 or type 3 VWD.

In this article, we provide an overview of hydrogen storage materials, taking our previous results as examples. Towards the end of the paper, we present a case study in order to highlight the effects of substitutional alloying, compositional additives, and nanostructuring on the hydrogen sorption properties of magnesium-based intermetallics. Specifically, partial substitution of Mg by Li and d-elements by p-elements leads to structural changes, inducing disorder and the formation of high-entropy alloys.

Millions of people were forced to flee Ukraine after Russia's invasion on February 24, 2022, one of the fastest displacements in decades. Citizens' response in EU countries (where most displaced Ukrainians arrived) has been considerably more positive than in past refugee crises. This study investigates several possible drivers of this difference.

Purpose: To explore the significance of changes in anterior chamber depth (ΔACD) and astigmatism between 4 and 8 weeks following uneventful phacoemulsification.
Patients And Methods: Anterior chamber depth (ACD, mm), autorefractometry and subjective refraction were monitored in pseudophakic eyes implanted with non-toric IOLs (group 1, SA60AT, n=36; group 2, SN60WF, n=34; group 3, ICBOO, n=16) and phakic control group (n=30, group 4a, for ACD and autorefractometry) over four weeks. Changes in subjective refractions were compared with repeatability in normal phakic eyes (n=30, group 4b).

Structure changes or transitions are common in growing networks (complex networks, graphs, etc.) and must be precisely determined. The introduced quantitative measure of the structural complexity of the network based on a procedure similar to the renormalization process allows one to reveal such changes.

Enhancing the aqueous solubility via amorphization of crystalline poor glass-forming drugs represents a challenge, particularly when drug dosing is high. In such scenarios, there is often a need for high polymer loadings, leading to an increase in the dosage form mass and less patient acceptability. This work investigated the role that polymer type and after-melt cooling rate had upon the amorphicity of solid dispersions (SDs) containing high levels of naproxen and three commonly used polymeric excipients: Eudragit® EPO, Kollidon® VA64, and Soluplus®.
