PLoS One

December 2024

Department of Pediatrics, Texas Children's Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, United States of America.

Objectives: Congenital cytomegalovirus disease (cCMV) can have significant sensory and neurodevelopmental sequelae throughout childhood. Many of these sequalae are consistent with special education eligibility, but the special education needs of affected children have not been systematically studied.

Methods: Retrospective chart reviews from two cohorts of cCMV children receiving care in a large tertiary care children's hospital were included in this study: a historical research cohort (N = 186, 41% symptomatic at birth) and a contemporary clinical cohort of cCMV patients (N = 112, 68% symptomatic at birth).

Introduction: ONWARDS 5 evaluated the effectiveness and safety of insulin icodec (icodec) titrated with a dosing guide app (icodec with app) versus once-daily insulin analogs in insulin-naive adults with type 2 diabetes. The insulin glargine U300 (glargine U300) stratum was too small to enable a robust post hoc efficacy comparison. Augmentation methodology was applied to increase the glargine U300 group size using real-world data (RWD), to facilitate efficacy comparisons of icodec with app versus glargine U300, and to demonstrate the potential of the augmentation methodology to strengthen underpowered treatment comparisons (AUGMENT study).

Non-spatial models of competition between floating aquatic vegetation (FAV) and submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) predict a stable state of pure SAV at low total available limiting nutrient level, , a stable state of only FAV for high , and alternative stable states for intermediate , as described by an S-shaped bifurcation curve. Spatial models that include physical heterogeneity of the waterbody show that the sharp transitions between these states become smooth. We examined the effects of heterogeneous initial conditions of the vegetation types.

Interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) such as spikes and sharp waves represent pathological electrophysiological activities occurring in epilepsy patients between seizures. IEDs occur preferentially during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and are associated with impaired memory and cognition. Despite growing interest, most studies involving IED detections rely on visual annotations or employ simple amplitude threshold approaches.

The Urgency Numeric Rating Scale: Psychometric Evaluation in Adults with Crohn's Disease.

Adv Ther

December 2024

Kennedy Institute, Translational Gastroenterology Unit and Biomedical Research Centre, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.

Introduction: Bowel urgency has recently been recognized as a Crohn's disease (CD) symptom that substantially impacts patients' quality of life. The Urgency NRS is a single-item patient-reported outcome measure assessing bowel urgency severity in the past 24 h (0-10 scale). We aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Urgency Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) in adults with moderately to severely active CD and to estimate thresholds for meaningful improvement and bowel urgency remission.

It has been an open question in deep learning if fault-tolerant computation is possible: can arbitrarily reliable computation be achieved using only unreliable neurons? In the grid cells of the mammalian cortex, analog error correction codes have been observed to protect states against neural spiking noise, but their role in information processing is unclear. Here, we use these biological error correction codes to develop a universal fault-tolerant neural network that achieves reliable computation if the faultiness of each neuron lies below a sharp threshold; remarkably, we find that noisy biological neurons fall below this threshold. The discovery of a phase transition from faulty to fault-tolerant neural computation suggests a mechanism for reliable computation in the cortex and opens a path towards understanding noisy analog systems relevant to artificial intelligence and neuromorphic computing.

Cross validation in stochastic analytic continuation.

Phys Rev E

November 2024

Department of Physics, Boston University, 590 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts 02215, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Stochastic analytic continuation (SAC) enhances the ability to relate quantum Monte Carlo data to measurable dynamic response functions by resolving spectral features like narrow peaks effectively.
  • Recent advancements in SAC have improved the accuracy of identifying sharp spectral features, but the challenge remains due to the complexity and ambiguity of the analytic continuation problem, where multiple outcomes may seem valid.
  • This study introduces a machine learning-based cross-validation technique to objectively select the most probable spectral representation from different parametrizations, showcasing its applicability to both quantum Monte Carlo and broader analytic continuation contexts.

Objective: As diagnoses covering dysfunctional feeding and eating in pediatrics, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) contain inherent areas of overlap in their diagnostic criteria. Areas of overlap include criteria regarding nutritional consequences associated with feeding/eating dysfunction and shared emphasis on possible psychosocial impairment associated with restricted food intake. Complicating the differential diagnosis process is a lack of guidance regarding when the two conditions occur independently, co-qualify, and/or transition into the other.

While the basolateral amygdala (BLA) is critical in the consolidation of emotional memories, mechanisms underlying memory consolidation in this region are not well understood. In the hippocampus, memory consolidation depends upon network signatures termed sharp wave ripples (SWR). These SWRs largely occur during states of awake rest or slow wave sleep and are inversely correlated with cholinergic tone.
