Effect of Sodium Fluoride on the endogenous MMP Activity of Dentin Matrices.

Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of incorporating increasing concentrations of sodium fluoride in incubation media, on the loss of dry mass and solubilization of collagen from demineralized dentin beams incubated for up to 7 days. The effect of fluoride on the inhibition of matrix-bound metalloproteinases (MMPs) was also measured.

Methods: Dentin beams were completely demineralized in 10% phosphoric acid.

Low-level laser therapy improves bone formation: stereology findings for osteoporosis in rat model.

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) benefits bone metabolism, but its use needs to be standardized. We evaluated the effects of LLLT on bone defects in calvaria of ovariectomized rats. Stereology was used to calculate tissue repair volume (V tr ), density of trabecular bone volume (Vv t ), total volume of newly formed trabecular bone (Vtot), and the area occupied by collagen fibers (A C ).

Accuracy of two cephalometric analyses in the treatment of patients with skeletal class III malocclusion.

The aim of the present study was to compare the treatment plan outlined from the diagnosis obtained by two different cephalometric analyses with the clinical decision made for surgical treatment of patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion. For this purpose, 82 skeletal Class III patients were evaluated, divided into three groups according to the surgical procedure performed for dentofacial deformity correction. Their preoperative cephalometric radiographs were submitted to McNamara and Steiner cephalometric analyses.

Is the masticatory function changed in patients with temporomandibular disorder?

Patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) often complain and have limitation in masticatory function, which can be affected by a complex interaction of factors. The aim of this study was analyze the masticatory function in patients with TMD using surface electromyography (EMG) and masticatory efficiency (ME). Twenty-seven patients with TMD and 25 considered control (n), aged between 18 and 60 years, paired by age and gender, were evaluated according to RDC/TMD.

Effects of coffee intake and intraperitoneal caffeine on bone repair process--a histologic and histometric study.

Studies have suggested that caffeine acts on bone promoting an increase of calcium excretion, inhibition of osteoblast proliferation and delay in tissue repair process, raising the risk of fractures, osteoporosis, periodontal disease and affecting the success of bone reconstructive procedures. The aim of this study was to analyze histomorphometrically the process of alveolar bone healing after tooth extraction in rats subjected to daily intake of boiled coffee or intraperitoneal administration of caffeine. Forty-five male rats were divided according to the treatment in Control group (C); Coffee group (CO) - treated with coffee since birth; and Caffeine (CAF) - intraperitoneal injection of aqueous solution of caffeine 1.

Clinical evaluation of residual tetrasodium pyrophosphate released from two different anticalculus flosses.

The aim of this study was to compare the residual content of tetrasodium pyrophosphate released by two different anticalculus dental flosses (Reach PP®--entangled polypropylene floss and Reach NT®--texturized nylon) in the oral cavity. Ten healthy individuals (aged between 18 and 30 years) were enrolled in this randomized crossover clinical investigation. Participants received instructions on daily dental flossing and the interventions were randomly performed in 2 different groups (NT or PP) of five individuals each according to the dental flosses.

Osteonecrosis related to once-yearly zoledronic acid treatment in an osteoporotic patient after dental implant.

This paper presents a case of osteonecrosis of the jaw related to zoledronic acid (5 mg) administered once yearly to treat osteoporosis. A 79-year-old woman who has been treated for osteoporosis for 5 years with 5 applications of zoledronic acid was referred for evaluation. The patient had been submitted to dental implant placement and there was no osseointegration.

Mini-implants: alternative for oral rehabilitation of a child with ectodermal dysplasia.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a rare congenital disease that affects several structures of ectodermal origin. The most commonly related oral characteristics are hypodontia, malformed teeth and underdeveloped alveolar ridges. New alternative treatments are needed due to the failure of the conventional prosthesis retention.

Assessment of microplastic toxicity to embryonic development of the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus (Echinodermata: Echinoidea).

Apart from the physiological impacts on marine organisms caused by ingesting microplastics, the toxicity caused by substances leaching from these particles into the environment requires investigation. To understand this potential risk, we evaluated the toxicity of virgin (raw) and beach-stranded plastic pellets to the development of embryos of Lytechinus variegatus, simulating transfers of chemical compounds to interstitial water and water column by assays of pellet-water interface and elutriate, respectively. Both assays showed that virgin pellets had toxic effects, increasing anomalous embryonic development by 58.

Learning HMMs for nucleotide sequences from amino acid alignments.

Profile hidden Markov models (profile HMMs) are known to efficiently predict whether an amino acid (AA) sequence belongs to a specific protein family. Profile HMMs can also be used to search for protein domains in genome sequences. In this case, HMMs are typically learned from AA sequences and then used to search on the six-frame translation of nucleotide (NT) sequences.

Toothache, associated factors, and its impact on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in preschool children.

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of toothache, associated factors and impact of this condition on the Child Oral Health Related Quality of Life (COHRQoL) in preschoolers. The study was carried out in Santa Maria, Brazil, during the National Children's Vaccination Day, and 534 children aged 0 to 5 years were included. Clinical variables included dental caries and dental trauma.

