Soybeans are among the world's major crops responsible for food and biodiesel production, as well as a major source of isoflavones - a class of high value-added bioactive compounds. As estimated 460 million tonnes of soya residues (branches, leaves, roots, and pods) will be produced in the 2018/2019 harvest, and 20-40% of this waste must be removed from the field to ensure soil quality and minimize environmental impacts. This work investigated the potential occurrence and content of isoflavones in soya agricultural waste collected directly from the ground after mechanically harvesting.

Membranes that aid the guided bone regeneration (GBR) process have been the subject of studies of compatible biomaterials that contribute to this repair process. The present study compared different membranes used in critical-size defects of rat calvaria by assessing GBR as well as histological, histomorphometric, and immunohistochemical reactions. Forty-eight male albino Wistar rats were randomly allocated into four groups ( = 12 each), namely, C: membrane-free control group (only blood clot, negative control group); BG: porcine collagen membrane group (Bio-Gide®, positive control group); GD: bovine cortical membrane group (first experimental group); and GDF: thicker bovine cortical membrane group (second experimental group).

Background: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is characterized by the development of bone necrosis in the jaws of patients receiving antiresorptive and/or antiangiogenic medications. No scientific reports have been published yet on bevacizumab-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BeRONJ) when associated with dental implant placement and adjuvant ozone therapy.
Case Presentation: A 54-year-old female patient with a history of metastatic breast cancer and bevacizumab use presented with a dental infection.

Background: The World Health Organization estimates that 1% of the world population (71 million) is infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). In 2015, three direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), simeprevir (SMV), sofosbuvir (SOF) and daclatasvir (DCV) were included in the Brazilian protocol for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. Despite the fact that the use of these drugs is associated with higher treatment response rates and with lower incidence of side effects, studies have shown the association between the presence of viral resistance mutations and the failure of pharmacological treatment.

Purpose: To evaluate in vitro the effectiveness of eight different cleansers containing alkaline peroxide against yeast [Candida albicans (Ca) and Candida glabrata (Cg) ], Gram-negative bacteria [Escherichia coli (Ec) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) ], and Gram-positive bacteria [ Bacillus subtilis (Bs), Enterococcus faecalis (Ef), Staphylococcus aureus (Sa), and Streptococcus mutans (Sm) ].
Methods: Denture base acrylic resin specimens (Lucitone 550; 1264 denture base acrylic resin specimens) were obtained from a circular metal matrix (15 x 3 mm) and sterilized with microwave irradiation (650 W, 6 minutes). The specimens were contaminated with 10⁶ CFU/mL suspension of yeasts and 10⁸ CFU/mL suspensions of Gram-positive and -negative bacteria.

The objective of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of nanostructured silver vanadate decorated with silver nanoparticles (AgVO) on antimicrobial activity, hardness, roughness, and adhesion of a soft denture liner. The antimicrobial efficacy of the Trusoft (Boswoth) liner incorporated with different concentrations of AgVO against Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, and Staphyloccocus aureus (n = 5) was evaluated by the agar diffusion method. Roughness, hardness, and adhesion properties were also evaluated.

Inflammatory diseases, as periodontal disease (PD), has been associated with disturbance of lipid and glycemic metabolisms, as demonstrated by the increasing of PD patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and/or dyslipidemia comorbidities. We aimed to investigate the expression of inflammation and lipid metabolism genes, and correlations among clinical and biochemical characteristics in normoglycemic or T2D patients with dyslipidemia and PD, in comparison with healthy individuals. Five groups of 30 individuals each (150 patients) were formed based upon T2D, dyslipidemic and periodontal status.

Background: Heart rate variability (HRV) has proven to be a powerful non-invasive tool to investigate cardiac autonomic control and, seems to be influenced by nutritional status and exercise practice. However, the acute effects of fed or fasting states on HRV and blood pressure (BP) during low-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercise are currently unknown. Therefore, we investigated the baseline values and behavior of HRV, BP, and heart rate (HR) before and after low-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercise in fed and fasted states in healthy adults.

This study examined particularly relevant redox pathways such as glycolysis, pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), metHb reductase and nucleotide metabolism, in order to better address how sickle cells deal with redox metabolism disruption. We also investigated the generation of specific oxidative lesions, and the levels of an unexplored antioxidant that could act as a candidate biomarker for oxidative status in sickle cell anemia (SCA). We adopted rigorous exclusion criteria to obtain the studied groups, which were composed by 10 subjects without hemoglobinopathies and 10 SCA patients.

Cosmetics, personal care and biomedical products obtained by bio-based polymers and natural bioactive compounds are a new growing market. The ecological awareness is changing consumers' demands, causing consumers to look for more sustainable options, with a reduced environmental impact. The innovation of this work was to develop a natural polymer matrix (chitosan) entrapping antioxidant actives compounds such as annatto (Bixa Orellana L.

Recent studies suggested that genetics contribute to differences in dental fluorosis (DF) susceptibility among individuals having the same environmental exposure. This study evaluated if MMP2, MMP9 and MMP20 are expressed during enamel development and assessed the association between polymorphisms in these genes with DF. Mice susceptible and resistant to DF were used to evaluate if MMPs were candidate genes for DF.

Background: Chronic diseases such as chagasic megaesophagus (secondary to Chagas' disease) have been suggested as etiological factors for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma; however, the molecular mechanisms involved are poorly understood.
Objective: We analyzed hotspot gene mutations in a series of esophageal squamous cell carcinomas associated or not with chagasic megaesophagus, as well as, in chagasic megaesophagus biopsies. We also checked for correlations between the presence of mutations with patients' clinical and pathological features.

Mercury has the ability to bind to a variety of biomolecules, which can compromise its structure and functionality and thus promote its toxic effects. The aim of this study is to identify possible mercury biomarkers in muscle samples of Plagioscion squamosissimus (carnivorous fish) and Colossoma macropomum (omnivorous fish), from the Amazon region. The muscle proteome of fish species was separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE), and the total mercury concentrations in protein spots were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS).
