Covering: 1994 to 2024Historically, microbial natural product discovery has been predominantly guided by biological activity from crude microbial extracts with metabolite characterization proceeding one molecule at a time. Despite decades of bioactivity-guided isolations, genomic evidence now suggests that we have only accessed a small fraction of the total natural product potential from microorganisms and that the products of the vast majority of biosynthetic pathways remain to be identified. Here we describe recent advancements that have enabled high-throughput mass spectrometry and comparative metabolomics, which in turn facilitate high-throughput natural product discovery.

Determination of reference intervals of venous blood gas and acid-base parameters in clinically healthy awake cats.

Background: Venous blood gas and acid-base analysis is often performed in cats and requires appropriate reference intervals (RIs) for interpretation. The currently available RIs were created from small numbers of cats, while current guidelines suggest that a minimum number of 40 samples is required for the creation of an accurate/appropriate RI.

Key Findings: In 41 healthy awake cats, pH, PCO, PO, sodium, potassium, ionized calcium, chloride, glucose, and plasma lactate concentrations were measured, while bicarbonate, standardized base excess, and anion gap were calculated.

Background: Roof rats (Rattus rattus) are a substantial pest throughout citrus crops, yet little is known about efficacious, cost-effective strategies to manage this rodent. Therefore, we developed two integrated pest management (IPM) programs that incorporated elevated bait stations containing diphacinone-treated oats and trapping, and we compared those programs to a bait-station only approach to determine which strategies were most practical for the management of roof rats in citrus orchards.

Results: Bait applications substantially reduced rat activity within orchards.

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) employs diverse mechanisms to subvert host immune responses, contributing to its infection and pathogenicity. As an immune evasion strategy, KSHV encodes the Membrane-Associated RING-CH (MARCH)-family E3 ligases, K3, and K5, which target and remove several immune regulators from the cell surface. In this study, we investigate the impact of K3 and K5 on lymphotoxin receptor (LTβR) ligands, LTβ and LIGHT, which are type II transmembrane proteins and function as pivotal immune mediators during virus infection.

Large-scale restoration projects are an exciting and often untapped opportunity to use an experimental approach to inform ecosystem management and test ecological theory. In our $10M tidal marsh restoration project, we installed over 17,000 high marsh plants to increase cover and diversity, using these plantings in a large-scale experiment to test the benefits of clustering and soil amendments across a stress gradient. Clustered plantings have the potential to outperform widely spaced ones if plants alter conditions in ways that decrease stress for close neighbors.

Decedent positive identification via visual comparisons of frontal sinus radiographs is commonly used in the medicolegal field; however, only a handful of studies have empirically tested this method. This study aimed to test the accuracy of visual assessment in frontal sinus identifications across a large and experientially diverse participant sample. A Qualtrics survey presented participants with 25 pairs of cropped frontal sinus radiographs, asking them to determine if they matched and their confidence level.

Background: Dogs with hepatocutaneous syndrome (HCS) have marked plasma hypoaminoacidemia, but its occurrence in dogs with chronic liver diseases not associated with HCS (non-HCS CLD) is unknown.

Objectives: To determine if plasma hypoaminoacidemia occurs in dogs with non-HCS CLD, compare plasma amino acid (PAA) profiles between dogs with non-HCS CLD and HCS, and define a sensitive and specific PAA pattern for diagnosing HCS.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have proven to be highly effective in reducing obesity across species and ages, gaining unmet popularity in clinical treatments against obesity. Although extensive research efforts have been made to explore how the brain regulates body weight homeostasis including the effect brought up by GLP-1 and its synthetic analogs GLP-1RAs, the identity of neurons and neural pathways that are responsible for the observed anti-obesity effect of GLP-1RAs remain largely elusive. Excitingly, three recent high-profile studies presented compelling evidence that each argues for the importance of GLP-1Rs in the dorsomedial hypothalamus, hindbrain, or lateral septum, respectively, in mediating the anti-obesity effect of GLP-1RAs.
