Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), is a fatal systemic hyperinflammatory syndrome. HLH may be due to immunosuppression, infections, cancer, or autoimmune diseases with fever and cytopenia. HLH which occurs in adult-onset Stills disease (AOSD) is called secondary HLH, also known as macrophage activation syndrome (MAS).

Mild steel provides strength to various building and industrial materials but it is badly affected by corrosion. In the present study, we investigate the efficacy of , a plant-based green corrosion inhibitor to minimize mild steel corrosion in a 1 M HSO solution. Weight loss, surface coverage, inhibition efficiency, and corrosion rate measurements were evaluated for various inhibitor concentrations and time intervals.

All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLBs) are the next advancement in battery technology which is expected to power the next generation of electronics, particularly electric vehicles due to their high energy density and superior safety. ASSLBs require solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity to serve as a Li-ion battery, driving extensive research efforts to enhance the ionic conductivity of the existing solid electrolytes. Keeping this in view, the B-site of LiLaTiO (LLTO) solid electrolyte has been partially substituted with Ga and novel Ga-doped LLTO (Li LaTi Ga O) solid-electrolytes are fabricated using the solid-state reaction method, followed by sintering at 1100 °C for 2 h.

Background: Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. We interviewed Tobacco Cessation Champions, multi-sector decision makers, across the state of Michigan to assess and identify barriers and facilitators of smoking cessation and the current smoking cessation landscape.
Methods: Twenty Tobacco Cessation Champion interviews ( = 20) were completed with multi-sector decision makers to assess implementation barriers and facilitators from May 2022 to September 2023.

Survival is poor for patients with metastatic cancer, and it is vital to examine new biomarkers that can improve patient prognostication and identify those who would benefit from more aggressive therapy. In metastatic prostate cancer, 2 new assays have become available: one that quantifies the number of cancer cells circulating in the peripheral blood, and the other a marker of the aggressiveness of the disease. It is critical to determine the magnitude of the effect of these biomarkers on the discrimination of a model-based risk score.

The aim of dynamic prediction is to provide individualized risk predictions over time, which are updated as new data become available. In pursuit of constructing a dynamic prediction model for a progressive eye disorder, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), we propose a time-dependent Cox survival neural network (tdCoxSNN) to predict its progression using longitudinal fundus images. tdCoxSNN builds upon the time-dependent Cox model by utilizing a neural network to capture the nonlinear effect of time-dependent covariates on the survival outcome.

Introduction: Given the significant interindividual variable responses to interventions for obesity, the early identification of factors associated with a differential in weight loss would benefit real-world approaches in clinical practice.
Objective: This study evaluated the factors associated with individual variability in response to enrolling in a weight management program integrated into an academic-based primary care practice.
Methods: Data were retrospectively collected and analyzed for patients referred to a primary care-based weight management practice between 2012 and 2020.

This article evaluated different production strategies, characteristics, and applications of biochar for ameliorating soil fertility and microbial diversity. The biochar production techniques are evolving, indicating that newer methods (including hydrothermal and retort carbonization) operate with minimum temperatures, yet resulting in high yields with significant improvements in different properties, including heating value, oxygen functionality, and carbon content, compared to the traditional methods. It has been found that the temperature, feedstock type, and moisture content play critical roles in the fabrication process.

Novel sustainable agricultural strategies that enhance soil nutrients and human nutrition are crucial for meeting global food production needs. Here, we evaluate the potential of "glacial flour," a naturally crushed rock produced by glaciers known to be rich in nutrients (P, K, and micronutrients) needed for plant growth. Our proof-of-concept study, investigated soybean ( var.

In this paper we contribute to a long history of research studying interactions between energy systems, international energy trade, and macroeconomic activity. We develop and employ methods to quantify transmission pathways for energy markets to affect the macroeconomy and CO emissions. We track the long-term consequences of a hypothetical permanent disruption to global energy markets, cession of Russian fossil fuel exports, for energy markets, regional and global economic activity (gross domestic product [GDP]), labor and capital markets, and CO emissions against two dramatically different reference scenarios.

While various methods are employed to ensure the virus safety of finished products, virus filtration (VF) stands out as the preferred method for virus removal and purification of a wide variety of products owing to its capability of separating product molecules with more than 90% recovery and no change in molecule characteristics. The modeling of the virus removal process for VF membranes is based on the principles of microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF), but with modifications for the much narrower separation difference, which is less than 2-fold for the separation of product molecules and virus particles. In this review, we introduce the materials and application of VF highlighting the unique characteristics properties of VF membranes through the steps of invention and subsequent development.

Remote sighted assistance (RSA) has emerged as a conversational assistive service, where remote sighted workers, ., agents, provide real-time assistance to blind users via video-chat-like communication. Prior work identified several challenges for the agents to provide navigational assistance to users and proposed computer vision-mediated RSA service to address those challenges.

Background: Ophthalmology has historically been a male-dominated specialty. Despite there being a higher proportion of females in Canadian medical schools since the early 2000s, it is unknown if trends in female applicants and those accepted to ophthalmology have followed suit. This study aims to evaluate trends in gender representation of ophthalmology applicants to Canadian residency programs from 1998 to 2020 and to compare those trends to other surgical specialties.

Background: Cognitive integration occurs when trainees make conceptual connections between relevant knowledges and is known to improve learning. While several experimental studies have demonstrated how text and audio-visual instruction can be designed to enhance cognitive integration, clinical skills training in real-world contexts may require alternative educational strategies. Introducing three-dimensional (3D) printed models during clinical skills instruction may offer unique learning opportunities to support cognitive integration.

Physical activity (PA) has a wide range of health benefits. Children with high levels of social support are more likely to achieve adequate levels of PA. The purposes of this pilot study were to examine the impact of an after-school intervention on perceived peer and parental support among adolescent girls and to identify correlates of support to explore in future studies to increase PA.

Voriconazole, a triazole antifungal, has proven effective against invasive fungal infections, and is often selected due to its enhanced antifungal spectrum coverage. Despite its general tolerability, voriconazole usage is associated with drug-induced periostitis, which presents with diffuse bone pain. This case report details a 65-year-old male on chronic immunosuppressive and antimicrobial therapy following heart transplant who developed hand pain.

Purpose: Gap-balanced total knee arthroplasty (TKA) technique relies on initial ligament evaluation, particularly in patient-specific implantation using computer-assisted technologies. This cadaveric study aimed to compare the reproducibility and reliability of medial and lateral gap measurements between manual stress testing and dynamic ligament balancer.
Methods: Initial gap acquisitions were assessed from eight cadaveric knees (four specimens) during the same navigated TKA procedure by five differently skilled surgeons (three seniors and two juniors).

The relative performance of rhizobial strains could depend on their resource allocation, environmental conditions, and host genotype. Here, we used a high-throughput shoot phenotyping to investigate the effects of Mesorhizobium strain on the growth dynamics, nodulation and bacteroid traits with four chickpea (Cicer arietinum) varieties grown under different water regimes in an experiment including four nitrogen sources (two Mesorhizobium strains, and two uninoculated controls: nitrogen fertilised and unfertilised) under well-watered and drought conditions. We asked three questions.
