Chondroitin polymerizing factor (CHPF) is an important member of glycosyltransferases involved in the biosynthesis of chondroitin sulfate (CS). However, the relationship between CHPF and malignant melanoma (MM) is still unknown. In this study, it was demonstrated that CHPF was up-regulated in MM tissues compared with the adjacent normal skin tissues and its high expression was correlated with more advanced T stage.

The world has been challenged by SARS CoV-2, a new virus causing pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome, with common symptoms of COVID-19 in pediatric patients including both respiratory and GI symptoms. There is a lack of literature implicating COVID-19 in pancreatitis, yet viruses are generally understood to be a cause of pancreatitis in children. We present a case of a previously well 7-year-old girl, who presented to the emergency department with a chief complaint of abdominal pain and anorexia.

Introduction: The Toxicology Investigators Consortium (ToxIC) database, created in 2010 by the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT), compiles data recorded by medical toxicologists. In January 2017, the data field for transgender (and if transgender, male-to-female or female-to-male) was added to the ToxIC form. Little is known regarding trends in poisonings among transgender patients.

Introduction: Emergency physicians are trained to treat a variety of ailments in the emergency department (ED), some of which are emergent, while others are not. A common complaint seen in the ED is a sore throat. While most sore throats are easily diagnosed and treated, less common causes are often not considered in the differential diagnoses.

This is the case of a 92-year-old female who was hospitalized one month prior to admission for symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, requiring intravenous amiodarone. Following her previous admission, she was placed on one month of amiodarone 200 mg twice daily, with a one week transition to 200 mg daily. The patient subsequently developed progressive shortness of breath and dry cough over a period of several weeks.

Background: Fractalkine (CX3CL1; FKN) is a chemokine expressed by neurons that mediates communication between neurons and microglia. By regulating microglial activity, CX3CL1 can mitigate the damaging effects of chronic microglial inflammation within the brain, a state that plays a major role in aging and neurodegeneration. CX3CL1 is present in two forms, a full-length membrane-bound form and a soluble cleaved form (sFKN), generated by a disintegrin and metalloproteinase (ADAM) 10 or 17.

Introduction: Endotracheal intubation (ETI) is an essential component of the supportive care provided to the critically ill patient with pharmaceutical poisoning; however, specific nuances surrounding intubation including techniques and complications in the context of pharmaceutical poisoning have not been well elucidated.
Discussion: A search of the available literature on ETI in pharmaceutical-poisoned patients was undertaken using Medline, ERIC, Cochrane database, and PsycINFO using the following MeSH and keyword terms: ("toxicology" OR "poisons" OR "drug overdose" OR "poisoning") AND ("intubation, intratracheal" OR "intubation, endotracheal" OR "airway management" OR "respiration, artificial"). A hand-search was also performed when the literature in the above search required additional conceptual clarification, including using the "Similar Articles" feature of PubMed, along with reviewing articles' reference lists that discussed intubation in the context of a poisoning scenario.
Description The 2020 Match has recently concluded. While the results give us some information about where the medical field is headed, the decision by the NBME and FSMB to change USMLE Step 1 score reporting to only a pass/fail outcome will also impact how residency programs navigate the NRMP in the years ahead.

Ectopic thyroid tissue (ETT), though an uncommon finding, is prone to be clustered along the midline in the neck and rarely it shows up as a lateral neck mass. Whenever the ETT is discovered in unusual places, the possibility of malignancy is higher, and rarely a benign variant. We present a 71-year-old female with a past history of hypertension, hypercholesteremia, and thyroid nodules presented to the physician's office complaining of an unusual swelling in the right side of a neck.

Aging is associated with many pathophysiological changes that could lead to the onset of degenerative disease. Some of the physiological changes that occur with aging include increased inflammation and decreased stem cell proliferation, leading to decreased capacity for tissue regeneration and loss of function. In previous studies, we and others have found nutraceutical intervention to ameliorate some of the deleterious effects associated with aging.

Inhibition of the bromodomain containing protein 9 (BRD9) by small molecules is an attractive strategy to target mutated SWI/SNF chromatin-remodeling complexes in cancer. However, reported BRD9 inhibitors also inhibit the closely related bromodomain-containing protein 7 (BRD7), which has different biological functions. The structural basis for differential potency and selectivity of BRD9 inhibitors is largely unknown because of the lack of structural information on BRD7.

Background: Emergency medicine (EM) residents do not generally receive sex- and gender-specific education. There will be increasing attention to this gap as undergraduate medical education integrates it within their curriculum.
Methodology: Members of the Sex and Gender in Emergency Medicine (SGEM) Interest Group set out to develop a SGEM toolkit and pilot integrating developed components at multiple residency sites.

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a neoplasm of endothelium-derived cells that are associated with human herpesvirus 8 infection. In the setting of HIV, extensive disease typically necessitates highly active antiretroviral therapy in conjunction with chemotherapy. We report a patient who presented with gastrointestinal symptoms and was found to have KS presenting only as cratered gastric ulcers.

Intensive blood glucose regimens required for tight glycemic control in critically ill burn patients carry risk of hypoglycemia and are ultimately limited by the frequency of which serum glucose measurements can be feasibly monitored. Continuous inline glucose monitoring has the potential to significantly increase the frequency of serum glucose measurement. The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of a continuous glucose monitor with inline capability (Optiscanner) in the burn intensive care setting.

Rodents display "empathy" defined as perceived physical pain or psychological stress by cagemates when co-experiencing socially distinct traumatic events. The present study tested the hypothesis that empathy occurs in adult rats subjected to an experimental neurological disorder, by allowing co-experience of stroke with cagemates. Psychological stress was measured by general locomotor activity, Rat Grimace Scale (RGS), and plasma corticosterone.
