Effects of magnesium sulphate on neostigmine-induced recovery from moderate neuromuscular blockade with rocuronium: a randomized controlled trial.

Magnes Res

June 2023

Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seongnam 13620, Korea, Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul 03080, Korea.

Magnesium enhances the effects of neuromuscular blocking agents. However, there is a paucity of evidence demonstrating possible effects of magnesium on neostigmine-induced recovery from neuromuscular blockade with rocuronium. This study compared the profiles of recovery from neuromuscular blockade between groups treated with magnesium (Group M) and placebo controls (Group C).

Association of HbA1c with functional outcome by ischemic stroke subtypes and age.

Front Neurol

September 2023

Division of Cardiovascular Disease Research, Department of Chronic Disease Convergence Research, Korea National Institute of Health, Cheongju-si, Republic of Korea.

Objectives: To determine whether high HbA1c levels are related to short-and long-term functional outcomes in patients with ischemic stroke (IS) and whether this association differs according to the IS subtype and the patient's age.

Methods: The data of 7,380 IS patients admitted to 16 hospitals or regional stroke centers in South-Korea, between May 2017 and December 2019, were obtained from the Clinical Research Collaboration for Stroke-Korea-National Institute of Health database and retrospectively analyzed. Among these patients, 4,598 were followed-up for one-year.

Background: Proximal thoracic curve (PTC) correction has been considered to prevent lateral shoulder imbalance in Lenke Type 2 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients; however, postoperative shoulder imbalance (PSI) commonly occurs despite these strategies with PTC correction. We investigated the hypothesis that PTC correction would not directly affect PSI in the majority of Lenke type 2 AIS cases. Furthermore, we investigated the risk factors for lateral PSI after corrective surgery.

Background And Aims: The authors investigated the impact of smoking and its cessation after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) on cardiovascular outcomes.

Methods: Using a nationwide database from the Korean National Health Insurance System, 74 471 patients undergoing PCI between 2009 and 2016 were classified as non-, ex-, or current smokers, depending on smoking status at the first health check-up within 1 year after PCI. The primary outcome was major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular event (MACCE), a composite of all-cause death, myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization, and stroke.

Background: Optimal antiplatelet strategy for patients with ischemic stroke who were already on single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT) remains to be elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different antiplatelet regimens on vascular and safety outcomes at 1 year after non-cardioembolic stroke in patients previously on SAPT.

Methods: We identified 9,284 patients with acute non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke that occurred on SAPT using linked data.

Background & Aims: It is unclear if there may be sex differences in response to nucleos(t)ide analogs including virologic response (VR), biochemical response (BR), complete response (CR), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence among hepatitis B patients. We compared nucleos(t)ide analog treatment outcomes by sex.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 3388 treatment-naïve adult hepatitis B patients (1250 female, 2138 male) from the Real-World Evidence from the Global Alliance for the Study of Hepatitis B Virus consortium who initiated therapy with either entecavir or tenofovir from 22 sites (Argentina, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and the United States).

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the relationship between urinary potassium excretion and cardiac injury in patients with chronic kidney disease, finding that higher urinary potassium excretion may lead to a reduced risk of cardiac injury.
  • Data from 1633 patients indicated that although serum potassium levels did not correlate with cardiac injury, an increase in the urinary potassium to creatinine ratio was linked to lower odds of cardiac injury.
  • The analysis suggests that serum potassium levels only play a minor and statistically insignificant role in the relationship between urinary potassium excretion and cardiac injury.