A comparison of the bleaching effectiveness of chlorine dioxide and hydrogen peroxide on dental composite.

This study was carried out to verify if composites could be bleached using chlorine dioxide as compared with hydrogen peroxide. 3M ESPE Filtek Z350 Universal Restorative discs were prepared (n=40), with dimensions 5 mm diameter x 2 mm thickness. The discs were divided into 4 groups of 10 discs each.

Analysis of endodontist posture utilizing cinemetry, surface electromyography and ergonomic checklists.

The postural risk factors for dentists include the ease of vision in the workplace, cold, vibration and mechanical pressure in tissues, incorrect posture, functional fixity, cognitive requirements and work-related organizational and psychosocial factors. The objective was to analyze the posture of endodontists at the workplace. Eighteen right-handed endodontists aged 25 to 60 years (34±3) participated in the study.

Mercury fractionation in dourada (Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii) of the Madeira River in Brazil using metalloproteomic strategies.

This paper presents the results of mercury fractionation in muscle samples of dourada (Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii) from the JIRAU Hydroelectric Power Plant in the Madeira River Basin in the Amazon region of Brazil. The proteome of the dourada muscle was separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D PAGE). The mercury present in the protein spots was determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) after acid mineralisation in an ultrasound bath.

Effect of platelet-rich plasma on the healing of mandibular defects treated with fresh frozen bone allograft: a radiographic study in dogs.

The purpose of this study was to radiographically analyze the effect of autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) on the healing of fresh frozen bone allograft (FFBA) placed in surgically created resection defects in mandibles of dogs. Bilateral resection defects measuring 1.5 cm × 1 cm were surgically created on the inferior border of the mandible in 10 adult male dogs.

In vitro microstructural analysis of dental implants subjected to insertion torque and pullout test.

The change in the implant microstructure during handling may reduce the potential of surface treatment on the osteoinduction and, therefore, on the osseointegration. The aim of this study was to evaluate by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) the effect of insertion torque and pullout test on the microstructure of dental implants with different shapes. Four shapes of implants (n=8) were selected: conical with surface treatment (COTS), cylindrical with surface treatment (CTS), cylindrical with double surface treatment (CTSD) and cylindrical with machined surface (CSU).

Development of intracanal formulation containing silver nanoparticles.

This study aimed to synthetize, characterize and evaluate the antimicrobial properties of silver nanoparticles to be used in the development of a root intracanal formulation. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were obtained by reduction of silver nitrate with sodium borohydride and characterized by UV-Visible spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The antimicrobial activity of nanoparticle formulation was evaluated by determinations of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) against different bacterial species by the microdilution method, according to recommendations of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI).

Influence of the method in root canal filling using active lateral compaction techniques.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, by stereomicroscopy and confocal laser microscopy, the influence of different lateral compaction methods for the obturation quality, as well as the time spent for the procedure. Thirty root canals of freshly extracted single-rooted human teeth were prepared with the ProTaper system up to F5 instrument and filled with gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer by the lateral compaction technique. The teeth were divided into 3 groups (n=10) in accordance with the method used for the lateral compaction, as follows: Manual, Mechanical and Ultrasonic.

Elevated micronucleus frequency in patients with type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia and periodontitis.

The over-production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can cause oxidative damage to a large number of molecules, including DNA, and has been associated with the pathogenesis of several disorders, such as diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidemia and periodontitis (PD). We hypothesise that the presence of these diseases could proportionally increase the DNA damage. The aim of this study was to assess the micronucleus frequency (MNF), as a biomarker for DNA damage, in individuals with type 2 DM, dyslipidemia and PD.

Mechanisms underlying the hypotensive and vasodilator effects of Ru(terpy)(bdq)NO](3+), a nitric oxide donor, differ between normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats.

The endothelium impairs the vasodilator effect of Ru(terpy)(bdq)NO](3+) (TERPY) in Wistar rat aortas. We hypothesized that endothelial dysfunction could modulate TERPY׳s effect in spontaneously hypertensive rats. The present study investigated the role of the endothelium in the hypotensive and vasodilator effects of TERPY in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Gene expression profiling in leiomyosarcomas and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas: SRC as a new diagnostic marker.

Background: Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma (UPS) and high-grade Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) are soft tissue tumors with an aggressive clinical behavior, frequently developing local recurrence and distant metastases. Despite several gene expression studies involving soft tissue sarcomas, the potential to identify molecular markers has been limited, mostly due to small sample size, in-group heterogeneity and absence of detailed clinical data.

Materials And Methods: Gene expression profiling was performed for 22 LMS and 22 UPS obtained from untreated patients.

Chediak-Higashi syndrome and premature exfoliation of primary teeth.

The Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is a rare hereditary fatal disease, if not treated. These changes are associated with various diseases and syndromes that mainly cause periodontal disease and thus the premature loss of teeth. This paper describes the monitoring of premature loss of primary teeth that began when the child was 5 years old.
