Background: Lymphedema is a common problem that adversely impacts quality of life in breast cancer survivors. Although lymphedema risk is modifiable through behavior change, there is no standardized approach to educate survivors about risk-lowering strategies. Furthermore, misconceptions about lymphedema risk factors and risk-lowering strategies are common.

Introduction: Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a crucial role in extending health services, particularly for people who are medically underserved. Despite efforts to expand CHW programs nationally and in Iowa, challenges persist in defining their roles and responsibilities. Few studies have considered the perspectives of both CHWs and CHW employers simultaneously.

Background: As habitat fragmentation increases, ecological processes, including patterns of vector-borne pathogen prevalence, will likely be disrupted, but ongoing investigations are necessary to examine this relationship. Here, we report the differences in the prevalence of Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, s.l.

Background: The use of dietary supplements (DS) has steadily increased over the last several decades, particularly among older adults, contributing to the growth of the multibillion-dollar DS industry. The cost of prescription medication is a known contributor to medication nonadherence, yet the cost burden of DS among older adults is not well understood.
Methods: Using medication data from the 5-year multicenter longitudinal cohort AAA LongROAD study of older adults who drive, DS were identified and categorized.

Organophosphate (OP) nerve agents, such as soman (GD), pose great risk to neurological health by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, leading to seizures, epilepsy, and behavioral deficits. While acute treatment may alleviate immediate symptoms, the long-term consequences, particularly those involving neuroinflammation and systemic toxicity, remain poorly understood. This study used adult male and female Sprague Dawley rats to investigate the chronic effects of a single acute exposure to soman (132 µg/kg, s.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease in cervids which is caused by prions, and new cases continue to appear in populations in North America and globally. The United States Department of Agriculture-approved tests for diagnosing CWD use obex and/or retropharyngeal lymph nodes, which are challenging to collect as the tissues require anatomical knowledge, skill, and time to dissect. Third eyelids contain lymphoid follicles and are easier to collect.

To address growing water scarcity, we must improve the energy efficiency of thermal desalination technologies such as air gap membrane distillation. However, promising functional materials such as slippery liquid infused porous surfaces have not yet implemented for any desalination technology. Here, we fabricate and test slippery liquid infused porous surfaces (using Krytox 16,256 lubricant and CuO nanostructures) in an air gap membrane distillation apparatus.

Forbs ("wildflowers") are important contributors to grassland biodiversity but are vulnerable to environmental changes. In a factorial experiment at 94 sites on 6 continents, we test the global generality of several broad predictions: (1) Forb cover and richness decline under nutrient enrichment, particularly nitrogen enrichment. (2) Forb cover and richness increase under herbivory by large mammals.

The association between insulin resistance (IR), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and cancer is increasingly recognized and poses an escalating global health challenge, as the incidence of these conditions continues to rise. Studies indicate that individuals with T2DM have a 10-20% increased risk of developing various solid tumors, including colorectal, breast, pancreatic, and liver cancers. The relative risk (RR) varies depending on cancer type, with pancreatic and liver cancers showing a particularly strong association (RR 2.

As cultural consumption increasingly moves to a digital space, it is crucial to understand the evolving landscape of art consumption both in and outside of a physical museum context. The current study delves into this contrast, seeking to understand how art is perceived and appreciated in museums and on a digital medium (like a computer screen). Across two experiments at the Barnes Foundation and Penn Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, we explored how the aesthetic engagement of paintings and artifacts is influenced by the physical context in which an artwork is encountered and by the characteristics of the viewer.

Mutations or deletions in the SHANK3 gene have been identified in up to 1% of autism spectrum disorder cases and are considered the primary cause of neuropsychiatric symptoms in Phelan McDermid syndrome (PMS). While synaptic dysfunctions have been extensively documented in the absence of Shank3, other mechanisms through which Shank3 may regulate neuronal functions remain unclear. In this study, we report that the ribosomal protein Rpl3 and overall protein synthesis are downregulated in the cortex and striatum of Shank3 knockout (KO) mice and in neurons differentiated from human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) derived from a PMS patient.

During human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) entry, the metastable pretriggered envelope glycoprotein (Env) trimer ((gp120/gp41)) opens asymmetrically. We present cryo-EM structures of cleaved asymmetric Env trimers in amphipol-lipid nanodiscs. The gp41 membrane-proximal external region (MPER) could be traced in Env protomers that remained close to the nanodisc despite Env tilting.

Purpose: Intact tactile perception is essential to successfully interact with objects. While tactile examinations exist for capturing tactile impairments, recent investigations underscore that these examinations remain insufficient, particularly for adults following a neurological injury. To inform the design of improved tactile assessments, this study comprehensively captures factors that can influence tactile perception in young and older adults who are neurologically intact.

Objective measurements of pain and safe methods to alleviate it could revolutionize medicine. This study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and virtual reality (VR) to improve pain assessment and explore non-pharmacological pain relief in cancer patients. Using resting-state fNIRS (rs-fNIRS) data and multinomial logistic regression (MLR), we identified brain-based pain biomarkers and classified pain severity in cancer patients.

Transcription Factor EB (TFEB) controls lysosomal biogenesis and autophagy in response to nutritional status and other stress factors. Although its regulation by nuclear translocation is known to involve a complex network of well-studied regulatory processes, the precise contribution of each of these mechanisms is unclear. Using microfluidics technology and real-time imaging coupled with mathematical modelling, we explored the dynamic regulation of TFEB under different conditions.

Objective: To determine the insensible water losses (IWL) in preterm infants cared for in incubators with 70% or 90% relative humidity (RH).
Study Design: This was a single center retrospective study of extremely preterm infants between 22- and 28-weeks gestational ages nursed in 70% and 90% RH. IWL was calculated using a formula that utilized infants' fluid intake, urine output and body weight changes.

Objective: We aim to describe sequential direct bilirubin levels in preterm infants and examine the outcomes of subsequent evaluation of direct hyperbilirubinemia.
Study Design: Retrospective electronic chart analysis of preterm infants admitted and surviving the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stay was performed.
Result: A total of 127 preterm infants had 665 bilirubin measurements (333 direct bilirubin; 332 total bilirubin) during their first NICU stay.
