Early life adversity has a profound impact on physical and mental health. Because the central nervous and immune systems are not fully mature at birth and continue to mature during the postnatal period, a bidirectional interaction between the central nervous system and the immune system has been hypothesized, with traumatic stressors during childhood being pivotal in priming individuals for later adult psychopathology. Similarly, the microbiome, which regulates both neurodevelopment and immune function, also matures during childhood, rendering this interaction between the brain and the immune system even more complex.

Background: The short-term efficacy and safety of the Y-incision technique of aortic annular enlargement (AAE) has been established. We aimed to determine how the short-term outcomes of the Y-incision technique compared to traditional AAE techniques.

Methods: From February 2011 to June 2022, 380 patients at the University of Michigan Hospital underwent aortic valve replacement (AVR) with AAE using either traditional annular enlargement techniques (Traditional group, n=270), including Nicks [63% (171/270)], Manouguian [34% (91/270)], and others [3% (8/270)], or the Y-incision technique (Y-incision group, n=110).

Background: Intra-abdominal injury (IAI) is the second leading cause of mortality in abused children. It is challenging to identify in young patients due to their limited verbal skills, delayed symptoms, less muscular abdominal wall, and limited bruising.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of children aged 0 to 12 months who were evaluated in the emergency department for suspected child abuse with a skeletal survey and urinalysis between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2017.

The purpose of this study was to examine current clinical supervision practices within primary care settings. We used a descriptive survey design, which blends quantitative and qualitative data, and examined the current state of clinical supervision practices and approaches in primary care and the type of training the behavioral health consultants received to provide supervision to pre-licensure level behavioral health trainees. Ninety-four participants completed the survey in 2022.

Purpose: Hepatic thermal ablation therapy can result in c-Met-mediated off-target stimulation of distal tumor growth. The purpose of this study was to determine if a similar effect on tumor metabolism could be detected in vivo with hyperpolarized C MRI.

Materials And Methods: In this prospective study, female Fisher rats (n = 28, 120-150 g) were implanted with R3230 rat breast adenocarcinoma cells and assigned to either: sham surgery, hepatic radiofrequency ablation (RFA), or hepatic RFA + adjuvant c-Met inhibition with PHA-665752 (RFA + PHA).

Healthy muscle relies on a complex and interdependent network that includes, but is not limited to, proteins, ion channels, and the production and utilization of ATP. Disruptions to the system can occur for a number of reasons (genetic mutations, toxins, systemic disease, inflammation), yet they clinically present with symptoms that are nonspecific and common to myopathies: weakness, muscle pain, cramping, hypotonia. This article uses a case-based format to review the clinical reasoning and diagnostic tools that guide the accurate diagnosis of myopathies.

Objective: Examine the concordance of perceived operative autonomy between attendings and resident trainees.

Design: Faculty and trainees rated trainee operative autonomy using the 4-level Zwisch scale over a variety of cases and training years. The respective ratings were then compared to explore the effects of experience, gender, case complexity, trainee, trainer, and other covariates to perceived autonomy.

Since the clinical syndrome of progressive gait disturbance, urinary incontinence, and dementia in the setting of occult hydrocephalus responsive to cerebrospinal fuid (CSF) shunting was first reported in 1965, the existence of a potentially reversible cause for a form of a dementia illness has generated extensive clinical research and numerous clinical trials. Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) continues to be a heavily debated clinical syndrome. This paper reviews guidelines and imaging findings most often associated with iNPH and the relationship of the neuroimaging findings to some of the theories for this complex syndrome.

Objective: To examine the safety and effectiveness of intranasal midazolam and fentanyl used in combination for laceration repair in the pediatric emergency department.

Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of a random sample of 546 children less than 18 years of age who received both intranasal midazolam and fentanyl for laceration repair in the pediatric emergency department at a large, urban children's hospital. Records were reviewed from April 1, 2012 to June 31, 2015.

Background: Responsibilities of Program Directors' (PDs) and Program Coordinators' (PCs) roles continue to evolve within Graduate Medical Education (GME).

Methods: In 2016, the authors conducted an anonymous electronic survey of Child Neurology and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities PDs (n = 76) and PCs (n = 68) to address workforce characteristics, challenges related to implementing Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements, and institutional support. Responses were characterized with descriptive statistics.
