and other shiny green Halictinae have had various taxonomic issues and are often misidentified. One prevailing taxonomic issue is that (Fabricius) has two subspecies, that have long been recognized as morphologically distinct ( and (Smith), but the subspecies are inconsistently applied in the literature. Here, we review the of the Midwest and further address the species in the broader United States to resolve the outstanding taxonomic issues with the midwestern species.

Hydroptilidae is an extremely diverse family within Trichoptera, containing over 2,600 known species, that displays a wide array of ecological, morphological, and habitat diversity. However, exploration into the evolutionary history of microcaddisflies based on current phylogenetic methods is mostly lacking. The purpose of this study is to provide a proof-of-concept that the use of molecular data, particularly targeted enrichment data, and statistically supported methods of analysis can result in the construction of a stable phylogenetic framework for the microcaddisflies.

Task-unrelated thought (TUT), commonly referred to as mind wandering, is a mental state where a person's attention moves away from the task-at-hand. This state is extremely common, yet not much is known about how to measure it, especially during dyadic interactions. We thus built a model to detect when a person experiences TUTs while talking to another person through a computer-mediated conversation, using their keystroke patterns.

Prevention and Treatment of Pain in Children: Toward a Paradigm Shift.

Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

May 2016

Stanford Children's Health, Stanford, California, USA Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California, USA.

Rosenfeld et al in their recent article "Office Insertion of Tympanostomy Tubes without Anesthesia in Young Children" describe using a "papoose board for restraint" while performing a procedure resulting in severe pain for a significant number of children: a myringotomy and tube insertion. In 2016, it is inappropriate to perform elective painful procedures in children without treatment to avoid or minimize pain. We strongly disagree with the authors' conclusion "that office insertion of tubes in young children is a feasible alternative to general anesthesia for caregivers and clinicians who are comfortable with this choice.

Particle acceleration by a solar flare termination shock.

Science

December 2015

University of California, Berkeley, 7 Gauss Way, Berkeley, CA 94720, USA. University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, 116 Church Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455, USA.

Solar flares--the most powerful explosions in the solar system--are also efficient particle accelerators, capable of energizing a large number of charged particles to relativistic speeds. A termination shock is often invoked in the standard model of solar flares as a possible driver for particle acceleration, yet its existence and role have remained controversial. We present observations of a solar flare termination shock and trace its morphology and dynamics using high-cadence radio imaging spectroscopy.

Minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) for ciprofloxacin were significantly higher among 41 members of the H30 subclone within Escherichia coli sequence type 131 than among 48 other fluoroquinolone-resistant E. coli isolates. This MBC difference, which was not explained by ciprofloxacin MICs, gyrA, parC, and parE mutations, the presence of aac(6')-Ib-cr, or organic solvent tolerance (a surrogate for efflux pump activity), conceivably could have promoted the pandemic emergence of the H30 sequence type 131 subclone.

The primary aim of the current study was to examine self-criticism as a potential mechanism mediating the relation between mothers' own childhood maltreatment history and changes in subsequent maternal efficacy beliefs in a diverse sample of low-income mothers with and without major depressive disorder. Longitudinal data were drawn from a larger randomized clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy for depression among low-income mothers and their 12-month-old infant. Results indicated that higher levels of maltreatment in childhood led mothers to hold more self-critical judgments in adulthood.
