Tropical deep reefs (~40-300 m) are diverse ecosystems that serve as habitats for diverse communities of reef-associated fishes. Deep-reef fish communities are taxonomically and ecologically distinct from those on shallow reefs, but like those on shallow reefs, they are home to a species-rich assemblage of small, cryptobenthic reef fishes, including many species from the family Gobiidae (gobies). Here we describe two new species of deep-reef gobies, and , that were collected using the submersible from rariphotic reefs off the island of Roatan (Honduras) in the Caribbean.

Telomere Length Associates With Symptom Severity After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Older Adults.

Neurotrauma Rep

May 2023

Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Informatics Department, School of Nursing, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA.

The objectives were to compare differences in telomere length (TL) among younger (21-54 years) and older adults (≥55) with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) to non-injured controls and to examine the association between TL and the severity of post-concussive symptoms over time. We performed a quantitative polymerase chain reaction to determine the TL (Kb/genome) of peripheral blood mononuclear cell samples (day 0, 3 months, and 6 months) from 31 subjects. The Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire was used to assess symptoms.

Nautiloids are a charismatic group of marine molluscs best known for their rich fossil record, but today they are restricted to a handful of species in the family Nautilidae from around the Coral Triangle. Recent genetic work has shown a disconnect between traditional species, originally defined on shell characters, but now with new findings from genetic structure of various populations. Here, three new species of from the Coral Sea and South Pacific region are formally named using observations of shell and soft anatomical data augmented by genetic information: (from American Samoa), (from Fiji), and (from Vanuatu).

Initially described in 1882, , the Yellowtail Reeffish, was redescribed in 1982 to account for an observed color morph that possesses a white tail instead of a yellow one, but morphological and geographic boundaries between the two color morphs were not well understood. Taking advantage of newly collected material from submersible studies of deep reefs and photographs from rebreather dives, this study sought to determine whether the white-tailed is actually a color morph of or a distinct species. Phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial genes cytochrome b and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I separated and the white-tailed into two reciprocally monophyletic clades.

Departments of Biophysics and Biochemistry, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, 5323 Harry Hines Blvd, Dallas, TX, 75390-9050, USA University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Dallas United States of America.

We obtained and analyzed whole genome data for more than 160 representatives of skipper butterflies (family Hesperiidae) from all known subfamilies, tribes and most distinctive genera. We found that two genera, Watson, 1893 and Karsch, 1895, which are sisters, are well-separated from all other major phylogenetic lineages and originate near the base of the Hesperiidae tree, prior to the origin of some subfamilies. Due to this ancient origin compared to other subfamilies, this group is described as Katreinae Grishin, DNA sequencing of primary type specimens reveals that Karsch, 1895 is not a female of Mabille, 1891, but instead a female of Holland, 1896.
