As a component of multimodal therapy in locally advanced head and neck cancer, induction chemotherapy represents a strategy to reduce tumor burden and target distant metastases prior to definitive treatment. Although the addition of taxanes to the cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil induction regimen (TPF) has greatly benefitted outcomes in comparison with PF alone, recent phase III trials have not shown a survival advantage for TPF induction followed by chemoradiotherapy vs. chemoradiotherapy alone.

Introduction: microRNAs (miRNAs) are 19 - 23 nucleotide long RNAs found in multiple organisms that regulate gene expression and have been shown to play important roles in tumorigenesis. In the context of lung cancer, numerous studies have shown that tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes that play crucial roles in lung tumor development and progression are targets of miRNA regulation. Manipulation of miRNA levels that modulate lung cancer cell survival and drug sensitivity can therefore provide novel therapeutic targets and agents.

NSCLC (non-small cell lung cancer) often exhibits resistance to paclitaxel treatment. Identifying the elements regulating paclitaxel response will advance efforts to overcome such resistance in NSCLC therapy. Using in vitro approaches, we demonstrated that over-expression of the microRNA miR-337-3p sensitizes NCI-H1155 cells to paclitaxel, and that miR-337-3p mimic has a general effect on paclitaxel response in NSCLC cell lines, which may provide a novel adjuvant strategy to paclitaxel in the treatment of lung cancer.

Objective: The purpose of this article is to discuss radiation dose during CT-guided interventions and to explain how radiologists can modify technical factors to minimize radiation doses. Scanner-displayed indexes of radiation exposure that are available during the procedure will be defined to increase awareness about CT radiation dose reduction during interventional procedures.
Conclusion: CT-guided fluoroscopic procedures are safe and effective methods of directed intervention; however, the increasing use of medical radiation is an important consideration.

The large conductance calcium- and voltage-activated potassium channel (BK channel) and its smooth muscle-specific β1 subunit regulate excitation–contraction coupling in many types of smooth muscle cells. However, the relative contribution of BK channels to control of M2- or M3-muscarinic acetylcholine receptor mediated airway smooth muscle contraction is poorly understood. Previously, we showed that knockout of the BK channel β1 subunit enhances cholinergic-evoked trachea contractions.

Colorectal self-expanding metal stents have been widely used as a bridge to surgery in patients with acute malignant colonic obstruction by allowing a single-stage operation, or as a definitive palliative procedure in patients with inoperable tumors. Colonic stents are placed under either fluoroscopic or combined endoscopic and fluoroscopic guidance, with similar technical-success and complication rates. Placement of colonic stents is a very safe procedure with a low procedure-related mortality rate, but serious complications can develop and reinterventions are not uncommon.

Purpose: To report our experience with the diagnosis and treatment of aortoiliac vascular injuries caused by misplaced orthopedic fixation screws.
Materials: Six patients (age range, 35-60 years; mean, 52 years) were diagnosed with seven arterial injuries related to misplacement of fixation screws. The location of the injuries were thoracic aorta (n = 4) and common iliac arteries (n = 3).

We showed earlier that 15 deoxy Delta(12,14) prostaglandin J2 (15d-PGJ2) inactivates Drp1 and induces mitochondrial fusion [1]. However, prolonged incubation of cells with 15d-PGJ2 resulted in remodeling of fused mitochondria into large swollen mitochondria with irregular cristae structure. While initial fusion of mitochondria by 15d-PGJ2 required the presence of both outer (Mfn1 and Mfn2) and inner (OPA1) mitochondrial membrane fusion proteins, later mitochondrial changes involved increased degradation of the fusion protein OPA1 and ubiquitination of newly synthesized OPA1 along with decreased expression of Mfn1 and Mfn2, which likely contributed to the loss of tubular rigidity, disorganization of cristae, and formation of large swollen degenerated dysfunctional mitochondria.

Previous research has suggested that individuals with constitutional hemizygosity of 18q have a higher risk of autistic-like behaviors. We sought to identify genomic factors located on chromosome 18 as well as other loci that correlate with autistic behaviors. Arachidonic acid derived endogenous electrophile 15d-PGJ2 has gained much attention in recent years due to its potent anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory actions mediated through thiol modification of cysteine residues in its target proteins. Here, we show that 15d-PGJ2 at 1 microM concentration converts normal mitochondria into large elongated and interconnected mitochondria through direct binding to mitochondrial fission protein Drp1 and partial inhibition of its GTPase activity. Mitochondrial elongation induced by 15d-PGJ2 is accompanied by increased assembly of Drp1 into large oligomeric complexes through plausible intermolecular interactions.

The purpose of this study was to determine the performance of two balloon-retention-type gastrostomy tubes when the balloons are inflated with two types of contrast materials at different concentrations. Two commonly used balloon-retention-type tubes (MIC and Tri-Funnel) were inflated to the manufacturer's recommended volumes (4 and 20 cm(3), respectively) with normal saline or normal saline plus different concentrations of contrast material. Five tubes of each brand were inflated with normal saline and 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% contrast material dilutions, using either nonionic hyperosmolar contrast, or nonionic iso-osmolar contrast.

Studies show that high Akt activity in breast carcinoma is associated with endocrine therapy resistance. Breast cancer cell lines expressing a constitutively active Akt are able to proliferate under reduced estrogen conditions, and are resistant to the growth inhibitory effects of tamoxifen. Understanding the targets of Akt signaling mediating tamoxifen resistance is of clinical significance.
