Erlotinib-induced Perioral Lesions Resembling Scleroderma.

Erlotinib, an epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI), is currently used in the therapy of several solid malignancies. This agent has been associated with several dermatological side-effects, the most common being papulo-pustular acneiform rash. Herein we describe a unique skin effect in a patient treated with erlotinib for non-small cell lung cancer.

Consensus on Symptom Selection for Endometriosis Questionnaires: A Modified e-Delphi Study.

Objective: To build consensus on most important symptoms and related consequences for use in questionnaires to characterise individuals with suspected and confirmed endometriosis in the general population.

Design: A questionnaire of 107 symptoms and related consequences of endometriosis was collaboratively developed by patients, medical doctors and researchers and further assessed in a two-round e-Delphi study. Participants assessed the relevance of the symptoms, and a priori it was decided that 70% was the threshold for inclusion of a symptom.

IgE and cardiac disease.

IgE acts primarily via the high affinity IgE receptor (FcεRI) and is central to immediate hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylaxis). However, IgE is also important in the development of chronic hypersensitivity reactions (allergy). In the cardiovascular system, numerous clinical studies have investigated serum IgE levels, mainly in the context of myocardial infarction, and have established a clear association between IgE and ischemic cardiac events.

Some STS scholars argue that the solution is to move to a system of 'virtual diversity' where scientists are responsible for translating public concerns into their work. This commentary argues that this containment approach will have the opposite effect.

Characterization of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist exposures reported to a single United States poison center.

Introduction: Glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists have gained attention in recent years due to their efficacy in managing type II diabetes mellitus and their emerging role in weight management. The purpose of this study was to characterize glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist exposures reported to a single United States regional poison center over nine years, including causes of exposure, associated clinical effects, and potential areas for improving patient education and safety.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed all poison center calls involving glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists submitted to a single United States regional poison center from 14 January 2014 to 1 May 2023.

α-Synuclein interaction with POPC/POPS vesicles.

We have investigated the adsorption of the amyloid-forming protein α-Synuclein (αSyn) onto small unilamellar vesicles composed of a mixture of zwitterionic POPC and anionic POPS lipids. αSyn monomers adsorb onto the anionic lipid vesicles where they adopt an α-helical secondary structure. The degree of adsorption depends on the fraction of anionic lipid in the mixed lipid membrane, but one needs to consider the electrostatic shift of the serine p with increasing fraction of POPS.

An electrospray-active N-heterocyclic carbene ligand for real-time analysis of organometallic reactions.

A charge-tagged N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) has been synthesized and its utility in allowing the dynamic behaviour of metal complexes to be monitored in real time using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry demonstrated. This compound was used to prepare different metal-NHC complexes, and the kinetic behaviour of complex formation and ligand exchange was monitored in real time through the use of pressurized sample infusion electrospray mass spectrometry (PSI-ESI-MS).

We investigated if selected polymorphisms in DNA repair genes modify the association between exposure to particulate matter ≤ 10 micron in diameter (PM) and breast cancer (BCa) risk. We included 150,929 postmenopausal women (5,969 with BCa) from UK Biobank, a population-based prospective cohort. Cancer diagnoses were ascertained through the linkage to the UK National Health Service Central Registers.

Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is a lethal endocrine malignancy. It has been shown that tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) contribute to the aggressiveness of ATC. Ma04g15900 protein (termed MaGA20ox2f in this article) is the closest homolog to the Rice SD1 (encoded by 'green revolution gene', ) in the banana genome. 2024 HRS perspective on advancing workflows for CIED remote monitoring.

Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) generate substantial data, often stored in image or PDF formats. Remote monitoring, now an integral component of patient care, places considerable administrative burdens on clinicians and staff, in large part due to the challenge of integrating these data seamlessly into electronic health records. Since 2006, the Heart Rhythm Society, in collaboration with the CIED industry, has led an initiative to establish a unified standard nomenclature.

Prevalence and characteristics of group standardized letters of evaluation in emergency medicine: A cross-sectional observational study.

Background: The standardized letter of evaluation (SLOE) for emergency medicine (EM) is a well-established tool for residency selection. While previous work characterizes the utility and outcomes related to SLOE use, less is known about SLOE authorship patterns and trends.

Objective: The objective was to measure the prevalence of group SLOEs in EM over time, characterize the role groups represented in group SLOEs, and compare the rating practices of groups of authors versus single authors.

Scutellarein Inhibits Osteosarcoma Growth by Targeting the TLR4/TRAF6/NF-κB Pathway.

Purpose: Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common malignant tumor associated with poor patient outcomes and a limited availability of therapeutic agents. Scutellarein (SCU) is a monomeric flavone bioactive compound with potent anti-cancer activity. However, the effects and mechanisms of SCU on the growth of OS remain unknown.

Selective diet induced nutritional optic neuropathy in developmentally normal children.

Purpose: Nutritional deficiencies in developed countries are a rare but potentially intervenable cause of optic neuropathy in pediatric populations. To date, much of the literature on nutritional optic neuropathy has focused on children with developmental delay, however, a growing body of evidence supports other underreported risk factors.

Observations: We describe three pediatric patients with normal neurodevelopment, who presented with decreased vision and were subsequently found to have optic neuropathy attributed to vitamin deficiencies, predominantly vitamin B12.

Congenital conjunctival cyst detected by prenatal ultrasound.

Purpose: The purpose of this manuscript is to report a rare case of an orbital cyst detected intrauterine with sonography.

Observation: A 23-year-old female presented for routine prenatal monitoring when an orbital cyst was detected with a transabdominal ultrasound. Uncomplicated cesarean section was performed at 38 weeks gestation with proptosis of the left globe being noted on ophthalmic examination of the newborn.

Brainstem infarct from cervical vertebral artery dissection presenting as a transient Parinaud syndrome.

Purpose: To report a case of transient diplopia and upgaze paresis in the setting of acute dorsal midbrain infarcts from a cervical vertebral artery dissection in an otherwise healthy man.

Observations: A 33-year old man presented to the ophthalmology urgent clinic with a 1 h history of blurred and double vision, asthenopia, and a mild focal left posterior headache. Ocular motility examination revealed a profound upgaze palsy and convergence-retraction horizontal jerk nystagmus in attempted upgaze that gradually improved over the course of 1 h.
