Objectives: Safe Sleep Community Baby Showers (CBS) provide group education to reduce risk factors of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID). Based on CBS success, Safe Sleep Crib Clinics were developed to provide individual education. This study assessed Crib Clinic outcomes and differences in Crib Clinics compared to CBSs.

Leveraging human centered design to enhance clinician communication during pregnancy care: Overcoming language barriers with Spanish-speaking patients.

Background: Engaging patients in quality improvement and innovation projects is increasingly important, yet challenges persist with involving patients who speak languages other than English. This article presents design activities our team used to engage Spanish-speaking patients and cultural brokers.

Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis - A Case Report and Literature Analysis.

We describe a case of a 67-year-old man with bioprosthetic aortic valve endocarditis secondary to , a rare Gram-negative plant pathogen. The initial source was assumed to be due to soil exposure. The patient was successfully managed with ceftriaxone following aortic valve replacement.

Enoxaparin Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis Dosing in Critically Ill Underweight Patients.

Optimal dosing of VTE prophylaxis for specific patient populations remains an area of concern as insufficient evidence exists regarding dosing for underweight patients. The purpose of this study is to compare the incidence of major bleeding events in underweight patients given different prophylactic doses of enoxaparin. This is a retrospective analysis performed at multiple hospitals within a single health care system.

Urethra-sparing prostate cancer radiotherapy: Current practices and future insights from an international survey.

Purpose: In prostate cancer patients, high radiation doses to the urethra have been associated with an increased risk of severe genitourinary toxicity following dose-escalated radiotherapy. Urethra-sparing techniques have emerged as a promising approach to reduce urinary toxicity. This international survey aims to evaluate current global practices in urethra-sparing and explore future directions for the implementation of this technique in external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for prostate cancer.

The composition of eukaryotic membranes reflects a varied but precise amalgam of lipids. The genetic underpinning of how such diversity is achieved or maintained is surprisingly obscure, despite its clear metabolic and pathophysiological impact. The Arv1 protein is represented in all eukaryotes and was initially identified in the model eukaryote as a candidate transporter of lipids from the endoplasmic reticulum.

Cultivation of Grit in Nursing Students: A Qualitative Descriptive Study "Cultivation of Grit".

Background: Predicted nursing deficits and low nursing student retention rates highlighted the need to investigate cultivation of grit, a malleable trait involving perseverance and passion to achieve long-term goals amidst challenges and difficulties.

Objective: The objective of this study was to identify how cultivation of grit and additional academic and non-academic strategies aided gritty second-year associate degree-seeking nursing students in addressing nursing program challenges and completing their nursing program.

Methods: Twenty-two second-year associate degree-seeking nursing students in rural central Arizona completed demographic and Grit-O Scale questions using Survey Monkey™ and participated in semi-structured interviews or focus group discussions held from September through December 2022.

Intravesical vancomycin for the treatment of Corynebacterium cystitis and struvite bladder stones: A case report.

Urologic patients with anatomic abnormalities can be particularly susceptible to urinary tract infections (UTI). UTI with urease-producing bacteria can promote struvite urinary calculi and pose unique treatment problems. There is potential for rapid stone growth and bacterial eradication can be difficult secondary to urothelial or stone colonization.

Synergistic interaction between wheat streak mosaic virus and Triticum mosaic virus modulates wheat transcriptome to favor disease severity.

Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV; ) and Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV; ), the type members of the genera and , respectively, in the family , are economically important wheat viruses in the Great Plains region of the USA. Co-infection of wheat by WSMV and TriMV results in disease synergism. Wheat transcriptome from singly (WSMV or TriMV) and doubly (WSMV+TriMV) infected upper uninoculated leaves were analyzed by RNA-Seq at 9, 12, and 21 days postinoculation.

Elevated intraocular pressure associated with sauna use: A case report.

Purpose: To report a case of increased intraocular pressure following sauna use in a patient with severe-stage primary open-angle glaucoma.

Observations: A 64-year-old Hispanic male with severe-stage primary open-angle glaucoma experienced intraocular pressure spikes following sauna sessions, as detected in clinic and confirmed by a home tonometry device. The intraocular pressure spikes resolved after combined goniotomy and glaucoma drainage device implantation.

Psychosocial moderators of the association between pain intensity and physical function in people with systemic sclerosis.

Background: Pain is a prevalent symptom of systemic sclerosis. While previous studies have demonstrated a correlation between higher pain intensity and lower physical function in individuals with systemic sclerosis, the potentially moderating effect of psychosocial factors on the association has yet to be explored.

Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from a fatigue self-management trial for adults with systemic sclerosis.

Cardiac involvement in systemic sclerosis: A critical review of knowledge gaps and opportunities.

Cardiovascular complications are observed in up to one-third of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Early identification and management of SSc-associated primary cardiac disease is often challenging, given the complex disease pathophysiology, significant variability in clinical presentation, and scarce disease-modifying therapeutics. Here, we review the molecular mechanisms involved in SSc-associated cardiac disease pathogenesis, novel diagnostic tools and emerging therapies.

The Effect of Wing-Flashing Behavior on Prey Capture Performance of San Clemente Loggerhead Shrikes.

