The effective implementation of the European Green Deal is based on closing cycles by means of reusing products and extending their durability, especially for steel products in the construction industry. The Life Cycle Assessment gives an opportunity to determine the potential impact caused on the environment by building structures and it is used mainly at the early design stage. At the same time, there are significant gaps when it comes to predicting properties of steel products at the last stage of the life cycle of existing buildings in the End of Life Stage (C1-C4) phases and especially D-Benefits and Loads Beyond the System Boundary.

Somatic copy number deletion of chromosome 22q in papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Eur Thyroid J

January 2025

S Chanock, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, Laboratory of Genetic Susceptibility, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, United States.

Deletion of the long q arm of chromosome 22 (22qDEL) is the most frequently identified recurrent somatic copy number alteration (SCNA) observed in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Since its role in PTC is not fully understood, we conducted a pooled analysis of genomic characteristics and clinical correlates in 1094 primary tumors from four published PTC genomic studies. The majority of PTC with 22qDEL exhibited arm-level loss of heterozygosity (86%); nearly all PTC with 22qDEL had losses in 22q12 and 13, which together constitute 70% of the q arm.

A popliteal artery injury in a 12-year-old female patient, injured in the war conflict in Ukraine, proved to be serious, requiring surgical treatment, despite seemingly poor symptoms and the absence of subjective difficulties. The presentation of arterial injury without acute limb ischemia was atypical. The clinical picture of the lower limb in the sense of "pulseless pink" based on an arterial lesion is not common, but its underestimation can have permanent consequences for the patient.

North Pontic crossroads: Mobility in Ukraine from the Bronze Age to the early modern period.

Sci Adv

January 2025

UCL Genetics Institute, Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment, University College London, London WC1E 6BT, UK.

The North Pontic region, which encompasses present-day Ukraine, was a crossroads of migration, connecting the vast Eurasian Steppe with Central Europe. We generated shotgun-sequenced genomic data for 91 individuals dating from around 7000 BCE to 1800 CE to study migration and mobility history in the region, with a particular focus on historically attested migrating groups during the Iron Age and the medieval period. We infer a high degree of temporal heterogeneity in ancestry, with fluctuating genetic affinities to different present-day Eurasian groups.

Metformin, a widely used antidiabetic medication, has emerged as a promising broad-spectrum antiviral agent due to its ability to modulate cellular pathways essential for viral replication. By activating AMPK, metformin depletes cellular energy reserves that viruses rely on, effectively limiting the replication of pathogens such as influenza, HIV, SARS-CoV-2, HBV, and HCV. Its role in inhibiting the mTOR pathway, crucial for viral protein synthesis and reactivation, is particularly significant in managing infections caused by HIV, CMV, and EBV.

The current research is devoted to integrating naturally renewable cardanol derivatives into one-component silyl-terminated-polyether-based prepolymer systems to improve climatic resistance and obtain materials with versatile mechanical properties that could be significant to various sectors of the economy. Various cardanol-type products are used in industries that require high climatic resistance, and thus combining cardanol with commercially available silyl-terminated polyether prepolymers would improve its material climatic resistance, maintaining its market and application value as well as improving material sustainability. The results obtained in this work show that depending on how the cardanol prepolymer Ultra Lite 513 is modified, it is possible to increase the elasticity (670%) or tensile strength (104%) of the material as well as significantly increase the climatic resistance of the material, thus improving the quality and sustainability of the adhesive compared to existing silyl-terminated-prepolymer-based adhesives on the market.
