Interleukin 11 (IL-11), a member of the IL-6 family of cytokines, has roles in haematopoiesis, inflammation, bone metabolism, and craniofacial development. IL-11 also has pathological roles in chronic inflammatory diseases, fibrosis, and cancer. In this structural snapshot, we explore our recently published cryo-EM structure of the human IL-11 signalling complex to understand the molecular mechanisms of complex formation and disease-associated mutations.

A recombinant vaccine for rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2, a highly pathogenic virus, was granted emergency use authorization in the United States after the detection and spread of the virus starting in 2018. The goal of the current study was to assess pet rabbits (n = 29) through physical examination and routine clinical pathology testing using repeated assessments post-vaccination. In addition, seroconversion was also monitored after the initial vaccination and booster vaccination.

Rhizoctonia large patch ( AG2-2 LP) significantly reduces turfgrass quality, aesthetics, and playability. Synthetic fungicides are commonly used for managing this disease, but they present high costs, potential for fungicide resistance, and environmental concerns. We conducted in vitro assays to test the effectiveness of three biofungicides, seven synthetic fungicides, and ten combinations against .

In two laboratory trials, natural products, including freshly picked leaves from spearmint, rosemary, and tansy plants, a water extract from soybean plants, peels from a common cucumber, and 1% peppermint oil in hexane, were placed in a moist harborage preferred by Argentine ants, (Mayr), and the number of ants entering the harborage after two and four hours was counted. None of the recommended home remedies (tansy, cucumber, or soybean extract) deterred ants from an attractive, moist harborage in either trial, even when the quantity of these treatments was increased 4- to 10-fold. Freshly picked leaves from rosemary and spearmint plants deterred ants from harboring, and the 1% peppermint oil was the most deterrent of all treatments.

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) causes significant yield loss in tomato production in the southeastern United States and elsewhere. TYLCV is transmitted by the whitefly cryptic species in a persistent, circulative, and non-propagative manner. Unexpectedly, transovarial and sexual transmission of TYLCV has been reported for one strain from Israel.

Purpose: Problem-based learning (PBL) is an established learning method in medical education that uses small groups to address a "problem" in the form of a patient's medical condition. Compared to lectures, there is compelling evidence that PBL performs better in numerous areas including student basic knowledge and satisfaction. Inquiry case (IQ) learning is a modified form of PBL, which can be described as faster-paced and requires more student responsibility.

Nash equilibrium is a key concept in game theory fundamental for elucidating the equilibrium state of strategic interactions, with applications in diverse fields such as economics, political science, and biology. However, the Nash equilibrium may not always align with desired outcomes within the broader system. This article introduces a novel game engineering framework that tweaks strategic payoffs within a game to achieve a pre-defined desired Nash equilibrium while averting undesired ones.

Introduction: Colon cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States. With an increasing number of patients diagnosed at younger ages, the disease remains a significant burden. However, recent data on early onset patients admitted with colon cancer are still limited.

Outcomes for patients with myeloid blast phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CML-MBP) are dismal, and no preferred chemotherapy regimen has been identified. Recent studies have suggested a higher response rate with administration of timed-sequenced regimens (TSR) (purine analog, high-dose cytarabine, anthracycline) in high-risk acute myeloid leukemia patients. We retrospectively evaluated outcomes of newly diagnosed CML-MBP patients consecutively treated at our institution with a TSR or standard-dose cytarabine and an anthracycline ("7 + 3") combined with a tyrosine-kinase inhibitor (TKI) between 2011 and 2023.

Proteogenomics is a growing "multi-omics" research area that combines mass spectrometry-based proteomics and high-throughput nucleotide sequencing technologies. Proteogenomics has helped in genomic annotation for organisms whose complete genome sequences became available by using high-throughput DNA sequencing technologies. Apart from genome annotation, this multi-omics approach has also helped researchers confirm expression of variant proteins belonging to unique proteoforms that could have resulted from single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), insertion and deletions (Indels), splice isoforms, or other genome or transcriptome variations.

Child trauma, particularly within the context of the caregiving relationship, can have profound impacts on health, thus pediatric clinicians have a crucial role in recognizing and responding to trauma. Yet, trauma-informed care (TIC) is often described by its guiding principles rather than an approach to implementation. TIC requires the pediatric clinician to not only be familiar with the physiology of trauma, but actively promote resilience and employ strategies for primary prevention, secondary response and tertiary treatment of trauma.

Background And Objectives: Social isolation is commonly experienced by older people and is associated with adverse health outcomes. Little is known about the influence of social isolation on the risk of acute care utilization among people living with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. Our objective was to investigate the impact of social isolation on the risk of death, hospitalization, and emergency department (ED) use among people living with MCI or dementia who are followed in our Community Internal Medicine practice at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

Background And Objective: Carotid B-mode ultrasound (CBUS) imaging is often used to detect and assess atherosclerotic plaques. Doctors often need to segment plaques in the CBUS images to further examine them. Multiple studies have proposed two-dimensional CBUS plaque segmentation deep learning (DL)-based solutions, achieving promising results.