Loggerhead shrikes () are medium-sized predatory songbirds that feed on arthropods and vertebrates. Prior to attacking their prey, shrikes have been observed performing "wing-flashing" behavior, consisting of rapid fluttering of the wings that seems to emphasize the white patches on their dorsal surfaces. We sought to quantify this behavior by analyzing videos of San Clemente loggerhead shrikes attacking insect and vertebrate prey, to understand whether and how wing-flashing affects prey capture performance.

High-risk pulmonary embolism in a post-operative patient.

Despite a rapidly evolving role for advanced therapeutic interventions, the majority of patients with high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) are still undertreated. Due to complex diagnosis and management, along with a high associated mortality rate, high-risk PE offers an excellent opportunity for simulation training. We present a simulated case of high-risk PE in a post-operative patient that is designed to teach key principles of diagnosis and management.

From basic scientific research to the development of new drugs for pulmonary arterial hypertension: insights from activin-targeting agents.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe disorder of the pulmonary vasculature leading to right ventricular failure. This pulmonary vascular remodelling leads to increased pulmonary vascular resistance and high pulmonary arterial pressures. Despite the development of new therapies, many patients continue to experience significant morbidity and mortality.

How physical activity opportunities seized by adolescents differ between Europe and the Pacific Islands: the example of France and New Caledonia.

Background: France (FR) and New Caledonia (NC) are both French territories, one in Western Europe, the other as part of the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs). Despite schooling in similar educational systems, FR and NC adolescents develop distinct relationships with physical activity, which is influenced by the geographical-cultural and symbolic structures of their respective societies. This study explored the distribution of physical activity according to geographical culture and opportunity-temporal dimensions.

Can an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-Based Smartphone App Help Individuals with Mental Health Disorders Quit Smoking?

Background: Individuals with mental health disorders face major barriers in accessing smoking cessation care, often due to the stigmas associated with mental disorders and addiction. Consequently, accessible population-based smoking cessation interventions are needed for this vulnerable group.

Objective: This secondary analysis utilized data from a 12-month randomized trial to examine whether an acceptance and commitment therapy-based app (iCanQuit) demonstrated greater efficacy, engagement, and satisfaction compared to a United States (US) Clinical Practice Guidelines-based app (QuitGuide) in helping adults with mental health disorders quit smoking.

Predictors of postoperative complications following thyroidectomy: A systematic review.

Introduction: Thyroidectomy is considered a relatively safe procedure with a low risk of postoperative complications, making it challenging to identify predictors of complications to improve shared decision making. Recent advancements in clinical bioinformatics and surgical decision-making tools have the potential to improve patient outcomes. This systematic review aimed to assess the current understanding of factors predicting such complications following thyroidectomy.

Marital status shows no protective effect on perioperative outcomes after robotic-assisted pulmonary lobectomy.

Background: Marital status has been shown to have protective effects for married patients with various cancers. We sought to determine effects of marital status on perioperative outcomes after robotic-assisted pulmonary lobectomy (RAPL).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 709 consecutive patients who underwent RAPL between 2010 and 2022 by one surgeon.

Co-development of a community pharmacy training regarding fentanyl and xylazine test strips.

Introduction: Fentanyl and xylazine test strips (FTS, XTS) are simple point-of-care tests that determine the presence of fentanyl or xylazine in a substance before use. Access to FTS and XTS is limited. For pharmacists who are willing to sell an FTS, there is little guidance about how to implement FTS sales and counseling as no training for community pharmacists regarding FTS and XTS exists.

Comparison of Glenoid Bone Loss After Unidirectional Versus Combined Shoulder Instability in a Military Population.

Background: While glenoid bone loss (GBL) after anterior shoulder instability correlates with poor functional outcomes, the specific effects of GBL in posterior and combined-type shoulder instability remain poorly characterized, especially in a high-risk military population.

Purpose/hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to compare GBL between unidirectional anterior or posterior instability versus combined-type instability in active-duty servicemembers. It was hypothesized that total GBL and GBL in the direction of instability would be greater in those with combined-type instability compared with unidirectional instability.

Frequency of Tommy John Surgery in NCAA Division I College Pitchers Versus Weather Conditions.

Background: Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (UCLR) is a common elbow procedure in baseball pitchers. Previous studies of Major League Baseball pitchers identified the weather as a potential risk factor, as warmer climates enable more annual playing time and increase overuse injury risks.

Purpose: To determine whether weather conditions play a role in UCLR rates and timing for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (D1) collegiate pitchers in the United States.

Arthroscopic Bone Grafting of Deep Acetabular Cysts in Hip Preservation Surgery: A Matched Case-Control Study.

Background: Acetabular subchondral cysts are commonly identified signs of joint degeneration and arthritis. This pathology is generally considered a relative contraindication for hip preservation surgery.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of arthroscopic bone grafting for the treatment of acetabular subchondral cysts.

Effects of aging on diurnal transcriptome change in the mouse corpus callosum.

The corpus callosum, a major white matter region central to cognitive function, is vulnerable to aging. Using zeitgeber time (ZT) aligned with environmental light/dark cycles, we investigated temporal gene expression patterns in the corpus callosum of young (5-month-old) and aged (24-month-old) mice using RNA-seq. Comparative analysis revealed more differentially expressed genes across ZT pairs in young mice than aged mice.
