The reduced size of specimens results in different material behavior at the microscale, mesoscale, and macroscale, in comparison to standard-sized specimens, which is referred to as the "specimen size effect." Although analytical models have been proposed to correlate the properties of sub-sized specimens to standard-sized specimens, these models lack broad applicability across different materials and testing conditions.

Homo Sapiens Chromosomal Location Ontology: A Framework for Genomic Data in Biomedical Knowledge Graphs.

The Homo sapiens Chromosomal Location Ontology (HSCLO) is designed to facilitate the integration of human genomic features into biomedical knowledge graphs from releases GRCh37 and GRCh38 at multiple resolutions. HSCLO comprises two distinct versions, HSCLO37 and HSCLO38, each tailored to its respective human genome release. This ontology supports the efficient integration and analysis of human genomic data across scales ranging from entire chromosomes to individual base pairs, thereby enhancing data retrieval and interoperability within large-scale biomedical datasets.

BOston Neonatal Brain Injury Data for Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (BONBID-HIE): I. MRI and Lesion Labeling.

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a brain injury that occurs in 1 ~ 5/1000 term neonates. Accurate identification and segmentation of HIE-related lesions in neonatal brain magnetic resonance images (MRIs) is the first step toward identifying high-risk patients, understanding neurological symptoms, evaluating treatment effects, and predicting outcomes. We release the first public dataset containing neonatal brain diffusion MRI and expert annotation of lesions from 133 patients diagnosed with HIE.

The emergence of the Omicron lineage represented a major genetic drift in SARS-CoV-2 evolution. This was associated with phenotypic changes including evasion of pre-existing immunity and decreased disease severity. Continuous evolution within the Omicron lineage raised concerns of potential increased transmissibility and/or disease severity.

Plasmodium, the causative agents of malaria, are obtained by mosquitoes from an infected human. Following Plasmodium acquisition by Anopheles gambiae, mosquito gamma-interferon-inducible lysosomal thiol reductase (mosGILT) plays a critical role in its subsequent sporogony in the mosquito. A critical location for this development is the midgut, a tissue we show expresses mosGILT.

CRISPR-Hybrid: A CRISPR-Mediated Intracellular Directed Evolution Platform for RNA Aptamers.

Recent advances in gene editing and precise regulation of gene expression based on CRISPR technologies have provided powerful tools for the understanding and manipulation of gene functions. Fusing RNA aptamers to the sgRNA of CRISPR can recruit cognate RNA-binding protein (RBP) effectors to target genomic sites, and the expression of sgRNA containing different RNA aptamers permit simultaneous multiplexed and multifunctional gene regulations. Here, we report an intracellular directed evolution platform for RNA aptamers against intracellularly expressed RBPs.

Here, we present the North American Repository for Archaeological Isotopes (NARIA), the largest open-access compilation of previously reported isotopic measurements (n = 28,374) from bioarchaeological samples in North America (i.e., Canada, Greenland, Mexico, and the United States of America) covering a time-frame of more than 12,000 years.

Decision-making in women who considered planned oocyte cryopreservation: decision satisfaction or regret?

Research Question: Among women who considered planned oocyte cryopreservation, does decision regret differ between those who pursued planned oocyte cryopreservation and those who did not?

Design: A survey was e-mailed to all women who presented for an initial consultation for planned oocyte cryopreservation between January 2016 and December 2021 using a secure REDCap platform. The survey comprised questions on demographics, reproductive planning and the validated Decision Regret Scale (DRS). Univariable and multivariable models were fitted to compare decision regret in the group who had proceeded with planned oocyte cryopreservation with the group who had not.

A comprehensive life cycle assessment was conducted to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of polyethylene (PE) packaging and its alternatives, including paper, glass, aluminum, and steel in the United States. The assessment focuses on five major packaging applications: collation shrink films, stretch films for pallet wraps, heavy-duty sacks, non-food bottles, and flexible food pouches. The study compares PE and the alternative packaging materials based on the following environmental impact categories: global warming potential (GWP), fossil energy use, mineral resource use, and water scarcity.

Methods: Twelve deliberate ultrasound-guided intraneural injections were performed at the ventral rami of the brachial plexus nerve roots at their exits from the neuroforamina in six fresh, unembalmed, cryopreserved human cadavers. A 22-G, 30-degree bevel echogenic regional anaesthesia needle was used.

We describe substances identified in postmortem toxicology screening and designated as cause of death (COD) for overdose decedents in Maryland, including specific combinations of substances designated as COD.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of N=5442 adult overdose decedents (ie, manner of death unintentional or undetermined) in Maryland between January 2020 and December 2021.
