The Great Salt Lake (Utah, USA) is reducing in size, which raises several ecological concerns, including the effect of an increasing area of dry playa exposed by the retreating lake. This study focuses solely on concerns about the toxicity of metals in the dust blowing off the playa. Although considerable efforts have been made to understand aeolian dust in urban areas along the Wasatch Front, located just east and south of the Great Salt Lake, there is still a need to consolidate existing research and to conduct a compositional analysis of the dust found in these urban areas.

Ethnicity does not change burn resuscitation and time to first excision.

Burns

December 2024

Parkland Health, 5200 Harry Hines Blvd, Dallas, TX 75235, USA. Electronic address:

Health and racial disparities can limit access to preventative, trauma, and chronic disease care but have not been addressed in burn resuscitation. Over- and under-resuscitation contribute to increased overall hospital costs, and morbidity and mortality rates. The primary objective of this study was to identify potential racial disparities that may exist during the initial fluid resuscitation after burn injury.

Introduction: Recent advances in the subclassification of small cell lung carcinomas (SCLCs) may help to overcome the unmet need for targeted therapies and improve survival. However, limited information is available on how the expression of the subtype markers changes during tumour progression. Our study aimed to compare the expression of these markers in primary and brain metastatic SCLCs.

DEK::AFF2 fusion nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (NKSCC) is an emerging entity in the sinonasal tract, temporal bone, and skull base. However, the clinical behavior of these tumors has not been well studied. Here, we report the largest cohort of DEK::AFF2 carcinomas to determine if morphology, mitotic rate, and/or Ki-67 IHC are associated with patient outcomes, including a comparison with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated and independent patients.

Introduction: Prior studies have evaluated the level of evidence behind treatment options listed in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, but no study has categorized the life cycle of regimens listed in the NCCN guidelines. We longitudinally assessed the life cycle for each regimen for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma. We track the date of first clinical data, the date of regimen addition to NCCN guidelines, the date phase 3 data (if performed) were reported, and the results of phase 3 trials.

Autophagy is an essential cellular recycling process that maintains protein and organelle homeostasis. ATG9A vesicle recruitment is a critical early step in autophagy to initiate autophagosome biogenesis. The mechanisms of ATG9A vesicle recruitment are best understood in the context of starvation-induced non-selective autophagy, whereas less is known about the signals driving ATG9A vesicle recruitment to autophagy initiation sites in the absence of nutrient stress.

Selective termination: a life-saving procedure for complicated monochorionic gestations.

J Perinat Med

December 2024

Fetal Care and Surgery Center (FCSC), Division of Fetal Medicine and Surgery, Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA.

Monochorionic twin pregnancies are a subset of twin pregnancies that face potential complications related to a shared circulation between the fetuses. These complications are related to anastomotic placental vessels connecting the cardiovascular systems of the two fetuses, which can result in significant sequela if one twin experiences intrauterine death. The sudden cardiovascular collapse in this scenario leads to a massive blood shift away from the healthy co-twin, significantly jeopardizing its life and long-term neurodevelopmental outcome.

Community engagement is increasingly considered a key component of intervention development, as it can leverage community members' knowledge, experiences, and insights to create a nuanced intervention which meets the needs, preferences, and realities of the population of interest. Community engagement exists along a spectrum from outreach to the community to partnership with community members and organizations, and all levels of community engagement can benefit from systematic documentation of community feedback and decision-making processes. This paper demonstrates how we utilized the "Framework for Reporting Adaptations and Modifications to Evidence-based Interventions" (FRAME; Wiltsey Stirman et al.

Pediatric hematology/oncology as a subspecialty has made major contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common malignancy in the pediatric population. This impressive progress has yielded complete response rates of 98%, median durations of complete continuous remissions of over 5 years, and long-term leukemia-free survival and probable cure in 80% to 85% of patients. Sixty-five years ago, such data could only be imagined as future goals.
