Extensive Raman spectroscopy studies combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were performed to investigate structural and chemical changes in diamond layers deposited by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) upon post-growth treatment with hydrogen. The aim of this study is to characterize the changes in micro-structural properties of diamond layers with different grain sizes and different contents of sp carbon phase. Hydrogenation or oxidization of diamond layer surface is often performed to modify its properties; however, it can also strongly affect the surface structure.

In this work, thermally expanded vermiculite (TE-VMT) was surface modified and used as a filler for composites with a polylactide (PLA) matrix. Modification of vermiculite was realized by simultaneous ball milling with the presence of two PLA chain extenders, aromatic carbodiimide (KI), and 4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI). In addition to analyzing the particle size of the filler subjected to processing, the efficiency of mechanochemical modification was evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Human tRNA guanylyltransferase (HsThg1) catalyzes the 3'-5' addition of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) to the 5'-end (-1 position) of tRNA, producing mature tRNA In human cells, cytoplasmic and mitochondrial tRNA have adenine (A) or cytidine (C), respectively, opposite to G Little attention has been paid to the structural requirements of incoming GTP in 3'-5' nucleotidyl addition by HsThg1. In this study, we evaluated the incorporation efficiencies of various GTP analogs by HsThg1 and compared the reaction mechanism with that of Thg1 (CaThg1). HsThg1 incorporated GTP opposite A or C in the template most efficiently.

Motivation: Queueing theory can be effective in simulating biochemical reactions taking place in living cells, and the article paves a step toward development of a comprehensive model of cell metabolism. Such a model could help to accelerate and reduce costs for developing and testing investigational drugs reducing number of laboratory animals needed to evaluate drugs.
Results: The article presents a Krebs cycle model based on queueing theory.

Objective: The objective of this study was to define a new composite trait for Holstein dairy cows and evaluate the possibility of joint improvement in milk and fertility traits.
Methods: A data set consisting 35,882 fertility related records (days open [DO], calving interval [CI], and number of services per conception [NSC], and total milk yield in each lactation [TMY]) was collected from 1998 to 2016 in Polish Holstein-Friesian breed herds. In this study TMY, DO, CI, and lactation length of each cow was used to obtain composite milk and fertility traits (CMF).

Some aphid species are important agricultural pests, sometimes also found on plants growing in urban areas. In this work, we set out to identify the plant species, communities or habitats that are more attractive to aphids in order to limit their spread into new green areas. The aim of the study was to determine and compare plant communities and the assemblages of aphids associated with them in different urban park habitats.

Extrusion-based three-dimensional (3D) printing methods are preferred and emerging approaches for freely digital fabrication of ceramics due to ease of use, low investment, high utilization of materials, and good adaptability to multi-materials. However, systematic knowledge still lacks an explanation for what is their 3D printability. Moreover, some uncontrollable factors including extrudate shape retention and nonuniform drying inevitably limit their industrial applications.

Intestinal microbiota are a key factor in maintaining good health and production results in chickens. They play an important role in the stimulation of immune responses, as well as in metabolic processes and nutrient digestion. Bioactive substances such as prebiotics, probiotics, or a combination of the two (synbiotic) can effectively stimulate intestinal microbiota and therefore replace antibiotic growth promoters.

The automated milking system provides breeders with a large amount of automatically collected information about each cow in herd that cannot be easily obtained in non-robotised systems. This knowledge can be used in breeding programs improving somatic cell count (SCC) level. The objective of this study was to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations among test-day (TD) somatic cell score (SCS) and selected milking traits, such as daily milk yield (MY), milking frequency (MF), milking time (MT) and milking speed (MS), attachment time (AT) to single teat cups, electrical conductivity (EC) and milk temperature (MTEMP).

Immunobiotics are probiotics that promote intestinal health by modulating immune responses. Immunobiotics are recognized by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and activate cytokine gene expression. This study aimed to characterize cytokine gene expression in the chicken peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) stimulated with purified TLR ligands and live probiotics.

Lightweight materials are finding plentiful applications in various engineering sectors due to their high strength-to-weight ratios. Hole-making is an inevitable requirement for their structural applications, which is often marred by thermal damages of the drill causing unacceptable shortening of tool life. Efficient cooling of the tool is a prime requirement for enhancing the process viability.

Early prediction of lactation milk yield enables more efficient herd management. Therefore, this study attempted to predict lactation milk yield (LMY) in 524 Polish Holstein-Friesian cows, based on information recorded by the automatic milking system (AMS) in the periparturient period. The cows calved in 2016 and/or 2017 and were used in 3 herds equipped with milking robots.

Copper nitride nanowire arrays were synthesized by an ammonolysis reaction of copper oxide precursors grown on copper surfaces in an ammonia solution. The starting Cu films were deposited on a silicon substrate using two different methods: thermal evaporation (30 nm thickness) and electroplating (2 μm thickness). The grown CuO or CuO/Cu(OH) architectures were studied in regard to morphology and size, using electron microscopy methods (SEM, TEM).

Due to the planned limitations in the use of genetically modified soybean meal, the search for alternative sources of protein in animal nutrition is ongoing, which also supports the consumers' expectations of good quality products, such as eggs. The aim of the study was to assess and compare morphological traits of eggs, fatty acid composition in yolk lipids, and the content and activity of lysozyme in thick and thin albumen in eggs from hens fed a diet based on legume seeds as a substitute for soybean meal depending on the hens age. Analyses were carried out for 300 eggs on dates I-V (19-39 weeks age of hens), obtained from Rosa 1 hens managed in the semi-intensive system.

Background: Nesting in large aggregations provides several important advantages for colonially breeding birds. However, it also imposes certain costs, associated with facilitated pathogen transmission and social stress. The cost-benefit ratio is not similar for all the birds in a colony and it might be mediated by nest density.

Previous studies by our group have demonstrated that the calcium imbalance in rat hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) can induce endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and promote cell apoptosis. KN-62, an inhibitor of Calmodulin kinase II (CaMK II), can decrease the expression of CaMK II that plays a major role in regulating the steady state of intracellular Ca2+. Uridine triphosphate (UTP) plays a biological role in increasing indirectly the level of intracellular Ca2+.
