Introduction: Dodecafluoropentane emulsion (DDFPe) administration has previously demonstrated improved gas exchange in single-organ perfusion models. This could translate to prevention of brain injury in cardiac arrest.
Methods: We induced cardiac arrest in 12 pigs, performing CPR after 5-minute downtime.

We have prepared trityl radicals with protons at the positions of the -COOH group in the phenyl rings and examined their EPR spectra, which show large - hyperfine couplings, and their dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) Zeeman field profiles . By assessing these polarizing agents for high-field and Overhauser effect DNP, we gain insight into the roles that these hyperfine couplings and other molecular properties play in the DNP performance of these radicals. Interestingly, we do not observe OE DNP in any of the three molecules we examined.

Introduction Artificial intelligence (AI) has long garnered significant interest in the medical field. Large language models (LLMs) have popularized the use of AI for the public through chatbots such as ChatGPT and have become an easily accessible and recognizable medical resource for medical students. Here, we investigate how medical students are currently utilizing LLM-based tools throughout medical education and examine medical student perception of these tools.

Recently, lifestyle medicine (LSM) application has shown feasibility for musculoskeletal pain patients with co-existing lifestyle-related chronic diseases. This study describes early results of a LSM program for musculoskeletal patients with goals to optimize health prior to orthopedic surgery. Fifty-four patients (age: 61 ± 11 years; 39 [72%] females) completed the program from 3/8/22-12/1/23.

Few efficacious therapies exist for the treatment of fibrotic diseases, such as skin scarring, liver cirrhosis and pulmonary fibrosis, which is related to our limited understanding of the fundamental causes and mechanisms of fibrosis. Mechanical forces from cell-matrix interactions, cell-cell contact, fluid flow and other physical stimuli may play a central role in the initiation and propagation of fibrosis. In this Review, we highlight the mechanotransduction mechanisms by which various sources of physical force drive fibrotic disease processes, with an emphasis on central pathways that may be therapeutically targeted to prevent and reverse fibrosis.

Background: Left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) is a key indicator of cardiac health. The gold-standard method of measuring LVEDP is invasive intra-cardiac catheterization. Echocardiography is used for non-invasive estimation of left ventricular (LV) filling pressures; however, correlation with invasive LVEDP is variable.

Laboratory-based surveillance for enteric pathogens causing diarrhea is foundational for monitoring foodborne diseases in the United States. However, diarrheal illnesses are not always confirmed by laboratory testing, so estimates of the true number of illnesses must adjust for underdiagnosis, including underdiagnosis due to ill persons not seeking medical care or submitting a stool sample for laboratory testing. We assessed these factors among persons with an acute diarrheal illness who responded to the most recent Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) Population Survey (2018-2019).

Extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) is a major contributor to treatment resistance and poor outcome for patients with cancer. Here we examine the diversity of ecDNA elements across cancer, revealing the associated tissue, genetic and mutational contexts. By analysing data from 14,778 patients with 39 tumour types from the 100,000 Genomes Project, we demonstrate that 17.

The live attenuated measles vaccine is extremely effective in preventing measles and induces mucosal immunity in the respiratory tract, however the mechanism is not known. We show that live attenuated measles virus (LAMV) RNA is frequently detected in the respiratory tract 7-21 days after subcutaneous measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination in healthy children (n = 5/20) and macaques (n = 6/8). Replicating LAMV was isolated from the lungs of 2 macaques, with no evidence of transmission to unvaccinated individuals.

Introduction: Endoscopy, standard-of-care for monitoring eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), assesses mucosal inflammation. The Esophageal String Test (EST), a minimally invasive swallowed capsule and immunoassays, quantifies EoE inflammation. We determined whether the EST/EoEScore can monitor disease in patients undergoing treatment.
