Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) function to control infectious agents as well as to propagate inflammatory response in a variety of disease conditions. DNA damage associated with chromatin decondensation and NACHT domain-leucine-rich repeat-and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation have emerged as crucial events in NET formation, but the link between the two processes is unknown. In this study, we demonstrate that poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1), a key DNA repair enzyme, regulates NET formation triggered by NLRP3 inflammasome activation in neutrophils.

Background: Cardiovascular comorbidities have been identified as a significant risk factor for adverse outcomes following surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate its prevalence and impact on postoperative outcomes, hospital metrics, and mortality in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Our hypothesis was that patients with cardiovascular comorbidities would have worse outcomes, greater postoperative complication rates, and increased mortality compared to patients without cardiovascular disease.

Introduction: Basic life support (BLS) is an emergency skill that includes performing appropriate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide and is rising in Nepal. After an OHCA event, a bystander starting CPR quickly has been shown to increase the survival rate.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBMP2 signaling plays a pivotal role in odontoblast differentiation and maturation during odontogenesis. Teeth lacking Bmp2 exhibit a morphology reminiscent of dentinogenesis imperfecta (DGI), associated with mutations in dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1) and dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) genes. Mechanisms by which BMP2 signaling influences expressions of DSPP and DMP1 and contributes to DGI remain elusive.

Objectives: Interactive scenario-based learning (SBL) cases were developed using the SoftChalk platform to deliver content about patients' barriers to accessing healthcare and patient management strategies connecting oral to systemic health. The interactive cases were designed to engage the digital-savvy learners, meet them where they are by leveling up, and seek their feedback to determine flipped (FC) or modified flipped classroom (MFC) content delivery approaches.
Methods: Health professions students completed interactive SBL cases (Phase-I) using either FC as assigning content outside of class time preparation or MFC as allocating time at the beginning of the class deliveries, and a 12-item post-completion survey.

Purpose: To our knowledge, no studies have examined the association of diet quality and plant-based diets (PBD) with inflammatory-related mortality in obesity. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the joint associations of Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015), plant-based dietary index (PDI), healthy PDI (hPDI), unhealthy PDI (uPDI), pro-vegetarian dietary index (PVD), and systemic inflammation with all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality risks by obesity status.
Methods: Participants from NHANES were included in cross-sectional (N = 27,915, cycle 1999-2010, 2015-2018) and longitudinal analysis (N = 11,939, cycle 1999-2008).

Background: The purpose of this randomized, controlled split-mouth study was to evaluate a videoscope as a visual adjunct to scaling and root planing when utilized in combination with minimally invasive surgery.
Methods: Twenty-five pairs (89 interproximal surfaces) of periodontally hopeless teeth planned for extraction were scaled and root planed with minimal surgical access using surgical loupes (control) or adjunctive use of a videoscope (test). Teeth were extracted with minimal trauma, stained with methylene blue, and photographed with a digital microscope for analysis.

Damage to the endotracheal tube (ETT) during oral and maxillofacial surgeries is a rare but serious intraoperative complication. Herein, we present a case of a partially damaged ETT that was repaired using Dermabond surgical adhesive (Ethicon, Sommerville, NJ, USA) during a Lefort osteotomy. Dermabond surgical adhesive can be a simple and viable tool to repair partially transected ETTs where ETT exchange carries a high risk of airway loss.

Background: The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a difference in dimensional change of a free soft tissue autograft (FSTA) with epithelium compared to without epithelium. The secondary aim is to determine the patient and professional evaluation of color match and graft texture between the two groups.
Methods: Patients with ≤2 mm keratinized tissue indicated for a FSTA were randomly assigned to control group (FSTA with epithelium) or test group (de-epithelialized FSTA).

Introduction: Primary elbow osteoarthritis affects approximately 2% of the population, and has been treated with arthroplasty. However, total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) implants currently have severe weight limitations and issues with longevity. In patients with unicompartmental arthritis, unicompartmental arthroplasty may be used instead of TEA.

Objectives: Radiology and medical imaging are important yet often an underrepresented facet of medical education. Notably, there is concern among radiologists that students do not receive enough radiology exposure and that they struggle to interpret image findings on entering residency. Therefore, this survey aims to identify how medical students perceive the radiology curriculum and to determine gaps in delivery.

Postoperative pancreatic fistula at the early stage can lead to auto-digestion, which may delay the recovery of the pancreaticojejunal (PJ) anastomosis. The efficacy and safety of an acetazolamide-eluting biodegradable tubular stent (AZ-BTS) for the prevention of self-digestion and intra-abdominal inflammatory diseases caused by pancreatic juice leakage after PJ anastomosis in a porcine model were investigated. The AZ-BTS was successfully fabricated using a multiple dip-coating process.

During the repeated cycles of damage and repair in many muscle disorders, including Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), the muscle stem cell (MuSC) pool becomes less efficient at responding to and repairing damage. The underlying mechanism of such stem cell dysfunction is not fully known. Here, we demonstrate that the distinct early telomere shortening of diseased MuSCs in both mice and young DMD patients is associated with aberrant NF-κB activation.

Objectives: The current study compared the impact of pretreatment with melatonin and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on the prevention of rat lung damage following intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (iIR).
Methods: Twenty-eight Wistar rats were subjected to intestinal ischemia induced by a 60 min occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery, followed by reperfusion for 120 min. Animals were divided into the following groups (n=7 per group): sham, only abdominal incision; SS+iIR, pretreated with saline solution and iIR; NAC+iIR, pretreated with NAC (20 mg/kg) and iIR; MEL+iIR, pretreated with melatonin (20 mg/kg) and iIR.
